December 31, 2012...
Happy New Year, Everyone! See ya next year (unless you see me first)!
The Mayans were right--topsy-turvy day as Monday is Friday!
December 25, 2012...
May your days be merry & bright!!! And may all your Christmases Bless Us Everyone!!!
December 24, 2012...
Christmas Eve! Happy Birthday, Debinski!
Enjoyed a cocktail on the porch of The Columns with neighbor Kendall & her Mom (visiting from Connecticut). Relaxing to watch and listen for the streetcar! Thanks for treating me!
Yesterday afternoon, met up with Pete Little & gal Dayna (visiting from Houston) and Jimmy (visiting from Mid-City--hahaha!) at Superior Grill to watch the Saints Victory! YAY!! Too bad the Minnesota Vikings didn't lose to help us out! Can't feel too bad--my mother's cousin's team...
Pete helped me out during Evacu-Vacation time & we got to catch up with them. They came on the Megabus (for real--look it up!) for a wedding & looked in pretty good shape considering the previous night's events...hadn't seen Jimmy in a while--he was in good spirits--seems to always be smiling. Great seeing you folks!!!

The Gift of the Spirit
Attended our Annual Christmas Candlelighting Service this morning. We don't normally incorporate symbols into our services, but this is a lovely exception.
Yesterday afternoon, made our Annual Pilgrammage to Santa's Quarters on Decatur Street . OK, so it's not the top of Pikes Peak, but it is a hoot, nonetheless. This year we had to snag an "Our 10th Christmas" ornament (they write it on there for you).
Rode up (up, meaning up on the Levee) to the River and enjoyed some sunshine (see pix to the right and below).
Andrew, Christmas Caroller--at Slewfoot's old spot (he knew him)

"Big Bertha"

December 22, 2012...
Celebrated the new Mayan Eon with some Latin music from Ralph Gipson's fab band, Santiago at Mojito's on Esplanade Avenue last night. Stone's throw from Checkpoint's. Nice spot and a great band! (see pic to the right). Check them out. Ran into Ralph's younger son, Lucas, who I've known since he was a seedling-handsome guy! Drinks beer now. (Good to see I had a good influence on him.)
Before Ralph joined Fredy Omar & was Con Su Banda, I used to see him fronting his own bands, Santiago and Zebulon "back in the 80s & early 90s." Great musician and a swell guy. Because of him and his wife, Laura (another former Books-Saleser), I became acquainted with New Orleans, slept on their couch for years, & then moved here in 1996. I will always be deeply grateful!
Motored to Central City to catch The Iguanas playing (for free!) at the 3rd Annual Latino Jazz Festival at Casa Borrega on Oretha Castle Haley.
Hugo Montero and Linda Stone are turning this former Mexican restaurant into a super Casa spot. (see pix to the right). Dance floor was packed, that is to say, the front room and that's them kicking up their heels. Notice Notre Dame on stage--(I could use her help on some or most of my gigs!) The fellas did an all-Latino set and it was excellent: Joe Cabral on vocals & sax, Renee on bass, Ron Hodges on guitar & vocals, trap set & percussionist's names unknown...(sorry). On harp was a fellow who plays with Canned Heat. Nice.
Ran into my neighbor George who took this pic of me & Sunpie (moved to My Idols Section).
December 21, 2012...
When I drove home last night after an hour of serenade by the St. Peter Claver Gospel Choir at the lovely & historic St. Louis Cathedral, the windy weather reminded me of Halloween--had that other-worldy feel about it--like we were reaching through The Curtain. Only this time in a larger way. When I left Poydras Center, an unbelievable amount of crows were circling Lafayette Square -- their wings and crowing covered the sky above the Square. I'd been noticing about two dozen at a few trees after work, but this was something much larger. They circled around and landed on The Federal Reserve building across St. Charles Avenue. "Funny...they've never done that before."
Wanted to get up with the Sun and greet the coming New Day, but overslept instead: am not used to my new phono's harp alarm (as in stringed instrument, not the beer)and incorporated it into my dream of a bright & beautiful, posh 1930s home! Ahh, the Luxury...
Thank the New Day for Youtube so we can view Michael Stipes singing what we'd have to go home and listen to on our phonographs instead of the various versions online. Beauty New Age, eh?
Also spied some photos of Mayan ceremonies at sacred ceremonial spots I have visited over the years: Chichen Itza and Tikal! Hurray for Circular Calendars.
December 20, 2012...
Went to the bank and made a depsit for my boss this afternoon--told him I thought it was a good idea in case this End-of-the-World thing doesn't work out...
Read that two places on Earth were being touted as safe havens for the pending Apocalypse, one because alien space ships were coming from underground to save the Faithful. I always thought that grassy mound on the neutral ground across from the Main Library downtown was the alien point of Disembarkation! I'd always see interesting characters (even by New Orleans standards!) nearby there--figured they were coming or going. Of course, there could be more than one Depot.
December 18, 2012...
So, if we (as in The Blessed Boys, The Saints) win our last two games and the Bears and a bunch of teams with animal names lose, and one in particular has to lose to a particular team, then WE ARE STILL IN IT!!!
And since the Super Bowl will be held at the (now called the Mercedes Benz) Superdome, on hallowed ground, former graveyard, it is only fitting that we should participate, n'est-ce pas? N'est-ce pas!
December 17, 2012...
Went Christmas caroling in Jackson Square last night, sponsored by the Patio Planters. The rain let up and after that giant Saints win (41-ZIP), we were all belting out the glad tidings! Not as crowded as in past years--made it sweeter and more Of-the-Season-Peaceful. Thanks, Jack, for your great singing voice!
Afterwards, checked out Helen Krieger's indie film, Flood Street, showing at Buffa's for Pat Jolly's NOLASynchronicity series--barkeep Lauren was in the film (I like that he always remembers I drink Purple Haze) and wrote three songs in it. Next Sunday they are showing Christmas movies all afternoon & evening.
December 15, 2012...
Got treated to a bounteous Holiday luncheon for our office Christmas party yesterday at Mr. B's Bistro--from a gin martooti to a glass of bubbly--fun, fun, fun--dig what Rocky had (see pic to the right). Barbecued shrimp--that sauce is orgasmic--check out their website--the secret recipe is no more! Ran into the always-lovely Maria S. at the bar buying a round for some Hoosiers!
Snapped some pix of my weekly Saturday a.m. trip to the Farmer's Market--where I used to see John Boutte regularly when I showed up earlier...(oops--my phone got run over by a Reindeer! so I'll have to pull the card, please stay tuned in! Thanks for staying tuned, here they are now! to the right and below:)

Paw Paw's Honey! Accept no substitute!
December 10, 2012...
Went with Maria S. to Buffa's last night where they are showing NOLASynchronicity films curated by Pat Jolly. Lolis Eric Ellie's doumentary about the Faubourg Treme which I had seen at The Historic New Orleans Collection was shown. Besides quaffing a few, downing some fried green beans and watching the film, we got a "Q & A" w/Lolis himself. He also graciously posed for pix with us (see pic to the right).
A great & fascinating history about the issue of equality and how the laws here were different than elsewhere in the country, how the Plessy v. Ferguson case was planned out here (and failed, but set the stage for the Civil Rights movement), and how Jazz was founded here as an adjunct to the cultural mix, mores and traditions.
"Faubourg Treme--The Untold Story of Black New Orleans"-- great Christmas present!
December 9, 2012...
Played for the Preservation Resource Center Holiday Home Tour in the Garden District yesterday (although one home is technically in what is known as the "Lower Garden District"--as in downriver, not lower ground) at the Walner's home on The Avenue. Perfect weather for a Garden Party! Here's my view from their Swankienda Patio and the audience view (see photos to the right).
Got free tix so got to gawk at how the other 1% live (please see Special Events for pix). Ran into Dave & Roselyn who also played, and on my way to see Matt (our drummer)'s band with his wife Melissa, Sweet Jones, playing at the 1846 house on Prytania (see pic below), saw John Goodman walking his dog! Had seen him on T.V. earlier in a Roseanne episode. Wow! I yelled, "Awesome! John Goodman!" but this time he did not yell back--I think that was his wife with him. Cute dogs.

Built b/t 1846-1849.
That night hung out at the "Sneaux Ball"--holiday party hosted by Michael (a/k/a Snowball (sp?)) and Mia. Their pad was all dolled up for the Holidays--great food & they provided the perfect hangover remedy: plenty of Prosecco. Ahh, the life.
Snowball remembered me from the "Checkpoint Charlie's Days" & made me feel good that all my crazyantics were not for naught--they actually entertained folks! His childhood friend was there, Keenan Pepper, co-owner of Le Bon Temps Rouler, and heavy metal guitarist (see pic to the right). M. knows these folks from The Bon Temps.
December 8, 2012...
Attended the CompMan annual Christmas bash last night at a Metairie watering hole. Got nosebleeds when we crossed the Parish Line--hahaha--(we used to say that about going outside of The Loop in Houston.)
Were treated to some great grilled oysters (scored the secret recipe) and caught up with some former work-mates from when I first moved here. Swapped stories about our friend Jim Taylor who has passed beyond our sight, & listened to the rowdy sounds of Hillbilly Casino, from Nashville.
Thanks, Greg & Greg! Beauty gathering as usual.
December 3, 2012...
The neighborhood Santa came out overnight--check out to the right.
See also Place St. Charles building decorations that grew out of the fountain! Danny was happening by so I put him in the frame to show how giant those nutcrackers are--to the right.
December 2, 2012...
The Historic New Orleans Collection's new photo exhibit officially opened today, "Merique," which documents the tobacco growing practises of a certain strain grown only in St. James Parish; techniques passed on in families that are now passing out of "fashion."
Stopped off at the Roosevelt Hotel to get in the Christmas Spirit (see photos below & to the right).

December 1, 2012...
Went kayaking on Bayou St. John with bayoukayaks.com. Beauty stuff: saw a snowy egret & pelicans flying over I-610! Lots of ducks and turtles, jumping fish, sunshine & great exercise. New way to see the town--like the Native Americans (sort of)!
Le Marche des Fetes (see poster to the right) was happening so we checked it out. John Rankin was serenading from the 2nd floor balcony of the Pitot House. Sampled some homemade satsuma-cello (yummy), and ran into a former barkeep of Banks St. Bar & Grill where we used to play regularly back in '01-'02 when she worked there, now the proprietor of the Pie & Sausage Company located across the street from the Bar. Didn't know my friend Lydia Ksionda was exhibiting her jewelry and got to see her pieces in person--instead of drooling over them on her website, www.ledajewelco.com.
Biked by John Goodman's home and yelled out "Hi, Mr. Goodman!" and he yelled back! Wow! When people from T.V. say hello to me it affects me in a profound & inexplicable way--just like Kelly (sort of)!
Stopped off at Phil Lamancusa's shop in the Quarter, Kitchenwitch Cookbooks, and was delighted (not only to see one of my idols, aforementioned owner of said shop) but also that my two entries made it into Radio Station WWOZ's Cookbook (with emphasis on KOOK). Never thought it would happen as I submitted my two recipes on more than one occasion to more than one person, but the book looks beautiful and benefits OZ! I'm published! I'm thrilled!
Check it out, $34.95 at 621 Toulouse Street--same block as One-Eyed Jacks! xox
November 28, 2012...
Day #2 Jury Pool yesterday--that Kelly is a dumb blonde in a nice way: "...makes me feel good to see someone I know on T.V. in a profound and inexplicable way."
Helen Hunt was their celebrity guest promo-ing her new movie which looks good and she calls a dream role of a lifetime.
Had to sit through an entire episode of "Price is Right" and a soap opera, but I did bring reading material. The potential juror next to me recommended Kelly & Michael Live Halloween show on youtube so I looked it up--pretty funny stuff.
In my Mom's day, soap opera characters worked as doctors, nurses and lawyers. Today, it's ad agencies and restaurants. Hm.
I was glad they dismissed one of us because he works as a doctor at LSU Interim Hospital--the place M. waited in the ER for 15-1/2 hours...
November 27, 2012...
Got called for Jury duty at Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans--next door to City Hall--all built on the ruins of Louis Armstrong's home & neighborhood. Hallowed ground-- guess that's why it's so crumbling--must be cursed.
We got our own bathroom, good coffee & I got hooked on "Live with Kelly & Michael," a 9:00 a.m. wonder broadcast from New York City: a semi-dumb blonde paired with an African-American former football player with a great sense of humor mulling over news items and interviewing guests: I got to see Jack Black (who was surprisingly not as funny as his hosts) and Carrot Top!
Got called in for questioning with 50 potential jurors and turns out I had worked for one of the law firms representing the many defendants in an asbestos case. Didn't get picked so got to get out early. Good thing 'cause if I do not work, I cannot keep myself in the lifestyle to which I have become accustomed.
The second group I was in for questioning lasted much longer. A woman sitting behind me, a Jehovah's Witness, had consulted with her Minister and declared that she was unable to judge another human being. The Judge was not happy with this remark and why would he? If everyone thought like this ("Vengeance is mine saith the Lord") he & his buds would be w/out jobs. I declared that all corporations were Bad Guys vs. the Little People so I was able to judge OK. Also predjudiced myself by saying that I knew one of the lawyers and because she would never say hello to me in the bathroom I could not be fair. (Hopefully she'll pass an apology note to me in Study Hall.)
November 26, 2012...
Watched HBO's Treme season finale at Buffa's last night (with a set of music by Kevin Clark & Tom McDermott) and got to float home after shaking hands with Clarke Peters... ("I know Lips") ...sigh... Maybe due to the bald head he's had to sport in the Series, he's grown some facial hair that looks really great! Met the director Anthony Hemingway and they pointed out the lady lawyer upon which Melissa Leo's character is based.
Just before the final Half-Season, Buffa's is going to play Seasons 1-3--fun to watch on the Big Screen w/other fans.
That morning at Church (in Real Life), Judge Johnson related the story that it was our minister's Mom (Rev. Ruth Murphy) that swore him in, then saw him on the Treme (in T.V. Life) and... (I can't say what he did since you might not have watched it yet).
Tom was at a grand piano accompanying John Boutte (in T.V. life), and in Real Life, Kevin & Tom played songs (of course) from the trad jazz era: "St. Louis Blues," "Sugar Blues, and Jelly Roll Morton's "Panama," but also "I'm a Girlwatcher" and an unusual version of "Stars & Stripes Forever" which I found funny as the week before when Aurora Nealand played with Tom I thought that if I had gotten ahold of some trad jazz numbers on my first instrument, clarinet (in the 3rd grade) instead of the John Philip Sousa book, my life might have turned out differently...
Realized that it was one year ago that Coco Robichaux left our midst. Appropriate to be amongst his people!
Also that morning in Church our Minister had her Thanksgiving service, explaining the need for an attitude of gratitude for EVERYTHING. (This helps especially during Saints game where we get thoroughly thrashed.)
November 22, 2012...
Thanksgiving. Hit the Race Track for Opening Day--what gorgeous weather. Saw a bunch of celebs including The Real D.J. Davis & family, Rod Hodges from the Iguanas, one of the Lee Brothers from Supagroup, James Andrews, various bartendresses, M. tripled his $$$ & I only ended up down a few ducats. No raw oysters, but decent beer. (see pix to the right).
I changed my strategy to bet on jockeys and seemed to do pretty well with that. Dig this guy:

Then it was home for Happy Eating:

Apple pie like my Mom used to make
November 21, 2012...
On my bike ride to work this a.m. someone was either baking a giant pie or many regular-sized ones because I swam through a very scrumptious aroma! Happy Thanksgiving, Y'All!
The camellias are busting out, our loquat tree and white ginger smell better than that pie--and plenty of other flowering goodies in the 'hood as you can see on my ride to the office. (to the right and below:)

Gardenias!
Plumbagos:

