Carolyn's BeeDay
My sweet friend's birthday today. Back in The Day, she was my nearest, we used to share some swell times. Don't know if she got my greetings, but maybe she feels it in her heart!
Happy Birthday, Carolina! Thanks for all the Grand Times!

Brennan's Breakfast
Got invited to an Event at the newly-remodeled Brennans on Royal Street.
The food didn't need remodelling, or the service or the great coffee!
Sublime!

Lips & The Trips @ The Fairgrinds Coffeehouse
Had a big blast-off at our usual Third Friday of the Month at the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse in Mid-City. Joined by the effervescent, ever-bubbly Karen & Steve Marsh, our newest Buddies!
Thanks for all that love!

BBQ & Blues Fest, Lafayette Square
Had to make it out to see Mason Ruffner, who has re-located back to New Orleans. Used to be one of my faves in Houston-Town and even ran into him when I visited Memphis when he had moved there c. 1999. He was playing on Beale Street at a small club and I really enjoyed it!
Back in The Day when he played at the Absinthe House on Bourbon Street, the likes of Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray would come in and sit in with him! Nice!
Still going strong! Glad I stayed for his "Oral History" interview with WWOZ dj David for archiving in the Jazz & Heritage Foundation vaults--(yes, they took over this little, local Festival, too).
Got to hear tidbits like getting called to a recording session by Daniel Lanois and it turned out to be Dylan (recording his "Oh Mercy" alblum) who had been listening to Mason's music! All M. could think about was, "Uh-oh, now he knows I have been ripping him off."
Wow! Carlos Santana asks him up to play on stage with him! HomeTown Homie Makes Great!
Aimee and I got her hubster Bill to take a pic with him. Such a nice guy--so talented, so gifted.
Got to hang with my Honey on a beautiful day. A bit crowded, but Abita Purple Haze in cans. Wow, who woulda thought? This teeny festival went mega, just like everything else. And I remember when pH was just on tap found only here in New Orleans...

Rock'N'Bowl & Mason Ruffner
It was a school night, but had to take in all the Fun! Boy, do I suck at bowling, but it great joy to get a STRIKE! M. has come a long way and it was great being out with him in Lane No. 4. Saw Johnny Blancher at his classic, famed, hallowed hall of Entertainment. Great snacks--fried shrimp and catfish--nice folks, check it out--It's a definite Lips Recommendation!
Speaking of Lips Recommendations, Mason Ruffner, back home in New Orleans, is a must-see! Every Tuesday night (except for the next three weeks when he goes to Sweden) at Marigny Brassiere on Frenchmen Street--and he has one of my fave drummers from Bourbon Street (certainly the nicest one!) Bob Burke!
Great catching up with him and listening to the psychedelic-folk-blues pickin' style of the Fab Ruffner!
Stopped by Amzie's pad to bring up there. Love that guy! Ran into Ashlye, tearin' up the town, and I drank a few too many Abita Jockamo beers on tap myself.
Lovely night out School Night Fun! See ya there Tuesday, November 17!
Wednesday, Rocktober 21, 2015
The Houstron Gals finally surfaced and helped me nurse my hangover with a Frambois on tap at The Bulldog in my 'Hood. Great to re-connect. Forgot that Jett sold me my lucky red fishnet dress, and it was fun hearing her recount all of my Rudyard's Pub antix!
Elaine so generously brought me a purple Lips phone that really works!

Happy Halloween Week-End from the town that takes its Spirits and Costuming quite sincerely!
Animated & Spooky Sounds at Neighbor's Yard on Coliseum St.
I dressed up for the office building costume contest as a bit of a Pippi Longstocking:
The Molly's Parade has gotten too large and frat-ratty-ish for us, so we have opted for the "real" Voodoo Fest that is put on by Voodoo Authentica on Dumaine Street. Sunpie Barnes will be performing and speaking again about the Ancestors tomorrow afternoon for their annual (17th!) block party in front of the shop. Also once gain, Amzie Adams has executed the official poster which is on sale and helps defray costs of the Fete.
Tomorrow evening at Casa Borrega we are looking forward to our friend Ralph Gipson playing with Fredy Omar, 7-11pm.
