Rex Den Tour
February 1, 2014
Took a bunch of photos at the place-of-mystery-no-more. Found out the theme of the 2014 Rex Parade is Gods of All Ages, although I am not supposed to release this to the media. Since I have a rare and distinguished readership, I don't consider this blabbing. Just bragging! Scored a bulletin to boot and bought a Rex Pin from 2003. Fun, fun!

Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers
Chickie Wah Wah
November 16, 2013
Dale's Chickie Wah Wah club on Canal Street has all the components of a perfect place to hear live music: smoke-free, free parking, Purple Haze in a bottle, cozy AND intimate, books good acts & attracts nice folk, friendly bartenders, clean restrooms...wow! Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers played on a Saturday night and I got to witness all, up close and personal.
Ran into Barry, owner/operator of every musician's friend, Louisiana Music Factory, and his bunch, brother Bruce, and Cousin Cash & Trish (who were visiting from Jackson, MS to go to the Saints game) (see pic to the right).
Okay, so I'll admit to some obsessiveness when it comes to Guitar Gods--especially Him.
And it's not just because he's a Guitar God, because he is; and it's not just because some of my first live-music partying experience was with him and the Nighthawks back in college, at the University of Maryland, College Park, because that's true, too; and it's not just the bond that is created between the band and the audience; and not because they had to tear down the Bayou in Bethesda after he played there; and it's not just because he's got a perfect blues voice, too; and it's not because he's been on the road, basically for 40 years, honing his craft; and it's not just because he plays great songs (surf tunes, too!) and makes them greater; and not because he ends the night with a terrific rendition of the Star Spangled Banner; and not because he did "Bullfrog Blues" which I was singing while driving to the club; and not because he's not jaded and just a perfectly nice person after all, who remembers me every time I see him; and it's not because he let me carry his guitars; and not just because of his great sense of humor, and a this-is-just-what-I-do matter-of-factness in relation to his gigantic talent---
No, No, No, it's because He is Jimmy Thackery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been combing the weekend listings for quite some time now looking for his appearance, and why I didn't think to stalk him on everyone's spy, the Internet, I don't know! Still in the newspaper age, I reckon...Saw him last at House of Blues back in -- 1999??? I don't know how he can remember so many people--he has so many notes, stops and words to remember... I read an article interview where he said he feels the thread from his heart to his fingers and gets in the zone while playing (or something like that--I'm going to have to re-read this), but that's what it was like watching/hearing him--there's all right, the great finesse and knowledge of the instrument and songs, but there's something more: the way he can bare his soul in public and entertain us at the same time. The Modest Genuis.
And for that we thank you kindly, heartily and hardily (not not hardly).
And that is why in the Pantheon of my Living Idols, you rank amongst The Supremeness.
God Bless Jimmy Thackery and his Colleagues-in-Crime (and assorted felonies), The Drivers (also very talented and super-nice folks as well)!!!!

Wished that I could bend time and make our visit last longer.
When we were there 10 years ago, an older building (without much personality) held this collection, which is apparently the largest outside of Europe.
Of course, Dali's personality is enough, but this new structure reflected his delving into the helix and the spiral, this geodesic dome.
I remember at the old building, which we were told was located about a half-mile away, there were more items explaining Dali's personal life with photographs, and in particular: "Gala, his wife, kept him from hysterical fits of laughter" which allowed him to work and live...
Always good to meet someone like that!!!
When we came out to the parking lot, M surprised me with this Christmas ornament:

It is the only open winding staircase remaining in an American colonial building. The hand-forged railing is the only original ironwork left from French Colonial Louisiana."
The front of the Convent, just inside the walls:
The plaque out front reads: "Former Ursuline Convent erected 1745, during the reign of Louis XV, King of France replacing an earlier Convent built 1727-1734 near the same site, closer to the River. Occupied until 1824 by the Ursuline Nuns as Convent, Orphanage and School for girls..."

Camy's Award
October 24, 2012
Almost two months after her daughter's wedding (see below), Camy received the Spirit Award for her work at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. (see pic to the right). Our mutual friend SallyAnn hipped me to this as Camy Sue also is modest & unassuming! Here's part of the speech that intro-ed her:
"I'm honored to be here today to tell you a little bit about why Camy Clough deserves the Secretary's Collaborative Spirit Award...many people, including our local Girl Scouts council, contributed to nominating Camy for this much-deserved award and I'd like to tell you why.
This summer, Washington, DC, turned Girl Scout green as gazillions of Girl Scouts came to the National Mall to celebrate their centennial. When they got here, they found that the Smithsonian had truly rolled out the welcome mat to greet them...they were welcomed at many museums with special programming just for them...This was all thanks to Camy Clough, who brought together a group...to plan something that nobody had time for but everybody knew was important...the merchandise, programs, exhibits, websites, and other offerings produced by Camy's team over many, many months had appeared by magic...(see speech cont'd to the right)
Kate & Cory's Wedding
August 24, 2012
Arrived in Portland, Maine and drove to lovely & scenic Boothbay Harbor where we stayed at The Rocktide Inn (see pix to the right and below).
View of Rocktide Inn from footbridge going to Boothbay
My ex-next door neighbors, Marty and Bob Anderson, were right in front of us at the desk! Had seen them only once since I moved from Takoma Park, MD in 1978! Lovely spot to catch up with them on the deck of the Rocktide (see pix to the right and below).
My sister Sheryl drove up from Boston to visit with us for the weekend and we ran into her, where else? but the bar! and she joined us on deck (see pic to the right and below).
She bought us lobster dinner (!!!) and then we drove with the Andersons to the Montsweag Roadhouse on Route 1 in Woolwich, the initial event of the Wedding Weekend, where the Happy Couple hung out during the infancy of their Relationship (see pix to the right and below) Hadn't seen Kate's folks, Larry Fox & Camy Sue Clough in about a dozen years:

August 25, 2012
We were chauffeured from The Rocktide Inn (where a number of the attendees were staying) by school bus and driven out to Cory's folks' in the country.
The Ceremony took place by the water and we all walked down the hill to be serenaded by a sweet singer, as well as the rustlings of the big spruce and oaks in the breeze.
After being proclaimed Man & Wife, they rode off in a speedboat!
The Wedding Reception featured a great punk-bluegrass band, Tricky Bitches with lots of dancing, great food--SAVE YOUR FORK, THERE'S PIE! Yumyoulipshus blueberry pie which they saved the top of for their 1st anniversary. (hahaha)
[I am slowly compiling some wedding pix for here so stay tuned]

We all met again at Cory's folks for breakfast which was magnificent out there under the tent from the night before:

(speech cont'd from left) ...And I have to admit that I think there was some magic involved. Especially when you think about this: Camy organized a working group of over 50 people who ended up engaging two hundred and fifty thousand Girl Scouts during the centennial celebration.