Our guest speaker at Church's message emphasized not just counting our blessings, but giving thanks in advance--pretty powerful--this stuff works!
Thanks for y'all coming out to see my band play & giving us lots of love and money! Thanks for winnin' a boat load o'dough at the Track tomorrow! xoxox
November 20, 2012...
Got stuck on an elevator in my building for 40 minutes! It's not that bad, really. Especially compared to that PBS Special I'd seen about the guy getting stuck for 40 hours! Ouch! Or the Israelites wandering for 40 years!
Good thing I'd bathroomed & lunched earlier or it would not have been as much fun: met some nice folks & this guy two floors above me is neighbors with someone I've known since before I moved here. Real small-town stuff--love it! Two of the five of us chose Galatoire's as their favorite restaurant in town. What are the odds of that?! I think mine is Restaurant August--gotta love anything John Besh-ian. May start carrying a pack of cards in my purse...
November 19, 2012...
Got to cheer Our Beloved Boys (The Saints!) on to victory over Oakland yesterday afternoon, and then on to more good viewing at Buffa's to see last week's and this weeks' episode of HBO's Treme. Special added attraction of sets by Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, crooner & pianist extraordinairre, accompanied by Freddy Staehle on drums and Tim Paco on the electric bass, in between Melissa Leo, Wendell Pierce, Clarke Peters, Khandi Alexander & Steve Zahn. Great stuff. (see pic to the right)
I love the sound of his voice & his tune list includes Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill," "Mathilda," a medly of "Shake, Rattle & Roll" with "Do The Twist," but the one that will stick to your ribs like roasted butternut squash soup is Oliver Morgan's "Who Shot the La-La?" Stupendous stuff! Al will be back at Buffa's for King's Day, January 6, 2013. Put it on your calendar.
November 17, 2012...
Hit the Fringe Festival's Tent at the corner of Press & Dauphine, at the fringe of the Bywater (see pic to the right). The Fringe Fest Parade sported a teeter totter (see pic):

A map guided us to the Fringe Fest Yard Art Tour in which we got to stop by Dr. Bob's Palace of Wonderment. Found out the story behind the Legend: seems he's a natural at birthing cows & people! Handy in an emergency. (see pix below and to the right).
Dr. Bob's Studio
On the way home saw Lady Di who informed me that another Bob, Bob French, jazz drummer, bandleader and former WWOZ deejay passed away last Monday! I've been under a rock!
74 years young, he'd been suffering apparently, requested to not have a big funeral or a 2nd line. Always went his own way; a talented man & outspoken--I liked him alot & remember the fun nights at Donna's on Rampart's, as well as his WWOZ radio shows (w/hostess Michelle Levine): "If you like it, tell your friends, if you don't like it, don't tell nobody."
Thanks, Bob & God Bless!
November 16, 2012...
Treated myself to Beaujolais night at the J.W. Marriott last night put on by The French-American Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hoffman (1936-2012) used to treat us since I came back to work for Rocky (who was his law partner for 31 years) in 2006. Missed him last night, but his wife Lou looked lovely, along with Dr. Heard's widow, Anne.
That George duBoeuf did a fine job on his gamay grape wine this year and went with a "plainer" label. Good stuff: pick some up for your Thanksgiving feast. Had a bit too much of that St. Hilaire sparkling from Dorginac's and Jean Luc's tasty nibbles from Maurice's. Yum.
Tonight we are doing our last Fairgrinds Coffeehouse gig before it gets too cold out there. Sunday, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson is playing between shows of the Treme at Buffa's. See ya out on The Town!
November 13, 2012...
Ate at Domenica's last night, saying good-bye to Debinsk & Matt. What a great visit--and to think we were JUST KIDS together! (see pix to the right and below)

Here's Lookin @ You, Kid!
November 12, 2012...
The Saints beat the UNDEFEATED Doity Boids (Atlanta Falcons)!!!!!!
Then Deb & Matt & I motored off to the Treme Gumbo Fest in Armstrong Park. Ate at Buffa's on Esplanade in anticipation of a recent Treme episode and were treated to music by Aurora Nealand and Tom McDermott and last week's episode! (see pix to the right).
We had not caught any of Season #3 and had enjoyed 1 & 2 (although I think there was too much music in Season#2(!!!???). In a Mardi Gras episode last night Alex McMurray, in a Marie Antoinette wig is performing "What do you do with a drunken sailor?" in a giant crowd of madness.
Then I had a dream about having to get shipped off to sea hoping my satchel made it onboard & hoping I would, too. So I only had 4 (or 5?) of those LA 31 beers--kind of tasty--thanks Matt & Deb for treating me! Had a superb time with y'all!
November 11, 2012...
Played the Ladyfest after-parade party at Michalopolous' cool studio on Elysian Fields. Our 2nd gig with new drummer Chris Lacinak--beauty timing for a beauty time! Thanks to Margie Perez, both Dave & Roselynn for sitting in with us. Turns out me, Margie Perez, Debinski & Matt all attended the University of Maryland, College Park--very cool. (see post-gig photo to the right)
November 10, 2012...
Bill de Turke's graciousness is only exceeded by his cool d.j. voice & enthusiasm for life. Got to go on the air and promote my large labias. Saw King of OZ David Freedman (I mean General Manager) & the d.j. who follows Gentilly Junior on Monday night--(met them both at La. Music Factory, Barry's Award at Gallier Hall a few weeks ago! (see photo to right) Cool to see them both together again! (Brought back by popular demand!)
Friend from college Debinski & honey, Matt arrived from D.C.-area and we caught Kermit Ruffins at Central City Fest--always a crowd pleaser! Irvin Mayfield was a special guest & wowed the crowd.
Then some Mardi Gras Indians performed! (see action photo to right) Great start to their whirlwind visit!
November 9, 2012...
Just found out my 10-year old CD, "Dance Babys Dance" (see CD Section and cover to the right) is on locobop with each song available for .99/each to your mp3 player (whatever that is-hahaha). Gave a listen--not bad! Gary Edwards' studio went down in the storm and along with it, tons of copies of it--currently out of print--I may need to purchase it!
Hoping to go on Bill de Turke's 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. WWOZ show today, to promote our Ladyfest gig tomorrow night--end of the parade party at Michaloupolos' Elysian Fields studio.
Old pal Debinsk (from college!?! and afterwards at aforementioned Book Sales) & her guy are coming in from D.C. Weather's warming up to the 70's--looking forward to some good times to write about on Veterans' Day.
Catch ya on the fleeyup side!
November 7, 2012...
Beauty outcome to keep the White House black! I loved President Obama's Victory Speech last night--check it out on YouTube if you haven't seen it--it's terrific.
Very proud to have him as our President calling for Unity now to solve our problems.
As Emmett Fox' pamphlet clearly states: "however strongly devoted you may be to any particular cause... the vital thing to remember is that any cause, however good it may be in itself, is secondary in importance to the supreme cause of national unity..." and further: "any newspaper, or any body of people, whatever it may call itself, who may seek unduly to fan the flames of political or sectional bitterness, is to be distrusted. As far as possible, such mischief makers should be ignored, because without material support, their efforts wither away."
Kind of like that Star Trek episode...
Our beloved President made this clear in his hopeful speech--we are "perfecting our Union..with God's grace."
November 6, 2012...
ELECTION DAY. Such a privilege.
Reading Emmet Fox' pamphlet, "The Historical Destiny of the United States" and how "the doctrine of the right to individual freedom on all planes, which belongs to man as the image and likeness of God; for that is what the phrase in the Declaration of Independence concerning life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness really means" is the "special work which the United States has been called upon to do in the history of Humanity."
Agreed that the treatment of indigenous people here was poor (to say the least); that the country was built on slave labor; and that our doctrines of competitiveness & militarism are not the wisest choices, but we are voting today!
We strive to the upward spiral progress of Man as the likeness of God. Amen!
Read Michael Moore's take on the election and he's right.
Hard to believe anything can trump last night's Saints' victory that we got to witness in the flesh due to my boss' generosity. Thank you! And did you know there is an Official Ice of the New Orleans Saints? Yes, you guessed it, "Crazy Cubes." Didn't see enough dressed-up people, but the crowd was pretty enthusiastic AND WE WON!!! Glad I'm not as much of a drinker as I used to be because Abita Amber on tap cost $8.75! Beauty night though and it rained again while we were going at it on The Gridiron. Saw some righteous plays and got to see them seconds before the Monday Night Football fans out there in T.V.Land. xox
November 5, 2012...
Topped off the Halloween Festivities with our Spiritual Communion at Church yesterday: "We have not come here by chance, but Spirit has brought us here" declared our minister, Rev. Ruth Ann Elmer, and at that moment we got the first rain in about a month!
"To drink of the blood of Christ and to eat his body is to lay hold of Divine Ideas of Life, Substance...and to bring these into visibility in our owns lives as Health, Wisdom, Peace and Love."
Before I moved here I always thought of this town as my spiritual home, but I did not realize it would have an actual outer manifestation until I went to the Unity Temple of New Orleans and heard Ruth Elmer speak. On St. Charles Avenue--you can get there from here.
November 4, 2012...
Went to the Mirliton Festival yesterday & saw Kermit Ruffins (see pix below & to the right). This little gathering at Marky Park has certainly grown:

Stopped by Dr. Bob's, M.'s old carousing pal & he actually managed a smile while chomping on a grilled cheese, looking a little bit like Peter Fonda. Sorry to be part of the Papparaxxxi, Doc! Love your stuff (see pix to the right, below and on his website drbobart.net). Thanks for having us over, Man!

While we were in the neighborhood, we sought out the Gate to the AfterLife on Rosalie Alley off of N. Rampart Street. Thought I could talk to maybe Coco or Uncle Lionel or any of the dearly departed, but just came away with some photos (see pix to the right), some Spanish moss on my hat & a restless night sleep.

November 3, 2012...
Biked a bit in the Annual Day of the Dead Parade in the Bywater last night. They start at Press & Dauphine & go to "The End of the World"--a spot where N. Rampart ducks into the River. Snapped some pix (see above & to the right), but I am sure the 'Net has much better ones. Saw Amzie's roomate, Will, and I found the pix I took of him and his feet. Here's me:
Yikes!

A Ghostly Presence
November 2, 2012...
Nice foggy All Soul's Day. Didn't make it to Lacombe last night, but Ralph Gipson (who originally turned me on to the scene way back when) sent me some pix--he works across da lake now & could go right after work from there. Convenient! (see pic to the right). God Bless Us, Everyone!
My friend got stuck with a police interview so I consoled myself with a trip to the Davenport Lounge to relish the melodious wonderfulness of Jeremy Davenport & his stupendous mates: Arnett Hayes on baby grand piano, Troy Davis on the drums, Jessie Boyd on the bass, and Aaron Fletcher on the alto sax (see pic to the right).
I read that All Souls' Day began in the Christian world in 993 CE at a monastery in Cluny, but there were plenty of festivals for the dead before that.
Day of the Dead celebrations were held by the Aztecs and other Pre-Hispanic groups, as far back as 3000 years ago. Skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth and these celebrations can be traced back to the Aztecs and other pre-Hispanic groups, as far back as 3000 years. Also the marigold (representing the sun rays, so the "deceased have not lost their place in the Universe") figures prominently so I planted some from seed.
November 1, 2012...
Happy All Saint's Day, Everyone!
St. Cabrini stopped by for a visit:

Le Toussaint and/or All Saints has been observed in Louisiana for over 200 years. When we pay our respects to those that have gone before us.
Visiting the Lacombe graveyards this evening for some Dias de las Muertas happenings, en francais, actually.

Yikes! Some scary creatures of the night were out last night...Saw Amzie at the Voodoofest--he did the poster this year with Coco... great to see the little kiddles out and about--fairy princess seems to be a popular costume for the younger set. And for the older set: pirates & Waldos. The hashers were out in full force, running in costume. Tons of folks festivizing. Such a night!
October 31, 2012...
Happy Halloween, Everyone! Voodoo Authentica is holding their annual Voodoofest at their cultural center, 612 Rue Dumaine (Dumaine Street to we Americains) for those wanting a more "authentic" Halloween experience (see schedule to the right).
From their website where you can order gris-gris and the like:
Who will be participating in today's events: Haitian Vodou Priestesses, MAMA LOLA & Mambo Maggie, New Orleans’ own Voodoo Priest Elmer T. Glover, Marie Laveau researcher Dr. Ina Fandrich, acclaimed local musicians Sunpie Barnes & Luther Gray of Bamboula 2000, Amzie Zardox and the Voodoo Authentica Ritual Troupe!

When I was in the third grade, I wanted my costume to be more "authentic" so I didn't wear regular clothes underneath it. My Mom tried to talk me out of it, but I was HeckBent--of course, the boys made fun of me, but I pretended I didn't care! I was Authentic!!
And for those wanting to mask and street party there is Jim Monaghan's Molly's on the Market Halloween parade this evening. Should be a great night! Have some fun!
And for those coming out of the muck of "Sandy" (my sister's name), our hearts go out to you--may your healing be swift and smooth. So glad to hear from Sally Ann that my D.C. friends were A-OK!

More black than gold this morning after the thrashing by the Denver Broncos last night...I guess getting beat by my brother's team isn't all that bad (???!!!) And what with Halloween rapidly approaching, appropriate (the black color, not the thrashing)(see pix to the right and below from Voodoo on the Bayou last Saturday night by the way).
Meanwhile, the Band is non-lethal:

Mark in lips shorts, Andre as Animal from the Muppets and me
And on stage:

Been seeing quite a bit of Halloween decorations lately--ghouls & spiders on porches; skeletons lazing in lawn chairs, but the real lazy bones of them all is on St. Charles Avenue. M. said they'd been adding to over the years & I had never seen it (see pix in Special Events).
October 25, 2012...
Spent six hours waiting for my guy to have a "procedure" at what used to be called "University Hospital" and is now "LSU Interim Hospital."
He came out fine and I got to finish and start again Emmett Fox' gem The Sermon on the Mount, first published in the '30s (that's 1930s) that I picked up at the used book porch in Boothbay Harbor, ME for 50 cents last Summer.
I think this was part of my camp with classes rehab I dreamed about because it helped me remember that worrying about the outcome of a situation is never as beneficial as praying about it which I did while waiting...
Last time I was at that hospital was when friend Craig O'Connell from Houston got his pacemaker replaced and came out for a smoke immediately afterwards in that circular drive out front. He believed himself indestructible as he had survived Vietnam, drug addiction and cancer, but was to succomb to cancer eventually...a crazy guy with a hell-bent attitude--owned a former shoe store in Galveston and let Karen & I stay there. Lots of fun and lots of energy--used to run that underground (literally) club in Houston, I cannot think of the name right now.
He stayed with me in New Orleans when I was working a nutty shift--1:00-4:00 a.m. and then going in at 4:00 p.m. 'til 8:00 p.m. down on Bourbon Street and sadly, we ended up parting ways and never "made up" before he made his "Transition."
Hopefully, he hears me now, and also is taking better care of himself, as is Mr. M. Amen!

Camy Sue Clough received her Spirit Award at "the Castle" on the Mall of the Smithsonian. Please see the Special Events Section!!! We are so proud of you!!!
October 22, 2012...
Dreamed last night my parents put me in rehab. It was more of a camp with classes, but my folks have been gone 20 years (Dad) and 10 years (Mom). I have cut down quite a bit on my imbibing, but I saw a skeleton in my landlady's brother's bird bath toasting me with a margarita glass this a.m. on my way to the office, so maybe someone is trying to tell me something... I drink to enhance my religious experience in life so I am not sure what the problem is...

Went to the Quarter for a bike ride yesterday and checked out The Historic New Orleans Collection's newest addition, the Perrilliat House, an 1825 building they refurbished into a gallery, meeting & office space at 400 Chartres Street. Laura Simon Nelson donated her extensive Louisiana art collection and they display a small portion of it in the two front rooms.
There's a lovely Newcomb pottery display and I saw a brochure for the Newcomb pottery exhibit at Madame John's Legacy, a building owned by Louisiana State Museum which had been closed for many years. Built in 1788 on Dumaine Street, I had never been inside it & I love Newcomb pottery, so M. kindly acquiesced.
When we arrived, they were on lunch (from 12-1:30pm) so we mosied a few doors down to Voodoo Authentica museum (since Halloween's coming up). I must say it is mostly "for tourists," but they have some informative displays including one about Papa Legba. On Halloween Day they are having their version of Voodoofest (not the one in City Park w/Metallica, et al) educating the public about Voodoo and how it's not all chicken-killing. This is the first year without New Orleans' own Papa Legba, Coco Robichaux in the flesh, so it should be a worthwhile visit.
Madame John's Legacy (as it is called from a George Washington Cable story "'Tite Pollette" about a woman who is bestowed a house) is a beautiful building built in the West Indies style. Definitely worth a visit with the Newcomb Pottery exhibit to boot!
Went home passing the last remaining Newcomb Pottery building at the old campus on Camp Street, just off of Washington Ave. The reason all those 50s-60s buildings are smack dab in the Garden District is because they tore down the College at that time. There is a painting of the old Robb Mansion with a gorgeous fountain at the Perilliat House exhibit--why would they tear that down?!
When we got home, M. was watching the New Orleans Council Chamber "raise your hand to demolish this building," and for once someone stood up and said, "I will not be responsible for this historic structure going down." HooRay!
October 20, 2012...
The white ginger in the front yard boomed in honor of our gig last night in the courtyard of the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse. Much nicer weather than when we were there in July.
Thanks to our stalwart fans & friends especially Kendall, Nate & Dominique! Thanks to stalwart newest-Trip Chris Lackinack for above & beyond, and of course Mr. M. for hauling the gear for me!
Great seeing and hanging out w/Johnny B., "Sister" visiting from Alabama and John Miller from the French Quarter. Good work, Mark--always a pleasure playing with you.
October 19, 2012...
Attended a lecture/opening exhibit, "The Open Mind of Lafcadio Hearn" at Tulane University last night.
Mr. Hearn, a journalist while living in New Orleans, 1877-1886, practically single-handedly created our City's seedy reputation as a place of freedom, and then moved to Japan supposedly because we weren't "wild" enough.
Because of his contribution in documenting and preserving Japanese culture and because his Japanese great-grandson gave the talk, there was much translation into Japanese from English, and vice versa, as well as alot of bowing. Sponsored, co-sponsored, hosted, co-hosted by many organizations from Japan to Nashville, from the Irish Society to Bruce Raeburn's Tulane University's Special Collections (which maintains first editions of his works, including a creole cookbook and his first novel set in Grand Isle, Chita), there was a lot of thank yous which included more bowing.
Me, I would have loved to see his accounts of Voodoo rituals at that time and his woodblocks.
I was impressed with Bruce's remarkable restraint during his opening speech which was translated into Japanese and he never once said: "What she said."
Found out that before Hearn moved to that lovely house marked with a plaque on Cleveland Avenue that he lived at 516 Bourbon Street. May pick up Starr's book on Hearn's writings or go visit Bruce and get a peek at those early documents.
Exhibit at Jones Hall gallery, Tulane campus for 10 days.