And then on Sunday, we will be taking in the Day of the Dead across Da Lake in Lacombe (introduced to by aforementioned Ralph Gipson and his wife Laura) for the Creoles' annual cleaning, decorating and visting of the cemeteries.
See you out on the streets celebrating and honoring those that have gone before us and those that are partying with us!
Sat., October 31, 2015
Threatened to rain all day, and finally started when we started out on bikes to the "real" Voodoo Fest on Dumaine at Voodoo Authentica. A bit of a cold wind, too, made me turn back and get out of my silk nightgown, giant hat and Masons' cape costume for something a bit more practical and warm: a skeleton mask, fedora and flower from the garden!
Michael was in full Pirate Regalia with his latest addition of skary-skeleton face paint as we sailed into the Quarter to see a performance by Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes, one of our fave-raves.
Saw Amzie Adams first and he recognized me, even behind all that! The chairs in front of the Shop were all turned over and people were huddling in the teensy main room of Voodoo Authentica, listening to one of the local Voodoo Queens. Met Sunpie who called M. a "scalliwag"--cool! He is one of My Idols. Recently retired Park Ranger, he has world-toured twice with the Paul Simon/Sting Tour. They love him and why wouldn't they??!!
He regaled us with French Patois songs to Ouvrez La Porte ("open the door," for the Good Spirits to come to this side of The Veil) accompanied by his squeezebox and thumping foot. Every once in a while he would take a sip from his flask (with a skull and cross bones on it) and pour some on the floor for Marie Laveau, Papa Legba, Baron Samedi and all the rest--like the Saints of the Catholic religion--all around to assist us in our endeavors.
As we headed out to see Ole Pal Ralph Gipson playing with Fredy Omar at Casa Borrega, it started raining [again!] so we were forced to take refuge at Cafe Amelie's bar where Joey was serving up some great beverages! I helped myself to an orange blossom Champagne Cocktail and Pirate Diablo had a specialty Satsuma Grog. Warmed up for a bit then lit out across the wet and wild landscape to the wild and wooly dancescape at Fredy's show.
Got home in time to watch Svengoolie's showing of Frankenstein, the 1931 Boris Karloff Klassique!

All Saint's Day
Made our Annual Pilgrammage to Lacome cemeteries, taking in Brunch at La Lou (replaced Another Broken Egg)
in old Mandeville, a bike ride down the Tammany Trace in the rain, and a rousing Saints game on the AM radio while cruising to Abita Springs Brew Pub for some Purple Haze (for me:
and the CHICKEN!):
and an Abita Root Beer Float (for M.): served up by the lovely Melissa:
No respectable visit to the Northshore leaves out the Abita Mystery Museum and we got the great opportunity of meeting Mr. John Preble himself!
The rain kept most of the families away so the candles were not as blazing as in the past, but we still felt the peace that communing with our Ancestors in these places poses for us.
Sipped on the 64-ounce jug of Purple Haze while M. drove across the Causeway Bridge, listening to WWOZ and groovy songs like the original "Monster Mash," several versions of "St. James Infirmary," as well as Louis Prima & Wife Gia's "Ole Black Magic."
Magical Day of Phun & Phrolic with My Honey and Our Ancestors!
November 4, 2015
Got a BeeLated BeeDay Celebration from my boss along with a co-worker at the new (to me) Johnny Sanchez spot on Poydras Street (John Besh & Aaron Sanchez' collaboration). Mighty fine pitchers of Margies along with an excellent Brussel Sprouts appeteaser. Ran into Michael Paz who was elated that my Birthday Celebration lasted for four months! He took a Swelfie of us to send to mutual pal, Jewels, in Australia, but I have not seen it yet! Thanks, Rocky!
November 5, 2015
Seattleite Glen Campbell buzzed in for a "Quickie" along with his brother, Neil, here for work. We took in the Kingsley House Benie in their courtyard, featuring Kermit Ruffins ("All Aboard!") and The ReBirth Brass Band, all while sucking down some freebie ReBirth Pale Ale. Nice! Superb weather for dancing in the grass barefootin'!
November 6, 2015
Visiting Seattleite pals Neil and Glen Campbell treated M. and I to a fantab dinner outside at Dante's Kitchen, then the opening night of "Simply Irma" at the Anthony Bean Community Theatre, down the street. Wow! She is anything but simple--an original production retelling her life, with her playing herself in the second half. Such a voice! No wonder Allen Toussaint calls her his fave and he can hear her voice in his head. Double-Wow!