The bougainvillea our neighbors Patrick & Dr. T gave us bloomed in honor of Carolina's birthday today (see pix to the right).
Kind of like October--harmonious Libra turning into scary Scorpio...
The pomegranate tree at the Pitot House did not have any fruit on it, but the one on our balcony does (see pic to the right).
Mark Fowler (Trips guitar player)'s wife Pat McDonald Fowler had a painting at Barrister's Galery where we attended the opening--a powerful piece of the Voodoo goddess who protects women and children--fierce.
Other artists in the Pat Jolly-curated show, notably Pat Jolly and famed photog Sydney Byrd. I asked Ms. Byrd how she got so close to the Voodoo ceremony in Haiti and she shared a secret that she draws a line in the sand, steps over it, and becomes invisible!
Kudos to all in the show--check it out--it's good for you! Dios de las Muertas is approaching.
October 12, 2012...
Enjoyed an evening of Vino on the Bayou with my neighbor and school principal Kendall at the 1799 Pitot House on Bayou St. John (see pic to the right). Louisiana Landmark Society maintains the historic home as a museum and we can tour the inside.
Phil Sandusky was signing copies of his fourth book, New Orleans Impressionist Cityscapes. Saw him out painting in my neighborhood last week--impressive output--fast and great! Shows at Cole Pratt Gallery & will be signing on Thursday next. Hope to make it out.
Lovely night on the lawn where we will be playing for Voodoo on the Bayou Saturday, October 27!
October 10, 2012...
Dreamed I found some car keys in my stuff and realized I hadn't returned my rental car. I was frantically trying to calculate how much I would owe--astronomical, no doubt--it was getting past $1,000.00 when I woke up and remembered I forgot to report to jury duty on Monday. Ouch.
I consider myself a (fairly) good citizen so this disrupted my self-view; not to mention the: "failure to appear as directed may result in fine and imprisonment" warning, but I was consoled by the lady at Orleans Parish Civil District Court who just told me to come back today or tomorrow to get back on the schedule. Whew. I guess in a City that issues boil water advisories for bathing and closes schools due to low pump pressure, forgetting a jury summons is small potato stuff...
October 8, 2012...
Happy Columbus Day to some of us--and
HAPPY SAINTS
APPRECIATION DAY
to the rest of us!
Any self-respecting Saints fan had to be a little puffed up witnessing Drew Brees break Johnny Unitas' touchdown-passes-in-a-row-record (this is prior to my becoming a Bert Jones-Baltimore Colts fan). His son Joe Unitas was in the Mercedes Benz Dome ready to congratulate him when it happened. There was even a special appearance by Sean Payton at the request of Drew Brees, granted by the powers-that-be (you may recall the No-Sean Payton rule enacted for this Season. Argh).
And not to mention watching Marques Colston catch some winners! Wow, a nail-biter 'til the end; finally broke our losing streak. Whew!
October 6, 2012...
Last year at this time I was enjoying a high school reunion and last night we had a bit of a reunion at the hallowed halls of Checkpoint Charlie's where I helped celebrate Joshua T-Bone Stone's beeday (see pic to the right).
Want to send out a personal thank you to the fine folks from Zehnder ad agency for hanging and adding to the gaiety, if not drunkeness. The old band of Lips & The Trips with Matt El D'Arazio on guitar and T-Bone Stone on the drums was resurrected in between Bone's own band of The Happy Monster's and Domenic's acoustic stylings.
Checkpoint's hasn't changed much since 1995 (see pic to the right) when I first played there & its atmosphere is what keeps people coming back. Unfortunately, the smoke in that atmosphere has kept me from playing there for several years due to the health challenges of my guitar player.
But everyone still overly-imbibes, antics are many, and the gutter punks still hang out on the sidewalk w/their dogs. However, have you seen Esplanade Avenue lately? It is under construction to make it safe for the Super Bowl we are hosting 2013! I accidentally backed over a cement cone & knocked over someone's recycling receptacle sandwiching the FurryMobile into a legal parking spot. Oops.
Anyway, thanks again, Mr. Bone, many happy returns of the day! And thank you, Angelina, for that big hug. Sure do miss you and your greeting, "Ready for a Purple Haze?"

I don't know what debates the pollsters saw, but President Obama is always the Winner with me!
We finally have an intelligent AND caring, FAMILY man for a President -- let's keep it that way!
October 3, 2012...
Saw in the newspaper (no, our daily went non-daily) that the new St. Katherine Drexel Chapel at Xavier University's consecration will include a relic--a piece of St. Katherine's clothing--at the ceremony on Saturday. Always one for a healing vibe, I looked her up & found out she recently passed away (1950) and she was an American Saint. She did quite a bit of good and established Xavier U., but I was disappointed this was not an ancient piece of Sainthood from the Middle Ages.
Speaking of the Middle Ages, have you seen the new Catholic commercial that according to some, is "clever" in that it does not state the name of a Presidential candidate, but instead, talks of "values?" Like we do not know that President Obama came out for same-sex marriage etc.
The commercial opens showing the back of a blacksmith & well, all I could think of was The Spanish Inquisition--especially when the caption talked about the faithful having stood up and protected the sacred rights and duties of the Church in the past.
I used to be proud of my Catholic connection (my Father's family, my adopted hometown), but I have to keep hoping that they will get with the "Jesus program" and get back to praying for the best for all concerned.
October 1, 2012...
One of my bosses helped organize the Red Mass held at St. Louis Cathedral this morning (see to the right).
We could use a "Striped Mass" for referees after that Saints football game yesterday--we seek Justice!
September 30, 2012...
Last night M. & I went to see John Sinclair at Three Muses on Frenchmen St. He's the Cat's Pajamas & a nice guy to boot--has his "dues card punched on all four sides" that's for sure--check him out on the 'net then buy some of his product: he's got his own radio network in Amsterdam. You won't be sorry.
It's his birthday tomorrow & he's playing Wednesday at Chickie Wah Wah. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, John!!! (see fan club pic to the right)
September 29, 2012...
Saw John Sinclair last night at Twist w/Carlo Ditta on guitar--part of the Cutting Edge Music Fest. Stellar! Bought his CD Beatnik Youth--me like!
Found out our friend from the Farmer's Market, Jimmy Core passed away August 25, the day we were at Kate & Corie's wedding in Maine. He'd been battling cancer and we were sure he'd get through this "Valley of the Shadow of Death."
A remarkable man, we (me and my "Main Squeeze" as JC called M.) will miss you dearly, Friend and Agrarian. You are beyond our sight, but we still hear and see you.
(Seems to me some kind folks are going to the other side -- hopefully to help us all out.)
September 28, 2012
Eric Cager's Cutting Edge Music Festival honored Barry Smith & the Louisiana Music Factory (pumpin' out CDs of local musicians for 20 years now!) last night at Gallier Hall (see pix to the right). Long overdue--and nice of him to keep my cardboard tag up even if I haven't bootlegged my 2001 CD which went down in Gary Edwards' Hurricane Katrina on Canal Blvd.
Got my start in New Orleans thanks to the Cutting Edge--1993 I played at the old Howlin' Wolf w/Cowboy Mouth & Brian Stoltz band; 1994 at Lafayette Square Park; and 1995 at Checkpoint Charlie's where I was asked to come back and play monthly shows which I did for a year before moving here in 1996!
Ran into famous photog Jef Jaisun here for all the festin', met famous photog Curtis Knapp (see pix to the right) & met some new faces & saw some old pals.
Thanks, Eric for a great night at a great venue!
Very tall columns-no not twinkly stars, lights from One Shell Square:

Dr. John playing FOR FREE-OUTSIDE AT LAFAYETTE SQUARE PARK!!! What could be better? And me already with my bike parked because the office I work borders the Park. Niiice!
Now if only the self-appointed Concert Nazis would let me talk during the show, even if he and fellow Music Writer were also talking ("But we're talking about the Music--I'm here for the Music," he scowled at me).
What the hey! Saw a buncha old friends and dug the FUNK! John Fols is still putting out great guitar and Dr. John is kickin away! Love his voice, huh?!
Saw John Sinclair & his daughter, Johnny Sansone played before, my maiden name is Johns, DR. JOHN! Saw G.O.A.T. Carson, Lydia & Charlie, saw pic of Jill's brand new (that day) grandchild, coincidentally nicknamed "Mac" ("there are no coincidences"), rock'n'roll photog & Haunted History Tour owner, Sidney Smith & artist son Justin, Ernie, Lisa Hix & new doggie Zelda (who resembles my old dog Stripes), famous music writer Geraldine Wykcoff & her sister Lady Di, and Dylan James.
Great fun, great breeze, great Purple Haze. Fight the Hunger!
So someone had a bad day & didn't want to be bothered by me--so I bought his book back in the Summer & thought we were old pals...the coffee's hot this morning & the milk's cold--Life is Great!
September 25, 2012
Happy "2nd Spring" and Yom Kippur:
A pair of cardinals (Mr. & Mrs.) showed up on the balcony again this morning & despite the warnings of anti-bird feeders, I put out crumbs for their feasting. They mate for life!
The male feeds the female in courtship & their distinctive chirping is a welcome sound saying good-bye to the oppressive August weather. Some people say we don't have Seasons: well, there's Spring, Summer, and then there's AUGUST!
When I moved south (from D.C. to Houston), I was enamored with the "Second Spring" which is what we call "Fall," and instead of looking forward to a dreary Winter which always follows Fall "up North," we look forward to a semi-hibernation with the ground not being frozen solid for six months...the price paid for the Season of August...
Of course, there are those of us fortunate enough to escape the heat and humidity of August: our neighbors spent three months in San Francisco; we got to get out to Maine to the sweet temperatures and clear, clean air.
Yom Kippur and 2nd Spring: always a time for Renewal--no matter what the Season...
September 22, 2012
Sugarboy Crawford's funeral was today (famous R&B singer who wrote "Iko Iko"), but I didn't go as a decision to allow the family and friends their privacy...turns out I was destined to attend a funeral today anyway. My across-the-street neighbor Betty let me know that my next-door neighbor, Dr. Johnny Heard had passed away last Tuesday.
Dr. Heard had suffered an illness and when his old friend Don Hoffman passed back in May he declared, "I guess I am next."
I found out he was old family friends with the Hoffmans at one of the functions Lou and Don Hoffman used to always invite us--I think it was the Bastille Day Celebration at Canal Place. I saw Miss Lou at Ann Heard's after the funeral.
The funeral was at Trinity Episcopal Church, a lovely place with stained glass windows on Jackson Avenue. We sang and prayed and only one homily was given -- by the oldest (of four) boys, the one who resides in England with his beautiful French wife and their three children.
Grayson's words were sweet and touching. We were all invited to Communion which the family decreed as a special celebration for the attendees.
I remember growing up we kids would attend Church with my father (who was Catholic) & we were denied Communion as we had been raised Lutheran. This open-armed gesture made me shed another tear--this time at the love and consideration during their time of grief.
"My heart goes out to all of you on the death of Johnny. We are united in grief with the loss of our fathers.
I feel lucky to have known him, just as I feel lucky to know all of you. He was a man of great wisdom and wit. Such a kind and caring spirit. He will be greatly missed.
I am thinking of you and wish I could be there in New Orleans with you. Please know that I am there in sprit.
Sending you love and strength,
Donald Hoffman
San Francisco, California"
God bless you, Heard family as you make friends with your inner strength and happiness. God bless you, Dr. Heard as you travel on down your path. I'll miss seeing you out with your sweet dog, Chloe.

First in a series of music shows to raise money sponsored by "fightthehunger" was held last evening at Lafayette Square (see pic to the right). The Iguanas played and Greg Surrey, restauranteur and drummer from O.L.D., bought me a Purple Haze. The weather was lovely & so was Lady Di, whom I also saw...
September 19, 2012
Had a nice break in the weather what with it almost being officially Fall and all--when I was in Maine we had some trees fall (see pix to the right & below) during that stalled Hurricane Isaac.
This is on my bike ride home (smells like a forest right there)--the neighbors across the street said the tree fell like an old man--slow yet deliberate (kind of like Isaac). If I layed on my side I'd still be inside that trunk's diameter.
I don't like to show destruction--I'm just saying: all woodworkers, please come and get some materials--we have some beauts!
WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE!

And where it came to rest-Wasn't Ram-tough enough
September 14, 2012
When I was in Maine, I saw a very smart seagull flying with a mussel in its beak and dropping it on this rock until it opened (see pic to the right).
May we all be so skilled in figuring out solutions.

That was one spectacular wedding up in Edgecomb, Maine, Saturday, August 25, 2012.
Congratulations again to the Happy Couple--
Kate & Cory!!!!!
Photos forthcoming. The aforementioned SallyAnn Cobia Rogers took some great shots on Flckr and I have to figure out how to put them on here (sorry!)
The bride was radiant, the groom beamed, & we all partied at the gorgeous Summer home of Cory's folks in Edgecomb.
Lovely, lovely.
Saw all my pals from the old College Park, MD & environs days: Bob & Marty Anderson (my ex-next door neighbors--she's still sweet as ever; he's still a joke-telling nut), SallyAnn & Steve Rogers (they look exactly the same), Larry & Camy (Kate's folks), Richard (Larry's bro') & wife Terry, and famous D.C. architect Mark McInturff. Met some new folks, namely Steve & SallyAnn's handsome son, Ian & wife Katie, family, friends & revellers. What a fete!! With a fireworks display bigger than New Orleans' 4th!!!
See "SPECIAL EVENTS" for pix of wedding festivities.
Maine is lovely & smells like pine trees, but that was one weird vacation: M. took ill & then Hurricane Isaac struck so we were stuck. Want to thank my neighbors Kendall & Nate who volunteered and helped us out when we couldn't get home--THANKS A BIG BUNCHES!!!!
(See photos to the right for the "pre-vacation-went-south.")
Lips' Tip #6 (see "LIPS' TIPS" Category for #s 1-5): If you have an emergency illness, go to Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME. This is a top-notch facility with great folks to help you out.

SallyAnn Cobia Rogers' Maine lighthouse watercolor--WOW! You don't see someone for 34 years and they become this talented artist! She also makes her own jewelry: bluegatorjewelry--check it out online!
August 23, 2012
Going on vacation to Maine. My ex-boss' (who dubbed me Lips--see "IS LIPS YOUR REAL NAME" category) daughter's getting hitched and we had the fortune of meeting them when they came to New Orleans; then a wedding invite arrived!!! YAY!
Larry and Camy's daughter, Kate, is the perfect mixture of the two of them: She is adorable and her guy's pretty okay as well!!!
SallyAnn, a fellow colleague and friend from the old College Park, MD Book Sales days has a place up there with her hubby Steve and wrote that she got so tired of taking pix of lighthouses she took up watercolors (see pic above). Lovely!
A couple of blocks from where I work there is a building that once housed The Lighthouse for the Blind (see pic to the right) and I pass it on my bike every weekday a.m.
I think I'm really going to like seeing some lighthouses on the craggy coast of Maine...
And honestly, I wouldn't be able to go without the reassurance of my ole pal Robin looking after Pixie The Cat (see pic below). Thanks, Kiddo!!!!

Johnny Bee gave me this cayenne pepper plant a few years ago and the one good thing about August (besides the Saints at the Superdome, I mean the Mercedes Benz Dome, tonight) is the heat intensifies in these specimens (see pic to the right). This is for those of you craving Summer highway oddities like the five-legged lamb I saw on vacation as a kid...
August 15, 2012
Caught a glimpse of a hummingbird moth tonight in the front yard after the four o'clocks (at 8:00). Hadn't seen them in a few years--they used to go crazy for the kasmir bouquet (see pic to the right).
August 13, 2012
This morning's view (see pic to the right) of what I think is called a Brassidium Spider Orchid. The bottom petal is called a "lip," by the way...Read that orchids first blossomed 120 million years ago. This splendor certainly looks other-wordly. I'm lovin' it!!!
Was graced with freebies at the FoodExpo this weekend and hit Dirty Linen Night on Royal Street where we got to commune w/Angela King gallery's Dr. Seuss exhibit.
Whew, sometimes New Orleans is like an acid trip to which one wants to drink some O.J. and come down...
August 10, 2012
Look what bloomed in honor of my brother & Jerilynn's Anniversary! (see pic to the right)
I was astounded at this beauty. I'll try to get a better picture. There's going to be nine blooms.
August 3, 2012
Me & my friend Robin hit the town last night for Jeremy Davenport's show at his very own Davenport Lounge in the Ritz-Carlton.
Never disappoints! Thanks for my Birthday Refreshments!!!!
July 28, 2012
Found out that a friend's wife passed away after a long illness on the 13th. Melissa and Paul Kelly were co-workers and co-players of mine back in College Park, Maryland. Still kept in touch after they moved to Santa Fe & he played at Merlefest every year...
R.I.P. Melissa,Sweet-hearted Soul
July 26, 2012...
News today that Houston guitarist and an old pal of mine, Leo Aston passed away in the early morning hours...hard to believe that spirit was tamed. I guess he was looking to see his hero Stevie Ray.
I'm sorry I didn't get to say good-bye: Farewell, Old Soul--many good times together and I have the photographs to prove it!!!

July 25, 2012...
Friends of City Park were treated to a free evening of rides and snacks at the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. I about tossed that free Haydel's cream puff on the Music Express roundabout--yug!!! Their disclaimer described it as "aggressive" and not for children(!!!) Hurtling through space where I could die at any second was not amusing...But we did see the Superdome from the ferris wheel and I saw fellow history- andmusic-lover Warren Woods so the evening wasn't totally shot...