Irma's long-time husband and manager graciously posed for a pic following the show, which ended in a second line romp. I got to relate to Mr. Bean about our Rev. Ruth exclaiming how he would come to the Church and declare his Theatre and here it is! Great job, All!
And thank you, Campbells, once again for such generosity and FUN!
November 7, 2015
The Campbell Bros. came over for Yumbo, served up by Fabuloso Certified Executive Chef Rev. Michael. Since they cannot hang like they used to, the Yumbo brought them back to life. Come back soon, Y'All! Miss you greatly! xox
November 10, 2015
My alarm woke me up, thankfully, as I was about to unsuccessfully tie the jaw of an alligator (with a nylon stocking) that was one of three chasing Michael & I as we were climbing up the refrigerator and shelves in a vain attempt to escape.
In "Real Life," M. called me to the TV set where Irma Thomas was being interviewed by Eric via the telephone, with her reaction and memories--Mr. Allen Toussaint had passed through those Pearly Gates while we slept and dreamed of 'gators...he was quoted as saying that he liked the wee hours of the morning for writing songs, and for anything...God Bless and we will miss you dearly, as you were a Dear Heart...
Friday, November 13
Lips & The Trips, Mahogany Jazz Hall Burlesque Bar & Absinthe House
We dedicated our show to Mr. Toussaint, the inspirational Musical Icon that graced our City for so many years. He still walks among us, in his songs, in our dreams and Our Memory. We love and miss you, but feel your presence still.
Had a great night of Musical Merriment. Matt El D'Orazio graciously filled in for Mr. Surrealious, off on Hiatus in Baton Rouge. Made lots of new friends and Melissa sang with us! What a blast! Love our New Club! Love Clubowner Tony Seville! Thanks a bunch!

Trip to D.C.
Saved some dough on this early morning flight, but Note to Self: do not have to leave for airport four hours after getting home from a gig...
Rode among Allen Toussaint's Angelic Kingdom alongside 64 Saints Fans headed for the Washington Redskins game--even changed planes with them all in Atlanta!
Arrived at National (now re-named Reagan--yuk) Airport and walked a fur- piece to the Subway--but what a way to go! D.C. is a real-live City compared to New Orleans--Wow! I moved from here in 1978 for warmer climes and I am glad I did, but what a blast of a Culture Impact!
Got an Attendant to assist me in purchasing an All-Day Subway Pass on my SmartTrip card ($14.95 + $2.00 for the card itself--ecological!) and took a ride on the Reading to The Mall and the Smithsonian Smorgasboord.
Exited at L'Enfant Plaza for a stop at the American Indian Museum. Had researched online and got a recommendation from Debinski that the cafe there served up some fine eatin's!
The weather was not as cold as expected and it was dazzling seeing everyone out and about at our Nation's Capital. The Dome of the Capital building was covered in scaffolding, like the Lilliputians tying down Gulliver.
The American Indian Museum was fab! Even the building itself--looked like an Indian face. And The Mitsitsa (meaning "Let's Eat" in Delaware Pitscacany) Cafe of indigineous food, the best! Had read the Menu online and was set for that Butternut Squash Chowder with smoked trout and pumpkin seeds! It did not disappoint!
I enjoyed the video of the Healers in Columbia. The hallways were separated into different Indians and this one was not North American.
The Sun and The Universe played an essential role in their lives, and the Unity of All was an important element of their existence...inspiring, of course.
Forged on, because I had a dinner date with the Hostess-with-the-Mostess, Debra "Debinski" Nelson and ole College Chum, Jeff Eaton and his lovely wife, Bonnie, at Ledo's Pizza, in College Park, My Ole Stompin' Grounds!
Found the Subway stop, The Federal, with some help from a passerbyer, then thought I had gotten on the wrong one when I caught the Green Line--was stuck on thinking I should take the Yellow Line, but turns out both go out my way, thanks to a friendly fellow Subway-rider.
Came above-ground in the Maryland 'Burbs and saw the Hyattsville stop before my College Park stop. Both looked like a small-town train depot...
Took a cab from the Subway stop as I couldn't figure out which way was downtown CP-Town (turns out I got out the back side which corn-fused me).
Ten dollars later I was at the Pizza mecca, LEDO'S--the one I had been dreaming of for the last 15 years (my last visit to the D.C.-area and the Bosom of me Bosom-Buddies!) The Adelphi location was no more, but they (supposedly) moved the ovens and accountrements to this spot two doors from The Rendez-Vous, another Mecca, where the pizza tasted fantabulous--the crust was not as crispy-crispy as I would have liked, but the topping stupendous. And of course, the conversation and memories, stimulating and heart-warming...God Bless Ole Pals!
Caught a glimpse of the former Book Sales location, now a Cluck U Chicken; and the spot where the Club LT (Little Tavern hamburgers) building was--they should have made it into a CP Museum!!!
Speaking of Ole Pals, took a ride to ArtoMatic to see SallyAnn Rogers' Art Exhibit -- it was a Gala Reception, featuring Art and Alco-Bevs! Alright! SallyAnn is an accomplished artist and I was pleased to be able to attend this Reception with tons of folks and artwork.
Had to catch some nightlife so subway-ed it to downtown D.C.'s Chinatown to dance to the Brazilian Bluegrass rhythms at Hickory Hill's basement. Big dance floor and good craft beer! Big fun with Debinski and The Eatons! Thanks, Buds!!!
Sun., November 15
L.R. Fox' Memorial Service
Audobon Society's nature preserve was the perfect spot to celebrate Larry's "Life Well-Lived."
The speakers captured his essence and shared some great tales and memories, which we also shared with each other over a catered affair. Lovely, lovely.
Jeff and Bonnie Eaton picked Debinski and I up and we passed by The Mormon Cathedral on the way. The weather cooperated and it was not too chilly to be out enjoying nature, like Larry loved to do.
Upon arrival, and a choice parking spot, Deb's college roommate and a former fellow Book Saleser, Cathy (Ayers) Arrington strolled up and we hugged like we hadn't seen each other in 30 years! She is sweeter than ever and immediately we were admonishing Larry for not being present: "I want my funeral before I die," says Cathy, and we agreed!
Both Camy, his wife, and his daughter, Kate, spoke, as well as Kate's husband, Corey. Michael, his son, did not speak, but was Larry personified--it was great to see him. His brother Richard and SallyAnn Rogers spoke--all good stuff!
Fun to hear about the times before the Book Sales era: his Fraternity days (a la Jeff) and The Taylor Road Commune gang.
A friend of Larry's was also one of Deb's former professors and it was fun to talk about Larry and keep his memory alive.
I was pleased to receive an invite to the Taylor Road after-party at famous architect Mark McInturff's groovy pad. His ex- was Cathy Ayers, and his ex- before that, Nicola, kindly chaufeured Debinsk & myself.
I was inducted into singing Wagon Wheel with Mark and Tom Wilson, and I in turn formed the Lipettes back-up group, and we all chimed in for a rousing chorus. Crazy Man said he could play spoons on St. James Infirmary and that worked out because I had been singing that to myself for the past few weeks. For Larry!
Not having had recent contact with him, I didn't feel his disappearance as closely as those closer to him. I felt like he is an Ancestor now, like he had been for me--guiding me on as he lived-he who had christened me D.LipShus, who had molded my personnae, who made it possible for me to give expression to me; I will always hold him dear in my heart and know that as he had a Life Well-Lived, he was a shining example to us all. God Bless you, Lar, and those that you have left behind!!!
Without you not only would I not be Lips, I would not have met all your fantastic Tribe, including one Laura Gipson, whom I visited years later in one New Orleans and realized that was my Home...THANKS KIDDO!!!!
Mon., November 16
Trip Down Memory Lane
Deb and I hit all our former hot spots on and off Route 1, our former abodes on campus and on to Takoma Park for lunch with my ex-next door neighbors, Marty & Bob Anderson and SallyAnn.
We even visited the basement of Book Sales! And peeked in the window of the former Italian Gardens: "It looks beat up!" we exclaimed. "Well, it has been 40 years," we realized...
Lunch at Roscoe's was nice--the 70-degree weather allowed for outdoor dining--I still like Ledo's better, but great to hang out with my buds there at the place named after the storied Takoma Park rooster. Stopped by his statue en route to a tour of the hippie town...