11 a.m.--Charbonnet Funeral Home The starting point for the Jazz Funeral for Uncle Lionel.
M. said, "Uncle Lionel waited for me!" (It was his birthday!)
[Please see Special Events]
July 21, 2012...
One of Uncle Lionel's requests was to hold his Funeral in a large enough place for thousands to attend. Mahalia Jackson Theatre fit the bill.
On the bill were family, friends, musicians, and all of us in the audience who loved and looked up to Uncle Lionel.
Another of his requests was "no crying"--It was a definite celebration of his life and of life in general with the brass bands and the Mardi Gras Indians all marching down the left aisle and up the right aisle of the auditorium. There were so many marchers that a solid line was formed. The mourners onstage were dancing and we audience members were on our feet.
Due to the heavy rain and flooding, and the cemetery being flooded, the interment and the Jazz Funeral Procession-Second Line were postponed til Monday.
July 20, 2012...
Turns out Uncle Lionel was not lying in state yesterday--instead, the coffin was empty & his embalmed body was leaning against a lamp post! The coffin looked welcoming enough with a pillow and an embroidered arc "Uncle Lionel" on the inside front cover, but he was having none of it.
See photos on nola.com. Music writer Keith Spera has a tale to tell.
Funeral today at Mahalia Jackson Theatre--with a jazz procession to beat the band. Love you, Uncle Lionel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 19, 2012...
FIRST OF ALL:
A BIG SHOUT-OUT TO AWESOME TRIPS GUITARIST,
FABLED & STALWART RUNNER OF THE
TIPITINA'S MUSIC CO-OP
AND COMPUTER-WIZ SAVIOR TO MANY MUSICIANS (MUSICALLY AND OTHERWISE)
MR. MARK FOWLER
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY
AND MANY HAPPY RETURNS,
MY FRIEND !!!
At work on your Special Day--
And to those visiting the Co-Op today, please adhere to the Birthday Slogan (to the right) not only today, but everyday!!!! Thank you.
The pink lily out back had six blooms, in honor of your Birthday! Looking forward to celebrating in person at the gig tomorrow (couldn't resist a plug).
The big thunder, lightning & rainstorm last night was in honor of "Uncle" Lionel Batiste laying in state today & being eulogized tomorrow.
Though I never had the opportunity of a spin on the dance floor w/Uncle Lionel, our band had the honor of sharing the stage with the Treme Brass Band at Tipitina's a couple of years ago.
And though I never knew him very closely, I was always happy to have a hello & a hug from this genteel gentleman on his promenades on the streets of New Orleans.
Mr. M. said that Uncle Lionel told him tales of caming from a line of tailors: that's how he learned to dress well and he made his own clothes.
We will sorely miss your graciousness, your friendly and kind spirit, Dear One!!!!!!
Blessings to you and to all those missing your presence (including me).
July 18, 2012...
The pink lily out back bloomed again! This is the one I had to dig up due to the excavation and it had bloomed in the pot--now, back in the ground, happily blooming again! Almost stepped on a frog last night happily hopping (the frog, not me) across my pathway in the backyard. Looked like the one I saved. Gave it a dish of muddy water as it hopped to safety. (How can people eat the legs of these fellers/gals?!)
July 17, 2012...
I have a day job in office buildings downtown (the CBD as we call it--Central Biz District--once known as The American Sector). Recently moved to the 46th floor where I have a room with a view (see pic to the right). We only went up nine floors, but the air gets a bit thin...while everyone else is madly checking their messages on their handheld devices waiting for the elevator, that's me hoisting up my bra strap counting the hours 'til I can see some sunshine and daydreaming about my next day job as a dancing instructor in Argentina or an olive grove keeper in Italy.
Very happy to be working in air-conditioned comfort howsomever...
July 15, 2012...
Carried on the Purple Haze weekend tradition at Sidney & Justin Smith's Pool Party. Crazy! [And I thought pH was a "girl beer."]
Sidney Smith, you may recall, owns Haunted History Tours, and is that rock-n-roll photographer who has everyone on celluloid because he was the photographer at that club on Tchoupitolous [that I forgot the name], met and toured with numerous Rock Gods (including the Allmans)...
The first band at the party got pelted with a downpour so we played inside which made for a more cozy, intimate feel with percussion participation from our fellow party-goers.
Also, inches from many photos such as the likes of Mic Jagger in his heyday made for great inspiration! Great food, great fun--THANKS A WHOLE BUNCHES!!!
July 14, 2012...
"Vive La Revolution"--pedalled to The U.S. Mint and caught Sun Pie Barnes & the Louisiana Sunspots (hot stuff!) for Bastille Day celebration. Also went to Faubourg St. John's celebraton on Ponce de Leon in front of where we play at the Fairgrids Coffeehouse every third Friday (couldn't resist the plug for our gig!).
My ex-Trips guitarist, Raphael Bas was playing some really nice French music with Bart on accordion, Tim (a great bassist I first met from John Rankin) & a gent on sax/clarinet.
Ate some deelipshus crawfish empanadas from Santa Fe served up by the lovely Chloe Seydel and partner Troy; & drank a fewPurple Haze beers. People-watched & talked with Dynamite Trips guitarist Mark Fowler, his wife Pat McDonald Fowler, and Phil Rupp (I call him "Cowboy Bob.") who turns out knew The Fugs (rock band), Jon Sinclair ETC. Farrrrout.
Spied a hawk in the parking lot by Lee Circle on the way, on its prey. Too far away to tell if it was yanking apart a rat or a cat...Looked up on the internetre: omens of seeing a hawk...
July 13, 2012...
"Uncle" Lionel Batiste's second line parade; and Benefit at Sweet Lorraine's on St. Claude featured Deacon John, Kermit Ruffins, & Michael Ward, among others. Great show at a cool spot for a great man!!!
July 12, 2012...
The white ginger bloomed out front, maybe in honor of M. being called "white" at the Wal-Mart yesterday... Yes, lady in the electrified wheel chair, but he is black where it counts.
July 11, 2012...
A hawk flew off my balcony railing when I opened the door to check on Pixie (my cat). Hopefully, my 14-pound cat did not look like a tasty morsel!!! It flew to the phone wire in the middle of the street and didn't leave til I approached it with a camera. Pretty spectacular sight, but hide your small mammals!
July 8, 2012...
"Uncle" Lionel Batiste passed away. Go on the 'net to see pictures and stories of this iconic gentleman--and a gentleman he was/is/and always will be!!!
God Bless you, Uncle Lionel & your loved ones you leave behind. The world is a less elegant, friendly & sweet place without you...
July 7, 2012...
Enjoyed Local's Day yesterday at the NOLA Brewing Company on Tchoupitoulas. Right in our own neighborhood! Peter Caddoo started it with another go-getter. I knew Peter from a mutual friend & he was formerly Dixie Brewery brewmeister (got a personal tour--climbed up to the flag). The NOLA Brewery is just a one-story tour, but I felt sky-high after a few of their strong beers. Very tasty!
Jay had a book signing & I bought one (even if I wasn't in it). Kudos to Melanie & all the Gang at the brewery. Carrying on the New Orleans beer making tradition (we used to have Falstaff & Jax ETC here).
July 6, 2012...
Enjoyed a very Happy Birthday yesterday! Cocktails, time w/my guy, phone calls from family, notes, cards and gifts from well-wishers, great meals & a special beeday song from Jeremy Davenport at the Davenport Lounge! Not to mention Ingrid Lucia, fab Chanteuse pinned a fin on my money pin! Outstanding! Thank you, All, for thinking of me and for all the Love !!!! xoxoxox
July 3, 2012...
Happy Birthday tomorrow, Danny (altho he goes by Dan since the 7th grade)! Yes, those fireworks are for you!
And Happy Fourth tomorrow, Everyone Else!
I'll be starting my Birthday Weekend Festivities and will be raising my glass to each and everyone reading this! Blessings Abound!
July 1, 2012...
Our minister had a sub today & he spoke about Enlightenment. He's more of a Buddhist than a Christian, but it comes out the same spout. He also spoke, in honor of Independence Day, of freedom from fear. A noble pursuit, and wouldn't it make life much simpler?
June 30, 2012...
I knew it! Laying there--embedded, but exposed--an old medicine bottle and nearby, a piece of glass (see to the right). I was so happy and proud; like I'd found an Egyptian mummy.
June 27, 2012...
The Excavation has begun & my landlady decided it was a good time to re-concrete the front sidewalk so they had to take out a part of the fence to allow us access to our apt. So far, no relics, but I'm an archaeologist at heart, so something is bound to turn up.
The survey from 1896 shows a privy right there (when our house was the backyard of our next door neighbor's) and I have found lots of old glass bottles and interesting pottery pieces while gardening.
June 24, 2012...
Attended Voodou Priestess Sallie Ann Glassman's St. John's Eve Blessing Ceremony on the Bridge over St. John's Bayou last night. (see altar to the right) Both M. & I got our heads washed & I dreamed of a beautiful snowfall... Lovely! Thank you, St. John, Marie Laveau & The Devotees who chanted in French and danced!
June 22, 2012...
Found out Plumber Jim may be assisting in the demise of the plants I have nurtured in the backyard of our rental the past seven years. But assisting us getting our pipes back in shape. Can always use some of that!
I was pleased my pink lily bloomed again this year. The white hibiscus and roses of sharon that Lisa gave me are looking great in the front yard (see pix to the right).
I was noticing some nice flowers on my bike ride to work. See the crepe myrtle across the street from George Washington Cable's former home. And the bird of paradise next door.
A lotus flower pond in somebody's front yard I love to see--finally stopped and took a picture of it.
Hopefully, something good will come of the backyard excavation. Like I find some ancient relics and start a religion, or open a museum.
June 21, 2012...
My friend Robin & I met for a libation in the outdoor courtyard at Cafe Ranie last night to bring in the Summer Solstice. Her lovely daughter Jenny, works there & it was pleasant catching up under a giant tree. Since Robin (see December 11, 2011 entry) reads my diary I didn't have to talk as much although that didn't stop me much. Thanks, Sweetie! It's been too long!
Came home to a gourmet dinner from my guy. Ahh, settling into the sweet heat of a New Orleans Summer...
June 20, 2012...
Happy Summer Solstice! So we're not closer to the Sun as I previously thought, but it has to do with the tilt of the Earth, and I can certainly identify with that. Anyway, Ancient Societies, being closer-linked to nature and The Earth paid close attention to this day. I read that 12:00 noon was the actual moment so I availed myself of the opportunity to catch some sun shine at Lafayette Square which borders the office I work. The Sun felt good and I always love(d) Summer since I hated school and my birthday pops up in July.
I read that Stonehenge now opens up for "limited access" to a "blast from the past" celebration. Kinda wished for an Ancient Druid gathering out there at the Square so I could return to the office even more spiritually refreshed. Had to be satisfied with the Ben Franklin, John McDonough & Henry Clay statutes (see pic to the right) and some dog-walkers...
June 19, 2012...
Happy Juneteenth! I just found out that about 40 States commemorate the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, June 19, 1865, (See "General Order Number 3" to the right)the date the Union soldiers landed there and over two years after the slaves were declared freed by Pres. Lincoln (September, 1882 to take effect January 1, 1863).
When I lived in Houston, Juneteenth celebrations held at Miller Outdoor Theatre were three nights of great (mostly) blues music. I had the opportunity to hear Lightnin' Hopkins, (and meet) Johnny Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton (who was skinny by the early 80's) and a young Stevie Ray Vaughan (in 1979, not yet "Double Trouble"--they were "Triple Threat" with Lou Ann Barton as lead singer) all outdoors, and all for free!
Another great day to pause and ponder the benefits of our free society today--and to listen to some great music!!! I saw that Juneteenth this year in Houston featured Milton Hopkins who I used to see at a little club in the Heights...for free!
June 15, 2012...
Played our usual 3rd Friday of the month at the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse. Kendall brought her folks visiting from Connecticut and Maria & Rob brought their buds. It was robust and feisty with the dancing and what-not. Bumpin' & Grindin'--Thanks to all especially my fab band, The Trips, Mark Fowler & Adrian Piano and Wade at the coffeehouse for having us.
June 14, 2012...
Happy Flag Day! Learned that today in 1777 the 2nd Cont. Congress adopted our flag. (see 1917's 140th birthday poster to right). Come to think of it, my website red is pretty patriotic.
I sure like Michael Moore's take on patriotism. Just re-read his note on the Death of Osama Bin-Laden...
June 13, 2012...
Dreamed some people were looking for a missing elephant and I saw it among a stampede which included two lions. Fortunately for me there was a door into which I could duck into an empty room. Fortunately for the lion, there was another door for it to enter. I tried to hide from it behind the door and then by shutting my eyes; it was vanquished only when I imagined flinging it out the window. It was hanging by a claw when I woke up.
On my bike ride to work, I saw what I thought was a crow on the road in front of me, turned out to be a hawk. Lots of societies pay attention to "omens."
I asked the hawk not to eat any frogs.
June 12, 2012...
Saved a frog from drowning today. Really made me feel good. Like I did something worthwhile for a change! Poor lil feller was panting hard when I pulled him from certain death. Save a life--it'll make you feel good. Even if it's a June Bug in a puddle--do it!
It's a Lips Recommendation!
June 10, 2012...
My friend from Jr. High School's birthday & I sent her this pic of my flowers blooming on our balcony. (see photos to the right)
June 9, 2012...
Spent the day recording some songs for our upcoming CD. I don't know how people can churn out product like they do. Haven't recorded in 10 years almost to the day--so painful, yet I need to download these items.
Hoping fabulipshus it will be! How can I lose with Mark Fowler on guitar and Adrian Piano on the drums?!!!
June 8, 2012...
Rode bikes to Vino on the Bayou at the Pitot House on Bayou St. John. Beautiful historic home, now a museum. Landmarks Society holds these monthly get-togethers with Cork & Bottle providing the vino.
I like to visit the pomegranate tree there and view the bayou from the balcony. The wine's good, too. This was the last one 'til it gets cooler again.
June 7, 2012...
Attended Miss Edna's funeral at Unity Church. Our Rev. Ruth Ann Elmer gave a comforting message about the everlasting life of a soul and how even though we won't see Miss Edna, she is with us--she has just travelled down a road we cannot see.
Relatives (she had many!) spoke and a devoted friend, all tearful, all having a hard time letting go.
I can't imagine Miss Edna being comfortable with all that sorrow; she was always so up, in a stalwart way- not an ounce of fake-cheerfulness. She loved to laugh and to love. She loved Life period. And she loved her folks. Boy did they love her!
Back when it was still legal to lay hands on people, Miss Edna was part of the "women in white" that did healings at our Church. I wasn't around then, but the lines were out the door, as I've been told. She still did healings on me and M. and she still had "the touch."
The Church was packed that morning and I'm not saying I did not shed a tear, but I know that she is happy where she is and wants us to be happy, too. Just like she wanted when she was on this side. We will miss that hug and kiss on Sundays and hearing your unmistakeable voice!!!
Another poem:
I will wait for you...
I will wait for you...
Though we never had a chance to say goodbye,
Remember me...
When winter snows are falling through a quiet sky
I'll remember you
When, in our darkest hour,
You held my hand and prayed I wouldn't go,
But a silent voice called out to me;
My time had come, and I had to travel Home...
Since then, I know your life has never been the same,
For I visit you each day:
So many times I've felt your pain:
I've watched you cry:
And I've heard you call my name...
But now, further along life's road I stand
In a timeless world, just beyond your sight,
Waiting for the day when I can take your hand and bring you across
to this land of Golden Light...
Till then, remember me, you understand-and try not to cry.
But if you do:
Let your tears fall
For the happiness and joy we knew,
And for the special love we shared,
For love can never die.
Stephen O'Brien
June 6, 2012...
They extended the Lafayette Square music series an extra week to accomodate one of my faves, Jeremy Davenport (and company!). I always take out of town friends to the Davenport Lounge so it was fun having him come to my part of town-I work in a building that fronts the Square. I'm not a big fan of masses partying on this historic park, but I took exception and purchased a $4 Abita Purple Haze on tap & got up front (see pic to the right).
June 2, 2012...
The annual Gemini Party was on the Batture at Tony's again this year. Lady Di and all the "Visionaries" (as Geminis are known) throw a party for the FOG (Friends of Gemini) with music, dancing, libations and this year: on the beach, as the Mississippi River's low level availed us a large spot in the sand compared to previous years.
The Batture (pronounced "batcher" here, but from a French word, of course) is the place between the River and the Levee and in this case, home of about a dozen homes (formerly "camps" as they are sometimes over the water; shifting terrain). Before they built the levee system, there were many batture homes all along the River from this spot at the Jefferson Parish line where Oak Street runs into (the old gambling establishment) Southport Hall up to the French Quarter. This is a wild spot in the midst of a City-scape that has to be seen to be believed.
Jimmy Fagan ate some fire; Justin Smith fed the bonfire with driftwood; and Lady Di's sister, noted Journalist Geraldine Wyckoff and I did the twist in the sand like we were in a surf movie.
Music's always good w/Red (from Eddie Bo's old band) on sax & flute and Charles Otis sitting in on vocals. "Rapture on the Batture" it's called and it was indeed.
Thanks, Y'All!
June 1, 2012...
Behold! I make all things new!
Came home to a sweet ride this evening. M. picked up (as in purchased) a new pink bike for my riding pleasure! W/a more stable basket and a bell sporting a sticker w/a skull & a bow on its head! A little bit bigger frame--Mike the bike guy on Magazine Street--a much better bike! Thank you, Sweetie!
May 31, 2012...
Went to see our friend from Church, Miss Edna, 94 years young, at the nursing home last night where she'd had a close brush with death a few weeks ago. We'd seen her on the weekend and she was chipper & happy--looking forward to her family coming the next day and playing cards.
Now she was back in hospice on O2.
Doc Watson passed yesterday so I had a funny feeling--we see Death come in threes...A little bit after midnight she "made her transition" as we say at Church. She "took her Light into another room in Our Father's Great House"...
Found some bereavement poems that seemed to comfort me:
Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!
Mary Frye (1932)
and this one, too:
By Herself and Her Friends
If I should go before the rest of you
Break not a flower nor inscribe a stone,
Nor when I'm gone speak in a Sunday voice
But be the usual selves that I have known.
Weep if you must, Parting is hell,
But Life goes on, So sing as well.
Joyce Grenfell
God Bless You, Miss Edna, and all your Loved Ones--you are in the snowflake that kisses our checks and the songs we love to belt out! You were a sweet and healing balm to our crooked places and even though we won't see you coffee-hostessing like you did for 40 years at Unity Church, we will feel you in the love and joy of life we share(d). See you on the Other Side, My Friend, Dear Sweet One.
May 28, 2012...
Memorial Day. Our Minister, Ruth Ann Elmer, about to turn 90 years young this Summer, talked of courage and the Biblical events of Jehosophat and his taking a stand with God in the face of adversity.
Even to the point of going forth singing when confronted with challenges! Turns out the three armies that were out to destroy the Israelites turned on themselves instead & all that was left for Jehosophat & his Tribe to do was to collect the spoils...
My little pink bicycle with the lovely bell on it that M. bought for me was stolen, so I went forth singing, and as a musician, it's easier for me to do that...I viewed the surveillance tape and a pregnant lady rode off on it, so she probably really needed it. Rocky told me that someone who needed a job stole it & now they can have a way to get to work & will no longer steal from people. M. told me "It's just stuff," he'd buy me another one, and Trips Guitarist Mark Fowler offered me the one in his backyard.
Yes, it is all just stuff & I've often thought about sharing umbrellas--like when you go in the building, you give it to someone leaving the building and so forth, but my little pink bike was part of my identity and my freedom...
Letting loose of things and of people is essential in life as change is inevitable and maybe should be sought after, however, losing my bike and my boss' partner just put me in a big funk.
I'm just glad it wasn't my FurryMobile or my cat. God Bless You, Pregnant Lady, may you use that bell with the gladness I did.
May 26, 2012...
Attended the funeral service celebrating the life of Donald Alfred Hoffman who was my boss' partner for 30 years; being recruited by him out of law school.
I worked with him for a fraction of that time, but was treated to many events of a celebatory nature by Mr. Hoffman during that time:Beajoulais tastings, Bastille Day Celebrations, he even bought us all lunch at the Palace Cafe last year for his 75th birthday!
A very generous man, not only a personal level, but I found out also as a member and founding member of many social, historical and economic foundations.
How can you not love a guy who enjoys life (& Boudreaux jokes) like that? We love & miss you, Mr. H! Blessings to your beautiful wife Lou & family! You will be sorely missed by many.
May 25, 2012...
Had another dinner date with Bobette & thought we'd have a quiet bite at The (historic) Napoleon House. Fat chance of that with the crowds here for Memorial Day. I'm not used to sharing my spots with noisy drunkards, but I guess I used to be like that, so what am I complaining about?
Back in "The Day" they built this place to shelter Napoleon; they were going to spring him from Elba, but he died before they could. It's got a great couryard and old-time appeal. The scene from the movie Runaway Jury where they sock it to Gene Hackman at the end was filmed there.
Really great salads and a refreshingly lovely Pimm's Cup! Thanks, M'Dear. You are a Gem of a Gem!
Rich, her husband arrives tomorrow, so I have a feeling I won't be seeing much more of her ... Really had fun catching up and thanks so much for treating me!!!!
May 24, 2012...
Bobette, my aforementioned friend from Houston, & I ate at Domenica's, then enjoyed the musical stylings of Jeremy Davenport at the Davenport Lounge, where else? I'm getting to be known as a "frequent flyer" there and I'm glad--I love to bring folks there and on Thursdays, it's an early show. Brilliant stuff!!!
May 23, 2012...
Met my friend from Houston, Bobette, visiting for the Astrology Conference. She bought me dinner at the Palace Cafe (yum!) and we caught up. Had lost touch with her until we ran into each other in the Quarter, both taking a walking tour about a year and a half ago. We originally met while working together at Enron in Houston in the mid-90s before I moved here. She had visited a few times and we always had a big time.
May 20, 2012...
M. & I joined the Divine Ladies and their uptown 2nd-line beginnng at the corner of St. Charles and Jackson Avenue. The Hot 8 Brass Band marched and these ladies were both divine and hot--(photos to right.)
Afterwards, we met Shannon & Jason Rinaldo at Ernst Cafe for some Purple Haze and conversation before their leaving back home (for now) to Lubbock. Love these two! (see photo to the right) CUTE GLASSES!
May 19, 2012...
M. & I once again went on the Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl held in conjunction with the Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo music fest.
We like it not only because of our love of bike-riding, the access to places we wouldn't "normally go," sanctioned drinking in the early a.m., but also especially this year for the Special Guest of Honor, Mr. Al "Carnival Time" Johnson! Stop No. 4 was The Green Room (not the original one, but still a hot/cool spot) as in "The Green Room's smokin' and the Plaza's burnin' down."
Al shared a bit of folklore there from the time he wrote his Mardi Gras Anthem, "It's Carnival Time" and where I had my first beer at 9:30 a.m. and a sentimental cry over a great guy who is all about the Love & the Fun, Mr. Al.
What a class-act! A sweet man to boot who is a great singer & piano player--I love it when he has his solo gigs!!!
Our friend Jason & his wife Shannon were visiting from (Buddy Holly & Joe Ely's) Lubbock, Texas where they teach at Texas Tech out in the middle of nowhere (look at a map). She was here to receive a teaching award and he rented a bike for the Crawl. (I love it when friends like to join in with the nuttiness.)
Mr. Al was chauffeured around on a teeter-totter of a three-wheeler by our tour guide who reminded us at the start of our tour (at the new Rouse's grocery store downtown) that the CBD was once a vibrant & thriving neighborhood at the turn of the Century (20th), home to Louis Armstrong and the Jazz greats. (Read Louis' 1st autobio). Not much is left, (in a city that is so preservation-minded)... there's the Eagle Saloon and a few others there by the corner of Loyola Ave. & Poydras Street, but City Hall wiped out Louis' boyhood home & many others...
I certainly feel different about the hallowed-ground where I work in these downtown offices. Most is a parking lot now,and at the corner of Lafayette & Rampart once stood the hotel where Louis & his wife spent the night!
Speaking of Mr. Armstrong, it's always fun to see Louis' 1949 Zulu King photo at the Headquarters. The Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club had its annual fun-run & we got to come to the festivities again this year at their place on Broad Street.
I was surprised I made it to the last 2 stops, the Soprano's Meat Market and Pal's Lounge, and then instead of anymore outdoor sunshine, we opted for a shrimp po-boy and an Abita Restoration Ale at Parkway Bakery (they only have oyster po-boys on Mondays). Met some new people, got to hang with my ole pal Jason and had an educational experience to boot. Life is good.
May 7, 2012...
Realized the peace, love, music & grooviness was at an end when, while biking to work in the a.m., I said hello to a crazy woman crossing the street oddly, holding a nicely-painted foot-high statute of Jesus and she yelled for me to kiss her a---!!!! The hair on my back was up for a block or two...
May 6, 2012...
Last day of the Fest & we saturated ourselves with the likes of The Creole String Beans, Supagroup, Charmaine Neville, Davina & The Vagabonds, New Orleans Moonshiners, Ed Volker, Bonnie Raitt and my absolute fave of the Fest, Boutte Family Sunday Praise: Trisha Boutte (Sista Teedy) with the whole fam damily harmonizing it up--all great talents on their own--synergy! Of course the close out with The Neville Brothers! Wow. I hope y'all can make it out next year!
May 5, 2012...
One of my favorites, Allen Toussaint brought up Cyril Neville (announced that Cyril was from Planet Soul) to do a song about the old Treme. They both were all duded up in these fine suits, but they had to be uncomfortable. 15-piece band.
John Boutte! Better than Ezra! Aaron Neville's Gospel Experience! (I was accused of living in a New Orleans Bubble--buy, hey, it's nice in here!! Very Bubblelipshus!)
Went to James Michalopoulos' studio for his usual Jazz Festreception--he's done several Jazz Fest posters & sells them as paintings: Mahalia Jackson, Dr. John & Allen Toussaint. Since he is part owner of New Orleans Rum Company, M. likes to sample the product & this new "Gingeroo" was enticingly refreshing--can only be purchased at the Distillery.
May 4, 2012...
Once again left the office early for an afternoon/evening of music at the Jazz Fest! Caught Marcia Ball (of course), Deacon John (of course), and Ziggy Marly (part of his Wild and Free Tour). Ate some tasty items and ran into a bunch of friends (new & old). Stopped off at Rocky & Meg's for more brewskies and a free T.V. Stellar!
May 3, 2012...
My nice bosses let me leave work early to attend the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Kelly & Regina McGrathhad bestowed free tix on M. & I to go all weekend! Niiice.
Got to see my bass idol, George Porter, Jr. both playing on stage & an interview inside the grandstands. Great stuff. Made it to Rosie Ledet, Zydeco's sweetheart--love her!
Camped out front row Blues Tent to see James Cotton "Superharp"--was SUPER! Top notch--Orphaned at age 9, learned harp from Sonny Boy Williamson, played with Muddy Waters--this man isLARGE!! Great band, too.
Found some decent beer again. Abita!
May 2, 2012...
Long Tall Marcia Ball played her usual Wednesday on the Square show (between Jazz Fest weekends). Turns out I had worked with her brother, Van, at Enron in Houston back in the '90s--we never believed him that he was related to her!!! Sorry about that, Van! Wondered what had become of him--it was great hearing Marcia, seeing Van, and getting a hug from her bass player, Don, who I used to have a crush on during same-said time period.
May 1, 2012...
Attended another Ernie K-Doe bio book (by Ben Samdal) release happenin' at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe last night. Marcia Ball sang with a house band "Blue-Eyed Soul" & posed with me for photos by Horton, the official photographer I had met at the"My Dahlin' New Orleans" benefit recently.
Wow! Met some twins from Wisconsin that come regularly for the Fest's & all the festivities (they went to Snug Harbor later). Was standing at the bar (where they have NOLA Blonde on tap!) telling them about HBO's Treme series when on the other side of me a gentleman's receiving a beverage: I'm feeling frisky after one one-half pint of said beverage & say hello. When he asks me how I'm doing, I say, must be pretty good, I'm talking to strangers! And he goes, "I'm Eric (dramatic pause)-- Eric OVERMEYER. (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I flipped out! I just casually met the creator/writer/producer of one of my all-time favorite shows. I asked him for a hug & he gave it to me. Before I could gush myself into humiliation, the music started up--thankfully! But thank you, Mr. Overmeyer, wherever you are, thanks for a great T.V.-viewing experience!!!! HBO's Treme is like a home movie--only well-produced!
April 30, 2012...
Another Annual Crawfish Boil--this one coinciding w/Gil T.'s Birthday--(see pic of Gil T. in Wonderful Foks Section) boil by Shaggy! held at the Kerry Irish Pub. Gil's a music-loving, great visual artist I met before I moved here hangin' out at Checkpoint Charlie's. He was in great spirits, most of them being served up from Lynn, our barkeep. When I used to play regularly at the Kerry I used to always get the "Black & Tan," but ordered a plain ol 'Tan (Harp on tap) to accompany my great-priced Shaggy's non-sausaged (Yay!) crawfish. Really great & spicy!
"Jarrod?"
"Lips?"
Hadn't seen this feller, the once-Bouncer at Checkpoint's in many moons. When I used to date Dave Spring, Irene & the Mikes' bass player, Dave would say, "I want to be Jarrod." Part Samurai, part Viking--we'd see him around the Quarter with his husky dogs...
One time thisrascal-patron was really tearing it up at Checkpoint's & Jarrod had enough of his antics & not only got him down on Decatur Street, but when a city bus wanted to get by, Jarrod took a quick second to flip off the bus driver and then continue his "work."
Despite his rough exterior, this guy has a heart of gold & it was great seeing him, as well as Goldie, who was the once-bartender at CP's & the present-bartender, Angelina.
Also saw Danielle, Coco Robichaux' (widow? ex-wife?) & Mr. M. got to tell her the story of how he first met Coco at the Hideout one afternoon only to go home & see him on a Popeye's commercial that night...
And another Checkpoint's alumnus, Dylan James, singer, songwriter, madman & videographer/photog who showed me his 1,001 shots of Bruce Springsteen he had gotten the day before. Should have been front-page shots!
Foot (Pete Braddish, Irene's one-time drummer) & Friends let me sit in on a couple of numbers. It wasn't Piano Night with Eddie Bo (we miss you!) but it was Old Home Week and a good guy's birthday. Hope it was happy, Mr. Gil!!!!
April 28, 2012...
Hit the Fest albeit late, caught the New Orleans BINGO Show & Tom Petty (my aims), but also, Jewel Brown, a true gem, with her fantastic band. Finally found some decent beer, & hit La Divina Geleteria's Chocolate Azteca (my ancestors!)--the additions of hot pepper & cinnamon--great stuff for a hot day.
Record crowds & if I hear another local say, "I miss the $8 price & not as many people" I'll .... (fill in the blank).
April 27, 2012...
First day of Jazz Fest (the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival held at the racetrack) and it's more than just Spring in the air! The pilgrims arriving to worship at the Temple of Athena where wisdom, music, food & fun mix in the sun where a few weeks earlier held highly-trained, beautiful horses, gamblers and drinkers.
We played my boss' Annual After-The-First-Day-of-the-Fest Crawfish Boil a few blocks from the Fairgrounds out there in Mid-City.
Lotsa fun folks & great food. Last year they replaced some pine trees with a saltwater pool & an outdoor fireplace. Lap O'Luxury!
April 26, 2012...
Kelly McGrath & wife Regina from Houston arrived to attend the first weekend of JazzFest. A colleague of my former bossat Enron so I call him "Uncle Boss" and a friend--when we evacuated to Houston post-Katrina he gave us money, the use of his car and cell-phone! More like a Fairy GodFather.
Alas, they bought tickets for the 2nd weekend, but forgot they have to attend a wedding, so bestowed said tix on Mr. M. & I!!!! Free tix to JazzFest for all three days!!! Fairy GodFather of all Fairy GodFathers!!
Took them to a fave dinner spot & then to hear some great music courtesy of Jeremy Davenport at the Davenport Lounge, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Canal Street, USA.
Times-Picayune Music Critic's Keith Spera's book, Groove Interrupted just came out in paperback so he was there signing copies & they read from it--Keith played Kermit Ruffins & JD, himself. 'Twas a great way to inaugurate the Fest with some great folks!

Visited two Tall Ships at the Bienville Street wharf in the French Quarter, part of the three-year national commemoration of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner. A celebration of the "brotherhood of the sea and of our freedoms," its co-nickname is "Our flag is still there." (see pix to the right and in Special Events)
The BAE Guayas is the training ship of the Ecuadoran Navy. She is a three-masted barque, 78m (257′) in length with a crew of 35 officers and 120 sailors launched in 1976.

The barquetine Indonesian ship KRI Dewaruci was probably the more fascinating of the two we climbed aboard due to all the carved wood and the friendly sailors. Construction began in Germany in 1932, but not completed until 1952, because of World War II. The ship is a training vessel and "goodwill ambassador" of the Indonesian Navy and seemed to be doing an expert job. The Dewaruci (named after the Indonesian god of truth and courage) is also known for its colorful crew and marching band. M. bought a pin for his cap and talked about surfing to some of the crew. A delightful afternoon.
April 20, 2012...
Played our monthly gig at the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse. WWOZ dj Bill deTurke and his lovely wife & amour, Amie, came with some friends. Really made me nervous, but I love hanging out with them 'cause of their fun-loving, good-natures. We play out in the ultra-thin courtyard where we can pop into Swirl for some alco-grape. Thanks, Wade for a great space!
April19, 2012...
My band's 25th Anniversary and we're playing a gig tomorrow--life's pretty good especially with Spring firmly planted (pun intended).
Here's my bike ride to my "Day Job." (see photos to right, yeah, you right!)
April15, 2012...
Saw Tricia Boutte (affectionately known as "Sista Teedy") play yesterday and finished out the FQF with The New Orleans Bingo Show last evening on Jackson Square.
SoMs. Boutte (John's niece)moved to Norway & Clint Maedgen moved back from California!
At least we get to catch them between their comings/goings--and super-spectacular it was. Weather cooperated and I had $$ for Abita Purple Hazes! (So glad they all came to their senses about beer choices...)
April14, 2012...
Yesterday the French Quarter Fest was rollickin & I got to leave work early to catch Irene Sage's Tribute to Coco Robichaux.
She is terrific !!!!!! What more can I say?
Hearing Mike Hood sing Coco's Cottonmouth was cool& I got to hang with some old Checkpoint Charlie buddies from back in My Day--when I met Coco & His Gang. Saw Coco's widow, Danielle who had brought some of his ashes--they did that song about him wanting to go in the Mississippi & they may have done that later, but I went looking for more fun... didn't find it until I got home & my cat Pixie greeted me!!

No, wait here she is greeting me:

April11, 2012...
The Historic New Orleans Collection published Ben Samdal's Ernie K-Doe biography & they had a book release party with interview of author, slide show of photos & a special appearance by Allen Toussaint himself. Of course, in attendance was that wacky wax figure of Mr. K-Doe that his wife Antoinette used to carry around to every event...I guess he really is still here! Used to love listening to him on WWOZ--classic! What a talent, what a guy! Loved seeing Mr. Toussaint-wow, renders me speechless...if you can believe it!
April 5, 2012...
Last night, Guillermo at Canal Street Bistro had a party inaugurating his new dinner hours. Turns out our former barkeep at the Tricou House on Bourbon Street runs the front of the house there & we got to catch up. I often wondered what happened to him and his gal, Pam, who used to waitress at what we used to call the "Tricoocoo" House. What a place! Ran into the guy who made that dynamite habanero blood mary mix at my next door neighbor's party last Thoth Parade. Been dreamin about that stuff ever since and I got to tell him.
Sidney Smith, Haunted History Tour owner & operator treated a bunch of us to birthday dinner at Clancy's for his son, Justin, 31 years old! Food was excellent--and the company was entertaining--Chuck Ferguson and Jimmy Fagan were there! What else is there to say except the margaritas were Straight Up!!
Later, M. did the door at Le Bon Temps Rouler and Clarke Peters showed up in a limo! Cool. He said he remembered me from the benie--I was so nervous when I introduced myself to him that I called him Wendell Pierce! He goes, "No, I'm the other guy." So gracious!
April 1, 2012...
This is no April Fool joke: I got to "hang" with Celebrities Wendell Pierce, Clarke Peters, David Morse and Michiel Huisman from HBO's Treme show last night at the "My Dahlin' New Orleans Benefit." (Melissa Leo and the woman who plays Annie was in attendance, but I did not see them.)
Benefiting the Musician's Clinic, Road Home & Roots of Music, this gala once again featured the aforementioned hobknobbing, music BY IRMA THOMAS, food from celebrity chef's Susan Spicer andMcPhail (among others), lots of libations and auction items. (I did not win a date with either Rob Brown or Wendell Pierce...drat!)
Glen Campbell bought my guy a ticket (THANKS AGAIN, KID!) so I had anescort, and we met some great (new and old) friends: Percy Williams, Irma Thomas' trumpet player, Lil' Freddie King (who also played that night), Catherine Lasperches (of the Musician's Clinic & also was in an episode or two & her guy Michael), Wendy, Ruthie & Laney.
The Mardi Gras Indian group, The Guardians of the Flame, blessed the crowd as we arrived on the red carpet and it must have worked because throughout the nightImanaged to havea big time-- such a big time that a very kind couple picked me up from the bus stop on Magazine Street and gave me a ride to my door afterwards...
[Please see separate category, "Past Special Events" for more photos.]
THANK YOU, KIND STRANGERS! I really needed that whoever you are!!! I remember something about The American Sector restaurant, so bless you in all of your culinary and otherwise endeavors!
March 31, 2012...
Played at the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse last night and I've been feeling hugged all day. What a blast! Missed Pat, but I reckon we danced for her!
Neighbors Kendall & Company (thanks, Scott for shakin the maracas & Nate for including us in the pantheon of your Great-Grandmother's dying words).
Johnny Bee brought celebrities Dan, Tom McDermott & Evan Christopher along; and an old pal from Houston,Walker, who's in town working for Naylor & Jenny (the Stones, who also brought their kids--Walker!!! WE WERE AT THEIR WEDDING at the Louise McGeehee School--EDDIE BO PLAYED! back in '95 was it?)showed up with the Stones and twins Joel & John.
Drummer Adrian & Guitarist Mark & I had the biggest time ever with the tallest choco cake Linda baked for Pat.
M.--thanks for helping out--you are a Gem. Love you dearly!
And all of y'all!!! We'll be playing there every third Friday so put it on your calendar!
March 26, 2012...
Went on The Tennessee Williams Walking Tour--still part of the Festival. Got to see some of the places he lived (alot of them have plaques), but in my French Quarter wanderings had not seen them all.
The tour guide had some good quotes from the author and made me want to read his "Memoirs" written in 1975.
I realized that he died (February 25, 1983) a few days before my first visit to New Orleans (and two days after Mardi Gras).
March 25, 2012...
The Tennessee Williams Festival (celebrating the writer every year on his March 26, 1911 birthday weekend) put on an evening of reading (called "Hiding in Plain Sight") of some of his lesser-known work at the Monteleone Hotel last night. Last year was his 100th birthday and there was cake and John Waters at Le Petit Theatre, but this one just had John Guare, Piper Laurie, Amy Dickinson, and Christine McMurdo-Wallis, among others, all excellent.
Afterwards, I savored a gin and tonic at the Carousel Bar. I think TW would have liked it that way.
March 23, 2012...
Saw the play "Streetcar Named Desire" put on by Southern Repetory Theatre last night. I arrived an hour early to get on the waiting list since they were sold out. Igot in!Southern Rep. had to leave their digs at Canal Place and how serendipitous to produce this play a block away from where it supposedly took place.
The New Orleans artist Michoulopolus loaned his studio on Elysian Fields and a better place could not have been found: huge old wooden factory of some sort. Met a nice couple from Silver Spring, MD (my old stompin grounds when I lived in Takoma Park) who have been coming for the many Tennessee Williams Festival activities for years. (It was funny because I had googled Dumbarton Oaks in D.C. that afternoon remembering a visit there.)
My friend Donald Lewis had a bit part and just about stole the show as did the intermittent rainshowers which added to the thunder clap of their sound effects!
Nice work, Mother Nature, Southern Rep & Tennessee Williams!
March 21, 2012...
Got the news today that Head Couch Sean Payton was suspended for turning his head on the bounty on opposing players...well, at least the city didn't burn down like it did on this day back in 1788, but I guess for some people, it might as well have...
March 20, 2012...
St. Joseph's Day was Exceptional!
St. Louis Cathedral held mass & their altar was on view at St. Mary's Church at the Ursulines Convent. Lovely!
They served a delicious lunch out in the former Convent's backyard. Under a blooming & fruiting lime tree, I ate pasta sprinkled with breadcrumbs (for St. Joseph's carpenter sawdust), artichokes fixed a few different ways, salad, bread, shrimp & cake!
Saw the famed French Quarter writers, Phil Lamancusa and Debbie Lindsey out enjoying the Feast.
Got my Italian cookies, lucky fava bean, St. Joseph's candle & card for my own altar.
from Wikipedia:
United States of America
"In New Orleans, Louisiana, which was a major port of entry for Sicilian immigrants during the late 19th century, the Feast of St. Joseph is a city-wide event. Both public and private St. Joseph's altars are traditionally built. The altars are usually open to any visitor who wishes to pay homage. The food is generally distributed to charity after the altar is dismantled.
There are also parades in honor of St. Joseph and the Italian population of New Orleans
In addition to the above traditions, some groups of Mardi Gras Indians stage their last procession of the season on the Sunday nearest to St. Joseph's Day otherwise known as "Super Sunday," after which their costumes are dismantled."
That night I dreamed it was Christmas and everyone was walking the streets in happy fashion; I could see folks ice-skating & doing tricks on the ice.
March 19, 2012...
Happy St. Joseph's Day!
New Orleans' close ties to our Sicilian heritage makes today a special one to our Citizens.
St. Joseph is the patron Saint of workers, so we can all i.d. with that. If you are looking for employment or a better job, go to the Master Carpenter's Dad for some extra "umph."
Extra-umph this weekend was provided by on Friday night: The Historic New Orleans Collection's Concerts in the Courtyard which featured Dr. Michael White Quartet (see pic to the right) and NOLA Brewing. Unbeatable combos!
Saturday, St. Patrick and the Irish Channel Parade, and on Sunday, the Mardi Gras Indians for Super Sunday.
After a Super Beauty weekend like that, last night I dreamed it was Mardi Gras again & I was thinking, "seemed like only yesterday" but oh, well, I had a better costume this timearound.
March 5, 2012...
Saw John Sinclair perform at the Louisiana Music Factory on Saturday. Google this guy & not only his poetry will move you, but also his life story--(and that's only up til now!) Great to see you around town, John!
February 25, 2012...
Louisiana Music Factory's 20th Anniversary--Barry & Jerry's baby is just about drinking age.Down on Decatur--serving up local fare for a while now, well, 20 years! Kermit andJohn Boutte started it off, and the celebration continued through the afternoon to a packed house with John Sinclair as m.c. (just like in the "old days"--my album came out in '02 & he m.c.ed our show). $2 Abita Ambers down the street with a coupon--lotsa folks turned out--always great to see the great sometimes-Friday D.J. Bill de Turke and his lovely Amour & wife, Amy. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARRY & All the Gang at the local clubhouse! Thanks for your support and LOVE!!!!!!!
February 22, 2012...
Ash Wednesday. Here we are. Stateside once again.
An otherwise perfectly serene & wonderful Carnival was marred by police misbehavior: three 25-year olds that I know were taken up to "justice" in three separate incidents involving crossing the street, petting a horse & otherwise being in the wrong place at the wrong time. (These are especially nice folks, too.)
Other than that, the weather yesterday was superb and warm--no rain. On a day when we are all important and special--a day when we are all One & all happy--started out at our pal's groovy Marigny pad where piano music by the fab Tom McDermott entertained us--dressed as "Gorilla-ina." (see pix to the right & more under "Mardi Gras" Section)
Rode bikes to the Origin of the Society of St. Anne Parade which has really grown in size from its beginnings. Lots more marching troupes, too, with larger wheeled contraptions--such as a Trojan Horse 2-stories tall. Reminded me of the Bourbon Street Costume Awards when we were in a crush & I had to turn around. When Marie Antonette's rolling guillotine on a Workman's bicycle like M.'s stopped to talk to him, the beautiful Marie let me eat King Cake. (Thank you & sorry about your head.)
Played an anthropologist watching the Mardi Gras Indians (Guardians of the Flame!)(see photo to right)and the Skull'n'Bones Gang (Hail Sun Pie!)(see photo to right): traditions kept faithfully.
Ran into poet John Sinclair (see photo to right) and his daughter, Celia in front of the Backstreet Cultural Museum.
On the way back to the Quarter saw Pete Fountain's Half-Fast Walking Club (which is also much larger than my 1st encounter 30 years ago),and at Checkpoint Charlie's had a Purple Haze where we ran into some more pals: The Coulstons wearing real nutrias as head-dresses; former Trips guitarist T-Bone Stone (now Happy Monsters not the La-Z Boys anymore) bartending; Ronnie & wife Wendy from church, struttin their stuff down Decatur; and bassist Josh getting ready to play a gig.
Went home before it got dark & watched some New Orleans culture on T.V.: Zulu & Rex parades, the meeting of the Rex & Comus courts--great day all around, great Season.
May the New Orleans Police Department, now that they have made a pact with the Mardi Gras Indians, keep a pact with the rest of we Citizens here and protect and serve us.
When I went for ashes at St. Louis Cathedral at lunchtime, the Priest asked for prayers and fasting (one day per week) for the murder, violence & rascism to cease. (Felt close to home after hearing of the frightening Mardi Gras police abuse...)
My ashes ended up looking like someone tried to put out a cigarette in my eye & missed...Fittingly.
February 18, 2012
Happy Lundi Gras, Everyone! Everywhere else it's President's Day, today is the Pre-MG excitement build-up. And now even more since Tucks got postponed 'til this afternoon due to inclement weather on Saturday (translation: monsoon).
Yesterday, NOMTOC ran at 9:00 a.m.--I don't even go to Church that early! But since I am now worshipping at the alter of Mardi Gras Madness, I went--krewes of Iris, Okeanos, Mid-City & Thoth. Then last night was the super-parade Bacchus. Whoa!
I missed Endymion except on T.V. since it was cold & rainy, so it was cool to see these gigantic floats w/100 riders on each! Baccha-gator, etc.!!!
My neighbor's nephew & pal drove from St. Louis & joined in the festivities--a rider poured some alco-bev in Nate's mouth and then Nate pulled a jug of Northern Lights whiskey out of his duffle bag, the rider through down his plastic bottle for N. to fill up and passed it back to him. (And all we did was pass a can of beer for a spear.) It's nice to see people taking part so thoroughly and completely.
Out next-door neighbors opened up their Garden District manse for a party & we were treated to some home-made habanero pepper bloody mary mix that got the endorphins going. Thanks, Patrick, Troy & Rich!
Today I stopped by Ace hardware to make another key for my bike lock & I ran into "you're that guy from T.V."!!! I said to Michaela Huseman from the Treme. Pretty cool MG moment: told him I enjoyed his playing at "My Dahlin New Orleans Benefit" especially since he played a Dr. John song w/Dr. John in the audience. He was nice as can be & good-lookin', Ladies!
February 18, 2012...
Enjoying a whole pelt of a dog at Le Bon Ton Rouler, M.'s hang-out, waiting for the rain to subside. Parades got postponed but not the MG Spirit! My past MG's involved this bar before it became a college kid party pad. (When the sign "No Scavenging" was for real.)
Thursday night's trio of parades featured the popular Muses parade. Our friend, Lyndia, performed with The Pussyfooters and we saw Patricia Clarkson on the big shoe float. Babylon & Chaos (w/former Momus riders) also paraded with tons of marching bands and clubs. The weather was superb and so was the company. Happy Mardi Gras!
Some of us got arrested for crossing the street & spent the night in jail and some of us just enjoyed a hangover and commiserated in the elevator at work. My boss brought a King Cake from C.C.'s that was buttery-delicious and our building gave out seven different types of cakes including strawberry creamcheese.
Last night was one of my faves, Hermes, designed by Henri Schlinder and built by the Blaine Kern folks: beautiful! Followed by Krewe D'Etat--a former boss who threw me an unopened bag of blinky skeletons. Heard Sunpie Barnes on the radio this a.m. talking about the Skull & Bones crew hitting the Treme early on MG morning.
Lotsa drunk young folk made me wonder if I was like that at my first (continuous) 30 years ago.
February 16, 2012...
Parade season began in earnest last night and we didn't even mind the rain because the temp was in the upper60s. Druids and the new female krewe of Nyx followed. A former boss (and current friend) rode in Druids and threw me a spear and some glass beads. Niiice. Mailed me a sword swallower medallion. Thanks!
Nyx (Goddess of night) paraders were very generous and St. Augustine was among their marching bands.Since Muses throws shoes, they threw purses. Accessorize! They have their own Nyx Hot Sauce float. Kudos for their first time out!
February 13, 2012...
Hit several parades over the weekend!Mardi Gras is here! Friday afternoon was the Krewe of Cork, a merry band of folks dedicated to wine drinking, an honorable pursuit, methinks. They lunch at the Court of Two Sisters and parade through the French Quarter. Everyone waits outside for their promenade and this was the first time it poured rain. Did not dampen these folks' spirits, nor ours.
We make sure to see our friends from church, Tony & Donna, every year. This year they were dressed as convicts and our other church friend, the famous photographer, Carl, from the subkrewe "Winestone Cowboys" (get it?), gave us his broken spur: "You may need this later," he slurred. What a hoot! Thanks, y'all!!!
That evening, Oshun presented the first night parade of the Season. Lovely costumes--this parade has really grown over the years.
Saturday afternoon was Pontchartrain and that night, Sparta and Pygmalion. All good despite the drop in temp. Pygmalion has an impressive new signature float, "Pygmammoth"--a gigantic wooly mammoth with glowing eyes that was something to behold. M.'s old pal from the Hideout days, Mark, who is our neighbor hung out with us & his new gal, Tracy.
Church was scheduled an hour early in order to avoid parade madness. Ha! We biked down to Fat Harry's at the corner of Napoleon & St. Charles--which is now smoke-free--not the corner, the corner-bar. Amazing. Also, Superior Seafood is open, in the newly-remodeled, former Copeland's there right on the corner. They did a bang-up job on making it look classic--the food's good & we enjoyed a couple of Stella Artois on tap waiting for the parade action.
Carrollton & King Arthur parades did not disappoint and the afternoon waswell-spent listening to the marching bands, catching throws & enjoying some sunshine. Afterwards, we caught up with the Lyons marching club at the Milan bar where Gary, a Trips drummer at one time, was playing with a band that included the famed J. Monque d' of his own blues band. The Pussyfooters were performing behind and we joined in with the paraders, biking up Napoleon Avenue to Mrs. Mae's where we left them tocollapse at home, happily.
February 4, 2012...
The fabuloso Krewe du Vieux followed by Krewe delusion delighted all with their zany antics, costumes & floats. See if you can check them out on line, but this is one parade that must be felt in person.
January 16, 2012...
Got my Tour Guide license from the City of New Orleans last Summer at the same time I started a new job so I did not pursue. Sidney Smith & Kelila, Haunted History Tour owners were gracious enough to allow me to tag along and train with their guides. Their Ghost Tour scared me silly & I realized I would be more interested in exorcising those poor creatures than telling their stories over and over. The first tour guide's spiel was so gory I almost threw up; I'd be more interested in giving a "Louis Armstrong slept here" tour (which is mostly parking lots in the CBD now unfortunately) after having just recently read his first autobiography (makes a great Christmas gift--I got mine from my drummer, Adrian--thanks alot!).
January 6, 2012...
12th Night, Epiphany, King's Day, Mark & Pat's Anniversary, My Mother's Birthday
Merriment reigned as the Phunny Phorty Phellows took to the street and streetcar (google these guys--they're a gas). We got to start the Mardi Gras season by watching these costumed characters gather, drink champagne, eat King Cake, cut the ribbon to Mardi Gras, board the streetcar and ride out!
The Willow St. streetcar barn is perfectly positioned to score Purple Haze (on tap) beers from Carrollton Station which I did after the streetcar left. Saw Hubie, famous musician & funster w/his gal, Sharon & their neighbor.
The Krewe of O.A.K. was marching w/a brass band so we followed along to the Maple Leaf where we sang and danced & during the song, "When you laugh the world laughs with you..." I melted/merged with my fellow merrymakers and slid happily & deelightedly into the Carnival Season. M. & I ended the evening with oyster stew & an oyster loaf at Casamento's.
Ahhh, the Life!
December 30, 2011...
Played for Linda & Malcolm Burns' 50th wedding anniversary at Terry & Sally's house in Mid-City. OMG! This was the party to end all parties-perfect for the 2011 year-end celebration. Their house had a great dance floor & these folks were hoppin! Even the grandkids were fun--playing percussion with the band--this was the most stellar event I've ever been to, much less played. The Burns' kids and friends are all happy, prosperous fun-loving & friendly. My kinda people!!!
Thank you formaking my New Year so bright, ya'll!
December 23, 2011...
Office holiday luncheon at Mr. B's Bistro where they had $1.50 martooti's Monday-Friday... niice. Our waiter turned out to be my friend Bubbles who was outstanding as was the food. Yum! Thanks, Rocky! Great to hang with y'all!
That night, M. & I took advantage of the Papa Noel rates & took a spot at the Chateau Hotel -- historic building, pool, courtyard & The Three Stooges marathon on Saturday morning. Stopped off at the Hermes bar at Antoine's restaurant where the bartendress, Stephanie, was having a birthday. That night, Santa came. Cool yule!
December 18, 2011...
That evening the folks living at the Mouro Castel building in the French Quarter had us play their Christmas party--another courtyard pool gig-- very nice--Santa showed up, too. Told him I was good, but he wasn't having any of it. Beautiful building with some nice people.
They had heard us down the block at Bill & June's anniversary party & wanted to get some of that. Very flattering--we were treated well--thank you, Harris!
Afterwards, made a beeline for Jackson Square for caroling. It was packed & I went for a bev at Tony Seville's cozy Pirate bar in Pirate's Alley, but when I returned it was still packed. Finally squished in, ran into a former neighbor and we really bellowed it out! Lots of good cheer & whatnot.
December 12, 2011...
Coco's 2nd line started in front of the Apple Barrel. Dancing Man504 was the Grand Marshall & Jane Brown helped herd the gigantic crowd. James Andrews led the Treme Brass Band first into Washington Park and then down Royal St. to Decatur. I finally saw Danielle, Coco's wife & she was making sure that Coco went on to the White Light (or however it is described). When we were all filing into the House of Blues I saw Clarke Peters from the Treme show recording it all. When we went into the big room to listen to Coco's band play his songs, I suddenly realized how empty the stage was--Coco was not there.
The Rev. G.O.A.T. Carson introduced the band--Irene Sage tore it upsinging his"Walk-with-the-Spirit" song--Tremendous voice! He used to always introduce her as Queen Irene--that's for sure.
Mike Hood impressed me with his rendition of Coco's "Cottonmouth."
Love you, Coco! Here & There.
December 11, 2011...
A Garden District Christmas concert was presented at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church around the corner. The fabulous soprano Phyllis Treigle blew out the rafters with Cantique de Noel.
Why the Archdiocese won't let these people back in their Church is beyond me. It's such a beautiful place; they allowed the Charismatics to move from the Rampart St. former-nunnery building so maybe something good will come of that.
Checkpoint Charlie's hosted a Benefit for Kenny Holliday's widow, Deannaand their daughter who I got to see before I left that night. I used to see Kenny & Coco play Sunday nights at the Dragon's Den & I can imagine that seeing a comrade ail can take a toll on one.
Deanna was the bartendress there at the time & she & Kenny made a great couple.
The Benefit featured art work and musical performances. I came late and saw only the Honey Island Swamp Band and an acoustic number by Mike Darby and Carey B, but I heard there was a stellar line-up. Bless you, Kenny! You and Coco are singingthe "2-for-1 Sake" song as we speak (or read)!
December 10, 2011...
Preservation Resource Center's Holiday Home Tour.
We got to play the Swankienda on Seventh Street, just off St. Charles in the pool area. Fab pad, nice folks, too! The tour allows regular people to see how the other half lives.
We got free tix for playing and when I toured a pad on Prytania, I got bit by an emu these people had hatched from an egg. Pretty good watch bird if you ask me.
I like seeing the inside of these historic buildings. Some are less-messed with than others, thankfully. A particular courtyard on Camp Street made me take a million pictures (see Past Special Events for more HG photos). I get a kick out of seeing a hearth from 1844 still alive & well.
December 3, 2011...
Coco Robicheaux' Memorial Service. Please see Coco's own Page. We love & miss you, My Friend, O Great and Wise One!!!
December 1, 2011...
Ellis Marsalas played a "Christmas New Orleans Style" concert at the St. Louis Cathedral! Wow! Ear-popping deliciousness. I saw the jaw drop off the St. Michael statute during the We Three Kings song. This show made for a very cool yule.
November 24, 2011...
Thanksgiving Day @ the Fair Grounds! Gorgeous weather & pretty good luck (not having to stand in long lines for an alco bev). I scored big on a horse that looked lively and one named after my 6th grade crush. Saw a buncha fun folks and took some pix I'll upload soon (or is it download?)
November 19, 2011...
Diane's birthday party--another courtyard, not by a pool, but a club in the Quarter. Diane's a buggy driver and a real Quarter-ite--had some friends get up & sit in with us. I liked seeing the people across the way watching from their balcony steps. Happiest, Sweetie and thanks for having us!
November 16, 2011...
My friend Lee came with her husband Pat from Kansas City, attending a conference & we met at her hotel bar, Loews' Swizzle Stick Lounge. Took in historic sights. Don't see them for 10 years & then see them twice in two months. They look pretty much the same which I find astonishing.
November 12, 2011...
My friends, June & Bill had us play for their anniversary again: in their French Quarter courtyard by the pool--(formerly the Italian American Hall on Esplanade). Lots of family from out of town diggin' the scene--took a carriage ride like five years ago--for their 20th!!! Thanks a bunch! Love you!
November 10, 2011...
Preservation Resource Center sponsored the Central City Home Tour Patron Party at Captain Leather's home on Carondelet St. between St. Andrew & Josephine Street. I wasn't going to miss this as I've wanted to see the inside of this house since I moved to town!
Col. Leathers was Captain of the steamboat Natchez--featured in the famous 1870 race with the Robt. E. Lee. Leathers lost because he refused to strip his boat down or limit passengers.
The open house and tour the next day was part of the push by the Faubourg Lafayette Neighborhood Association to market this part of town for renovation and move-in readies.
The tour included the Divine Yoga Studios' Henry Howard beauty on Baronne Street, and another nice home owned by Kermit Ruffins' keyboard player & wife whom I hadn't seen in a few years.
November 3, 2011...
We played Ladyfest (promoting female players) at Maison on Frenchmen Street. Hadn't played a club since Mark had health issues three years ago. This place was happening and we played after Sweet Jones, Matt & Melissa's band. Saw my former drummer, James Clark--what a gem of a guy.
Exciting to play a club atmosphere & I hope we get a regular gig in one of these smoke-frees soon.

Our 4th year in a row playing Voodoo on the Bayou Halloween party at the Pitot House. Those nice folks at Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association hired us again! Thanks, Rocky!!! My drummer dressed up as me--what a hoot that guy is, Adrian Piano. Stellar playing by The Trips!! Thank you,Trips Guitarist, Mark Fowler!! Great weather outside.
October 19, 2011...
Thanks in large part to my lawyer bosses, I was able to work a steady job since the Summer and got to attend my nephew's wedding in California.
This was a great trip on many levels, of course, the fact that it was the Bay area, but also my sister, Sheryl had lived out there in "The Day" and I had gone to visit her as a kid.
Her son, Jay got hitched (see pix to the right) & she (Sis Sheryl) & I first met up at the San Remo Hotel in North Beach. I highly recommend this place unless you are squeamish about sharing a bathroom, which are kept immaculately clean. We got a sink in the room which was $10 extra, but since $75.00 was the base rate for 2 single beds, we thought that was alright for S.F. and especially the location. The hotel is an historic building and the clientele is spectacularly nice. You'll love it!
Sheryl indulged me by going shopping in Chinatown & Union Square and then we bee-lined it to the Palace Hotel where I took a free tour of the building. You may or may not remember this art-deco Beaux-arts palace as having the Maxfield Parrish painting, "The Pied Piper" in their pub which sports a tasty beer named after. (I found out about this place when I was visiting BaseBuddy Johnny C. several years ago & he took me to lunch here.)
The Nestles or Hershey Bunny was tooling Market Street in a pink cadillac and gave us some free milk. Wow!
Took the cable car (I was scared) to Fisherman's Wharf & saw the Mechanical Museum with all these madcap coin-ops from "The Day." Ate a great meal and I wandered up to the SF art school which looked like a monastery with that big old bell tower.
Next morning had cap again & Italian pastry at nearby coffeehouse. Beautiful. Took cruise up to Coit Tower to dig the view then a last trip to the Trader Joe's on the corner before picking up rental car and heading to Livermore, California (found out a quake occurred which I did not feel).
I white-knuckled across that Oakland-Bay Bridge which my grandfather had worked on back in "The Day." (see how many Days there are?)
The wine country is absolutely fab and there is more spots than just Sonoma or Napa. Drinking wine is fun and educational! I went to the Wendt winery in Livermore & learned alot !!!! Whew!
Jay (Sheryl's son) & Jessica had their wedding outside at the Livermore winery. It couldn't have been nicer out there on the lawn watching them. One of Jay's friends from High School in New Hampshire, Josh was there with his wife & reminded me of the year 2001 when while performing at a Bourbon St. club, he and his brother, who were living in New Orleans, came to party with us! Those were fond memories once I remembered them! (If y'all have any stories, please send them in! And thanks!)
The next day I drove to Yosemite National Park since I couldn't reach my cousin whom I hadn't since since I was 15 years old. What a great place. I stayed just outside the park's boundaries and smelled that great Mountain air. This a definite summer destination to escape from the New Orleans heat.
I spent my last night at my "Base Buddy's" (our Father's were stationed at several AFBs together) pad in Redwood City, where he & his wife Diana, their dog Inky & cat Tinkerbell gave me the royal treatment. (This is the aforementioned gentlemen, Johnny who took me to the Pied Piper pub years before.)
They took me to the Nature Preserve on the coast and saw the seals swimming and waving to us, all sorts of coral formations & cliffs above. The fog rolled in as a separate entity, not blending in with the air, but with a distinct line. (I've got to get these pix on here...)
The restaurant was most excellent with a great view of the surf at Half Moon Bay. Thank you guys so much! Even now, California Dreamin'.