The house that Larry and Camy "passed on to me," their former abode, 6701 Westmoreland Avenue, looked smaller and all the trees were gone, but the folks that bought it in 1979 (I moved in 1978) were still there, and were still outside working on it! I kept hoping for an invite inside, but we still got a lot of bang for a buck as Bob recollected throwing out his typewriter into the yard while writing his dissertation...
Loved taking this trip down Memory Lane. Love my ole pals and our ole stompin' grounds.
That evening, Debinsk hosted a pahty for the Gang and Laurel Brick joined us via FaceTime! Fun and Frolic with Deb's kids and grand-kids, her Bro' Lee and wife who had come to New Orleans moons ago. And her son brought Ledo's Pizza!!! Of course, Deb's cooking was the best--a pear apple cake to beat the band and other accoutrements. Camy and SallyAnn got escorted by Nicola and The Eatons attended as well. Such a grand good-bye to my D.C. friends.
November 17, 2015
Return Home to New Orleans
Debinski escorted me to National Airport via her car and then the Subway. Was cool how we come up to see the Washington Monument across the Potomac River! Great trip, but great to be back home to my Sweetie and my kitty-cat! Thanks, Deb, for the Hostess-with-the-Mostessing!!!! xox
Thurs., November 19
Allen Toussaint's Tribute, Orpheum
An unfathomable event--first, he had always been in perfect health--and then the amount of people, the cavalcade of stars paying tribute, the music, the speakers, I am almost rendered speechless. I believe there are some YouTube items and I suggest you look them up. It was quite a thing: part funeral, part musical extravaganza, part star-studded papparazi affair, and all heart due to the soul and swing of Mr. Allen Toussaint.
The newly-redone Orpheum Theatre was the perfect spot for this Prince of New Orleans, our very own giant among men.
He wrote every song every known and produced every other song he did not write. He walked among us as a gentleman and his Trubute was just as gracious.
All the speakers and singers showed their love and sadness: Irma Thomas (accompanied by Davell Crawford)--Deacon John--
The Deac told AT: "my gift is my song; this one's for you"
John Boutte (told me later, "that was the hardest thing I ever did"), Dr. John, Davell Crawford (both on piano), Boz Scaggs, rambling with his memories and then his duet with Jon Cleary, Elvis Costello's eloquent tribute--
Elvis Costello
Jimmy Buffett (sang "Fortune Teller" with his acoustic guitar), and last, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band with the Treme Brass Band--
ReBirth Brass & Preservation Hall Jazz Bands
When I saw Lolis Eric Ellie afterwards I asked him if he thought A.T. would be pleased. He said, "Even if he wasn't, he was so gracious he would say he did." So true, so true.
You will be missed, My Friend. Much love to you to all who knew him, thank you for your kindness and graciousness to us all.
I am happy I got to talk to him when I did. We (me & Gary Edwards) gave him our CD (SONO#1058) and he said he was going to "pop it right in" as he was leaving a party he played on Esplanade Avenue. I was quite honored that he actually acknowledged and recognized me the last time I saw him in person...whenever he arrived a buzz would go off in the room or event. He was never haughty or self-centered as someone of his achievements could have been. Reminded me of an angel floating around bestowing blessings on all who came in contact with him--and that meant merely breathing his air!
I had plenty of "encounters" with him and breathed his air--as in arriving at the same intersection in the French Quarter on more than one occasion and exchanging hellos. Walking from a Panel Discussion at which he had spoken and relating to him how after I saw the documentary about him and in it he said he heard rhythm in every day noises, that I told him he reminded me of Dizzy Ratstein in the underground comix! Fortunately I was saved by a flock of fans who gathered around him and we gradually parted...year before last at The Deac's Birthday Party at The Rock'N'Bowl I was hanging with Kathy Sebastian when he made a surprise appearance and I got in some pix...once at The Cutting Edge Music Festival he arrived and was taking a home movie which included me and Jennifer Edwards! We were all giggly. My voice coach from Houston Debbie Beinhorn didn't know who he was and they started talking. Margie Perez was performing and I asked her if she was nervous that he walked in and she said no, I have sang in his band! Wow!
God Bless him and as he used to say, LOOKING FORWARD!!!
On Canal Street, the Mardi Gras Indians were having their own Home-Going Service and I stopped for a bit [see pix below and to the right]--
Friday, November 20
Lips & The Trips, Fairgrinds Coffeehouse
Matt El D'Orazio sat in for vacationing Mark Fowler once again and we enjoyed the night along with some ole fans from 1993 at Checkpoint's and the Marsh's one-year old grandbaby, who was attending his first musical concert: Welcome, Donovan, may you have many enjoyable musical ventures! xox
Sat., November 21
Al "Carnival Time" Johnson at Buffa's
The Red Beans and Rice Parade Krewe
hosted their event and had their Grand Marshall, Al, play. If you have never sat through Al blazing out the New Orleans R'n'B splendors you have not lived! So cool, so righteous! Love you, Al.
Also enjoyed a set by the Treme Brass Band and Purple Haze in a bottle! xox
Sun., November 22
St. Catherine's Hat Parade
Neighbor Claudia's Brainchild had more and beautiful hats this year!
She always has the best! Wouldn't fit in the photo!
Zazou played again and then Raphael & I did a version of St. James Infirmary after I had a bit too much bubbly
Thurs., November 26
Thanksgiving Day at the Races
Always a big hat fun day, the weather was superb as we greeted the beautiful horses and friends at the New Orleans Fairgrounds Racetrack. Really enjoyed watching M's winner cross the finish line way ahead of the others, and I got a kick out of meeting Robert Burke's wife & two young kids. Supercute!
Went home to M.'s excellent roasted butternut squash soup and my (I might add) excellent apple pie! Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! So much for which to be grateful!!!!! xox
Saturday, December 5
Ruth Bailey's Whirlwind Visit
Ruth flew to Baton Rouge and drove in to make it to Louisiana Landmarks Society's Marche des Fete at the historic and lovely Pitot House and grounds on Bayou St. John. We immediately scored some of Tomio's scrumptious -cello products--Ruthie scarfing up grapefruit-cello, blood orange-cello, satsuma-cello and of course, limon-cello, homemade at Mary & Tomio's 1939 home in Old Arabi. Mary was there caning chairs as usual and the array of other goodies on hand was enticing.
Saw my gal from mermaidspurse and bought some of her ointment--she was out of clove soap--darn.
Saw the lady from the Louisiana Music Factory and Mr. Blanchard, the storyteller. R. bought a book from him for her eight-year old nephew.
We liked the "tie lady"--she fashions outfits from ties, Ms. Odelle--check her out on the web, "Fit to be Tied"--great stuff!
The weather was perfect and we kept finding money on the ground--and not just singles! Wow! What a great day! Garage sale, lunch at Liuzza's By the Track, friendly people everywhere, flowers blooming, frosty schooners of beer--it was straight out of a fairy tale!!!
Speaking of Louisiana Music Factory, Cyril Neville and his Uptown All-Stars (and they are!) performed to promote his new book and CD recounting tales and songs from Benny's Bar (I played there once before it closed--shortly after I moved here in 1996--I remember my drummer from Houston drove in, spent the night and then left early because he forgot he was allergic to my cat--sorry Pflash!)
Across the street and down the block Sunpie & The Louisiana Sunspots (they are hot!) were trading sets at Maison for dancing and drinking, like a roadhouse! Great fun and they had Lagunitas brew on tap! Nice!
Missed Gil's art show, but made it to the Krewe du Vieux' fundraiser at their den on Architect Street. Spied a wedding taking place at the old church around the corner. Nice!
The Fundraiser was quite hair-raising and Ruthie and I had been drinking all day so we didn't stay too long for the madness. Brent Anderson was serving up some mighty fine Earl King numbers and we got to say hello to Jann Darsie, womaning the Krewe of Underwear booth, our hostess, and drink some homemade beer. (Ouch, that hurt the next day.)
Made it home for Svengoolie's "House of Frankenstein" and Michael's fab Yumbalaya--served up with Love!
Thanks, Ruthie, come again soon! Love you lots!!! Always an Adventure!
Fri., December 11
Lips & The Trips, Mahogany Jazz Hall
Had a big time at our new nightspot in The French Quarter. Got to do our Christmas sing-alongs. A bunch of guys in a wedding party were drinking a lot of bad beer, but I didn't mind, I had an Abita Amber or two! Thank you, Tony, Sasha & John for a good night of Christmas Cheer!
Sat., December 12
Lips & The Trips, PRC's Garden District Holiday Home Tour
Matt, Lips & Mark
Love playing this every year (our sixth!) and I requested a spot at our next-door neighbor's, Dr. Troy, so it was an easy commute!
Met a lot of new friends and the weather was superb. Here, with ole friend, Cynthia:
Matt filled in for Dale and we had a ball!!! (P.S. Sorry about the salt for sugar thing in your coffee, Matt, I am going to have to mark my jars!)
Kermit's Mother-In-Law Lounge was the venue for the WWOZ Volunteer Party which I got invited to by Maryse, the Head of All Volunteers, and the Wonderment Lady of 'Em All.
Kermit's Christmas Tree sports empties
Really nice bash with Kermit playing, celebrity sightings, free booze & food! Wow! Not to mention our gracious and charming Hostess, Maryse, and the Spirit of Ernie and Antoinette K-Doe permeating the space with the kept-up frescoes and tiles. Thanks, All!!!!
Sun., December 13
Our Lady of Good Counsel Church
The Archdiocese graciously decided to move the Charismatics from the old (and apparently crumbling) Monastery/ Nunnery on Rampart Street to replace the Parish Church (now called "Friends of Our Lady of Good Counsel"), but at least they saved the building.
Restored with a boat-load of money, apparently, of which they will use the proceeds from the sale of the Rampart property--an historic and beautiful spot by the way--cannot believe they are selling it...but then what wise and loving overseer would shut out the Parishioners of their own Church and arrest those protesting (Yay, Harold!!!) I told the Priest that I think Harold would be happy--(he agreed, with no speck of remorse or unforgiveness for all that occurred there). I was surprised I did not see Warren Hart there; the Church was full and they ran out of programs. Phyllis Treigle again brought the rafters down with her lovely voice and brought tears to my eyes and a large catch in my throat. Lovely, lovely.
They served bubbly and sweets after and allowed a tour of the also-newly-restored Rectory. Saw my neighbor, Erin, and Betty & Jim. Got to walk former next-door neighbor, Miss Anne, back to her car, and we caught up for a minute. Happy the Church is back, even if it is quite different...
Wed., December 16
Claudia & Jim's Neighborhood Christmas Get-Together
Met some new neighbors at our neighbors' Jim & Claudia's. Weather was nice enough to hang in the screened-in back porch. Love her home-made (by her parents) and (added by her the) disco ball Manger Scene! (see pic to the right)
Thurs., December 17
Mr. B's Bistro
Rocky took us out to lunch for Christmas and we ate, drank and were merry!
That is, until Our Fearless Leader got the bill:
Then it was:
Ha, ha, ha--I mean, ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas, Rockster, Megster, Laurie & Kevin! Love you guys!!!
Fri., December 18
The Fairgrinds Coffeehouse
Got a flat tire on the way to the gig--actually, while looking for a parking place--Doh! AAA came during our show, and they gave me a ticket anyways, but what fun with the new Tripettes, Steve Marsh & Michael Robillard--a couple of cool cats if I have ever seen one!
And thank you, Dale, for coming to the rescue with a hand cart and a happy heart! Mark played like a man possessed and we all went home smiling!
Thanks be to our newest, smallest fan, Donovan (& folks) for dancing with us! Love you, Karen & Steve!
Sat., December 19
Lips & The Trips, Mahogany Jazz Hall
Played our last gig of the year here at Tony Seville's groovy night club--talked some guys from up North into having a try at Absinthe. They were headed for a cruise so they were up for an Adventure. Former fan from the Tricou-(coo) House stopped in, Stuart--great seeing him after all these years! A responsible Dad and a loving husband now! Thanks for stopping in! Megan from the Musician's Clinic happened by and stayed. She tried some Absinthe, too! Woo hoo! Thanks for all you do, Cutie!
And thanks to The Ever-Talented Trips for making my life so easy--love you guys a big bunches!
Sun., December 20
The French Quarter
Michael & I made our annual pilgrimmage to Santa's Quarters and got an ornament personalized with "Our 13th Christmas" written on it by one of the talented shopkeepers before heading to Cane and Table for some old-time atmosphere and craft cock- and mock-tails. I had attended a PRC event there and shared the owners' enthusiasm for keeping it 1830s-style. Unfortunately, the "kids" that work there like the crappy canned music they play, completely ruining the feel...the hummus was okay and the cocktail I chose was okay; they decided to seat someone right next to us when there was ample places elsewhere which was annoying. The waitress thought we were leaving because the food was taking so long when I got up to go to the bathroom...just too many places to chose from to not have a perfect dining experience...
Went to Jackson Square for Caroling sponsored by the Patio Planters. I was 15 minutes late and all of the candles were gone, but I did manage to walk right in by the side entrance and stand by a lamp to see the words in order to join in the merriment. Left during the last song, Feliz Navidad, and made it home to see the end of Columbo!

Christmas Eve
Got off of work and the weather was superb! Upper 70s!!
For some reason I decided to "make groceries" which I am glad I did because I got a gift from Abita Brewery: Grapefruit Beer is back! Found a couple of sixes at the Wal-Mart! Yes!
M. & I took a bike ride down to The Roosevelt Hotel which was mobbed with visitors like us, getting into the Christmas Spirit with all those beautifully decorated trees and lights. Grabbed a couple of 1/2-price glasses of Proseco (since the line was so long) at Domenica...
Fell asleep with visions of SugarPlums dancing in my head...

Christmas Day
The temp hit 80-degrees today! Righteous! Took a bike ride out to Audubon Park with a stop at Rev. Elmer's apartment to drop off some of my homemade butter cookies she used to like. We were glad to see that Wynkie had taken her out to lunch.
Headed up to The Fly and checked out the River. Cooler breeze coming off the water, which was high, according to M.
M. made us his perfectly splendid gumbo which I term YUMBO and we nestled in our Pad, so grateful to be alive and well, still in love with each other, and having the Baby Jesus be born in our hearts anew!
Merry Christmas, One & All!!!!
Sat., December 26
City Park
Took in the Celebration in the Oaks at City Park. Still remember the Drive-thru Daze when we'd pack the LipsMobile with Merrimenters for one low-price and I would drive over those orange cones accidentally of course, in amazement at the beeyootefull lights.
Now you pay $8.00/person to walk around instead which means you can no longer come in your pajamas. Also you can take advantage of the snack/beverage options as well as riding the rides. We took a hike in the Wacky Shack! It was Wacky!
It was also super-crowded and car grid-locked. Drivers did not have the Christmas Spirit and I had to get out of the car to argue with a car behind us who would not back up so the nice Japanese Family could exit the parking space for which we were waiting. I had a ball, though, and got to smuggle in an Abita Grapefruit Beer. Nice!!!!
Sun., December 27
Another perfectly mellow day had us bike-riding down to the River to catch Trips Guitarist Mark Fowler sitting in with Andre Bouvier and the Royal Bohemians at the Crazy Lobster. Andre has been holding court there for 12 years and Mark sounded really good, adding some twang and gusto to A.'s already-great-sounding sound. Love his voice and playing, check him out, this is a Lips Recommendation.
Thurs., December 31, 2015
Went to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Parade on Decatur Street where there were many Blaine Kern floats advertising New Orleans products and a bunch of marching bands from the area and the two facing off in the big game on the weekend. We were there to see the Soul Rebels whom M. knows from Le Bon Temps, but we left early. There was a screaming little girl standing next to us and it was about all we could take. Things were getting nutty and we high-tailed it for home where some goofball one street over decided to shoot off some high-grade fireworks so we didn't have to travel to The River. Yikes, had my garden hose available!
I attended more funeral services this year than I have in my lifetime. My own SuperHoney was almost among them. Thank you, M., for not joining your Grandmother as she called you!
Thank you, O Lord, for all the gifts you continually bestow upon us and for those joyous ones coming forth in the coming year, 2016!
Thank you my band, The Trips, for all your love and talent! Looking forward to the Happy Surprises coming up!
"May the Lord Bless and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His Countenance and give you Peace."
Now and Always.
AMEN

Northshore Phun & Phrolic:
M. had the Sweet Potato Pancakes and I had the Brioche French Toast. It was good, but we just aren't used to eating so much sweets in the a.m. or ever. But the good coffee washed it down. Glad they are keeping breakfast alive here at this site. Stopped in next door to say hello to Marvilla Guesthouse manager, Michael O'Brien, but only saw his cat.