Airplaned it to the Kansas City area to attend my High School reunion! What a blast! First, took a Retreat to Unity Village to dig the scene: Saw double-digit deer sitings while hiking their nature preserve. Nice. Got to visit the Archives & saw my Minister's photo on the wall when she was ordained there in '50.
Then, I stayed at a Sheraton out where dirt roads and farm fields used to be in suburban Overland Park, Kansas. I always laugh when people ask me, "Where'd you learn to drive?" (There was never any traffic out there in Driver's Ed class and I am still not used to traffic.) The traffic was wicked driving from the rental car company and fortunately all they had was one of those huge pick-up trucks which made me feel a bit safer...I got a sweet deal at the Sheraton--I paid the year I was born (minus the 19-).
They let us tool around the old school & I got to reminisce: went to the Little Theater (pic to the right) where I had bonded with some "fellow freaks" back in the day. Tried to conjure them up that afternoon by reciting my Drama Class monolog from Shakespeare's Kiss Me Kate--right now all I can think of is "Twas brillig and the slithy toves..." Oh, wait, here it is, "Unknit they threatening unkind brow & dart not scornful glances..." Wow, I've got a lot stuff stuck up there, huh? Whew.
Saw them later that night at the ReOnion & we caught up. A lot of the folks I know/have kept up with are still all young at heart and happy and really look great. Saw my 6th grade "crush" who has become quite the Botanist.
Stayed at Lee, my 7th grade girlfriend's house & her hub Pat's (they were high school sweethearts). Their neighborhood had a Halloween Party for the kids, & Lee & I played witches in the Haunted House (a tent in the backyard). We had lots of weird props & flashlights--we were a little too good at it & I felt terrible when we made a kid cry...
The summer Lee & Pat & I graduated HS we drove out to San Francisco in Pat's Rambler to visit my sister--had to take the Greyhound home 'cause the car was weeping oil. Quite the Adventure when we got off the bus at a non-stop & were left behind in rural Wyoming.
Great to see everyone and re-connect. My locker partner remembered me & it made me teary-eyed when she gave me a big ole hug...(see pic to the right)

Slewfoot's Memorial Service. Our friend and fellow musician, Mickey passed away in his home. He had been sick and tired. I think he was just done with it all. I know he's having better times now!
Father Terry at St. Anna's did a fantastic job of organizing and serving at the church on Esplanade that night. We all watched as he poured Slew's ashes into the ground there, followed by the Treme Brass Band SecondLIne Jazz Funeral to the Apple Barrel.
I first met Slewfoot before I moved here. My drummer at the time, Augie Augustine, also played w/The Slewfoot Blues Band Sunday nights at Margaritaville's Storyville Tavern, and when we didn't have to hightail it back home to Houston, we would attend his shows there.
Then more recently, he & Cary B. played with me, or I played with them. Either way, talented & dedicated, it was fun being with them. You are sorely missed, Mr. Slew!
April 13, 2011...
We had a blast playing for the college students for "Carnival Night" at Loyola Univ. Dining Hall during the supper hour (our first Supper Club). The students were great fun to play for and we got to observe their (and our young drummer, a recent UNO graduate, Adrian's) eating habits! They seem to prefer avariety of items piled high on one plate.Thank you, Michael!!!!

French Quarter Fest! Got an e-mail from my ex-next door neighbor in Houston, Jason! He used to be a social worker there (not for me specifically, for the homeless folks). We shared a back patio whichheld a swimming pool two feet from our sliding glass doors. Pool Parties! One time after a party, we decided to go bowling. Jason had a bowling bag and we took out the ball and filled it with cans of Buds--that's what they sold there at the bowling alley, so we figured we wouldn't be inconspicuous. Riiiight!
He's since moved, married, babied, but is still a stellar partier! We saw Charmaine Neville's dyn-o-mite show which included several family members (including her son Damian rapping, niiice), then saw the view from Galvez (formerly the Bella Luna).
His wife arrived from Lubbock (that's where they live now) and we met up at my groovy gig at Barnes & Noble bookstore in Metairie, then went to the French Quarter for some food and more fun. Took the Haunted History Tour--thanks Sydney! w/Rene, my favorite tour guide. Afterwards, took them to a stop at the spot of the Quadroon Balls...supposedly a very haunted hotel...Bourbon Orleans by the Cathedral.

Tennessee Williams' 100th Birthday Celebration at Le Petit Theatre. This was an astounding event hosted by the fabulous Peggy Scott Laborde. Williams' words spoken by poets, actors & ending up with John Waters was truly an amazing experience. Movie stars Shirley Knight from "Sweet Bird of Youth" and Carroll Baker from "Baby Doll" (among others) read and recited poems, parts from plays, and letters written to and from Williams.
The night ended with champagne and cake in the courtyard for one of New Orleans' most celebrated former residents. Thank you, Tennessee Williams Festival and great to see you Earl Perry, the Official Fest Photographer! (see pix in Special Events section, recently unearthed from the Archives)
March 22, 2011...
The Williams Research Center showed the 1981 Eric Paulsen interview with Tennessee Williamsfor the Festival. Playwright extraordinaire, I was more interested in him when I heard that he (as I), call(ed) New Orleans his "spiritual home."
The interview took place on a French Quarter balcony and even at this later stage of his life was quite charming and I was also struck by his accessibility. Paulsen at the time a young journalism student, told of going to Williams' home to be greeted by a bathrobe-wearing famous writer! (years later when I ran into Mr. Paulsen at the Farmers' Market, he said TW hit on him)
March 20, 2011...
Super Sunday! The Mardi Gras Indians gather and parade the Sunday after St. Joseph's Day. We rode bikes up Washington Avenue to the park andwere in feather heaven! Rev. Goat Carson was blessing the gathering and it seemed to work--great weather & photo opps galore! (see photo to the right).I ran into my ex-neighbor and friend, Jen, visiting from San Fran--miss you, My Friend!
March 19, 2011...
St. Joseph's Day--Jesus' Dad is a celebrated Saint here as the Italian population brought over the tradition of setting up altars to honor his continued assistance in human endeavors. Many churches and private homes open up their doors to showoff the bakedbread in the shape of crabs, lobsters & sandals; cakes in the shape of Bibles; candles, cookies, fava beans, etc. I ate a delicious meal at St. Stephen given by the members. Thank you, St. Joe!
March 16, 2011...
I applied to become a New Orleans Tour Guide today. Didn't realize I would be taking a (pee) drug test, but good thing I've been a good girl.
That night went to a "Keeper of the Flame" benefit promoting Harrison's new movie about Mardi Gras Indians starring Albert Doucette among others. The cast was there and we saw a trailer of the movie to be out soon. Looking forward to it. The International House hosted the event and displayed a St. Joseph's alter--lovely. Thanks for the invite, Stacy!
March 12, 2011...
Not enough parades yet! The Irish Channel St. Patrick's Parade marches down Louisiana Avenue one-half block from our house, so we had to go! This thing has really grown since I used to live on the parade route in 1998! Not as many cabbages thrown, and not enough onions. Caught some Irish Spring soap and Moon Pies and my friend Patti handed me a nicely gift-wrapped package that contained a Miller Lite beer! Interesting! Drank some Guiness and felt like a genuis.
March 8, 2011...
Mardi Gras Day! Finally! We went to Johnny B's and hit the St. Anne's Parade as usual. This time we rode bicycles to the Bywater to catch the very beginning and ran into several other neighborhood parades--lots of creative creations roaming the streets on wheels and feet in Hunter S. Thompson merriment. I made it to famous & talented photographer George Long's website--his "Mardi Gras Faves"--I was the first picture he took that day and so he says, "set the mood." We had a lovely day & settled in at home w/champagne. I watched Rex toast Comus on T.V...
March 7, 2011...
Proteus & Orpheus Parades: the last night of festivities before the Big Day. The Old-Line Parade followed by Harry Connick, Jr.'s more modern parade--stunning! Wished I'd seen him, but I saw him on The Colbert Report earlier--he was not going to be in town!
March 6, 2011...
My Friend Robin took me to her former boss & Bon Vivant lawyer's house where he and his wife give a blow-out Thoth party every year. This was a great honor to hang in a beautemous Garden District mansion with fine food & adult bevs. I drank champagne all afternoon while viewing the Thoth, Okeanos & Mid-City parades. Lavish!!! Thank you, Kelleys!!!
March 5, 2011...
My friend from work, Mary Ann hipped us to where she was riding in the Iris Parade and we scored some envied throws! Immediately, the sky opened up and we were in a downpour--it was hilarious & we kept right on catching beads! Yeah!!
That night, Queen Constance took me to the M.O.M.s Ball where the Radiators made their final appearance at this sacred event.
Sacred because of the enormity of the crowd that dresses to the utmost in crazy costumed fashion (and some undressing), and obsessively celebrates.
Held at the giant warehouse of Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World, the band and costumes did not disappoint.
We got home early (the next morning).
March 4, 2011...
Babylon, Chaos & the Muses parades last night. We are marching forth up to the Climax of Carnival Season!!!
Tonight Hermes, Krewe d'Etat, Morpheus with some friends from my early parading days (c.'83): Rae, Michael, & new friends, Christine & Queen Constance!
March 2, 2011...
The Druids parade!!! Hail Ancient Order of Druids!
March 1, 2011...
Hot Tuna came to town at the House of Blues. Charlie Musselwhite was on the bill...what a bunch of pros! Visit Jorma's furpeaceranch.com & go learn some pickin'.
February 28, 2011...
Weekend parades uptown with my guy: Pontchartrain, Sparta, Pygmalion, Carrollton, & King Arthur. Great fun!
February 25, 2011...
The Krewe of Cork paraded from their usual spot in the Quarter. This parade has gotten to be very popular and was quite crowded. The wine this year must have been of a special vintage because the Krewe was especially corked and there were giant gaps between paraders.
This Friday night was also the beginning of night parades for the Mardi Gras Season & we took in Oshun.
February 20, 2011...
Phunny Phorty Phellas' Royalty Proclamation at Frankie & Johnnie's. We got invited because we know Queen Constance!
Got to hang out with the whole gang including founders, Peggy Scott & Erroll Laborde, famous photography George Long, eat great crawfish, down some brews & feed the Buzzards!
The Jefferson City Buzzards arrived in the midst of the Boss & Queen's speeches. The Buzzards have a"practise walk" 2 Sundays before Mardi Gras--they were in drag! Niiice.A meeting of the Royal Courts ensued and more Purple Haze beer-drinking!
Excellent entertainment! Thank you, Queen Constance & your Minions, of which we are just two...
February 19, 2011...
Normal Krewe de Vieux parade madness. Unable to write about this--you must see for yourself!!!
February 18, 2011...
Bill de Turke's Birthday Party @Chickie Wa-Wa's. In attendance were Amy, his lovely wife; Lydia (a long-time pal of mine) & her hub; Seanie (tending bar!); Pfister Sisters & Paul Sanchez (performing) w/Matt Perrine; and an old pal of mine from Houston, Reese, aka Dr. Grief who informed me he was taking his wife & kiddle to Austin-Town for good-time family vibes. R. & I used to cavort at the Satellite Lounge, Houston, when he worked for Miss Molly back in the day. I would also see him after he "came East" & was guitar-teching for Cowboy Mouth.
See ya in Texas, Dahl !!!!
February 12, 2011...
The Campbell Brothers, Neil & Glen, treated M. & I to the "My Dahlin' New Orleans HBO's Treme Benefit" for the Musicians' Clinic and we rubbed elbows with the likes of Melissa Leo, Wendell Pierce, Dr. John, Tom McDermott, Matt Perrine, Alex McMurray, and the "real" D.J. Davis. Thanks, Bros.!
January 6, 2011...
The Pfunny Pforty Pfellas inaugurated the Carnival Seasonwith their usual streetcar ride. Our friend Constance was crowned Queen!!!
December 5, 2010...
Loyola University College of Music and Fine Arts put on their yearly "Christmas at Loyola"--at once serene and uplifting. The processional with combined choirs, brass ensemble and organ sounded more like an Angelic forcewith the help ofthat awesome cathedral soundat the Holy Name of Jesus Church.
The Loyola Jazz Band and the Loyola Chamber Orchestra really showed off on a jazz carol and a classical piece, respectively.
Enjoyed it immensely (enough to miss the end of the Saints game)!
November 19, 2010...
The Beaujolais Nouveau debuted last night. My 5th year being invited by my boss' partner--what a blast!
This year was the best because they not only had the Beaujolais tastings, but they added better wines, a good-priced champagne and heady cocktails. As always, Jean-Luq with Maurice's was on top!
October 17, 2010...
The 5th Annual Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival was held at Lafayette Square. This year Barbara Lynn was playing and I had missed her at the Stomp. They had an outdoor sports bar set up so we could help cheerthe Saints to Victory which we did with Abita Beer!
Barbara Lynn wrote songs and performed beginning in the 1960s. She's still "Got a Good Thing Going" (a song of hers the Rolling Stones recorded) and put on a fantastic show--playing left-handed guitar and singing.
Afterwards, she was interviewed at a new "Oral History Stage" in Gallier Hall, across the street. Her daughter and grandson had brought her over from Beaumont, Texas, and she sounded so sweet and seemed unaffected by her stardom.
I first heard "Lose A Good Thing" from the movie, "Hairspray."The songstuck with me & I began performing it, not realizing 'til years later that it was recorded here in New Orleans by a left-handed guitarist from Texas that I would shake hands with years later. What a thrill.
October 15, 2010...
The Historic New Orleans Collection concluded their "Concerts in the Courtyard" series with Jason Marsalis trio. The music was beyond and the beverages were provided by a local brewing company that I had so many I cannot recall, but the beerwas quite tasty. I will readjust when I remember... Saw my friend Warren Woods who works there.
October 6, 2010...
Dr. John & The Lower 911 played at Lafayette Square for Second Harvest series--for free!!! Outside! When Dr. John got up to play guitar, none other than Allen Toussaint sat in on piano! Wow! Such a night...got to chat w/guitarist John Fohl before the show--what a blast! And Abita beer for sale.
October 2, 2010...
Art for Art's Sake. M. & I stayed uptown this time and did a Magazine Street sweep. We visited with our buds at Potsalot, Cindy & Alex (and their 2 sons); stopped by Mignon's; Mystic Blue Signs and saw Eve & Vince; Simone & Maria at their shop; and ended up at Allain Bush's antique palace. House of Lounge is no longer owned by Edith & Patty, so the vibe was different there. These soirees are great for seeing folks and what they are up to,so take one some time! It'sA Lips Recommendation.
September 30, 2010...
The Historic New Orleans Collection hosted an opening for their Mignon Faget exhibit "A Life in Art and Design" with artist in attendance. The show was impressive and our hostess was lovely& gracious--a true artist and celebrity. Loved seeing the enfoldment of her career in the many facets of Faget!
September 25, 2010...
This is the end-all of items, Dear Diary! Last night the Ponderosa Stomp held a panel with Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes! She was kooky & cute. Told tales & sang--totally wackily awesome! I got to shake herhand and tell her how much I loved her! Earl Perry, why didn't I ask you to take my picture with her??!!
September 23, 2010...
I think Guiness Book of World Records is in town because yesterday, Haydel's Bakery built the World's Largest King Cake (twice around the Superdome); and today Chef John Folse cooked up a mess of mac'n'cheese in a 1797 cast iron skillet: 2,100 pounds of creamy goodness. These events were better than stopping at a roadside Alligator Farm to see a two-headed chicken because they benefitted charity!
September 18, 2010...
Friends of City Park held a fundraiser "Martini Madness" last evening at City Park's pavillion in the Botanical Gardens. Upon sampling the menu, I was calling it "Martooti Gladness": after a Pink Lemonade Vodka, a Gimlet, a Raspberry Cosmo, a Moscow Mule (with ginger beer), and lastly, a Tropical Breeze (coconut, orange, cranberry--very breezy). Good thing I rode the street car. Whew!
September 16, 2010... Newcomb Art Gallery hosted an opening of Newcomb pottery and hand-woven baskets last night.
If you have never seen a Newcomb piece in person, this is worth it--there aren't alot there, but they are beyond charming--and were decorated by women who were offered by The Newcomb Pottery Program at the turn of last Century (1898-1910-ish) "a socially acceptable way to earn a little money." Uniquely lovely!
Ran into John Fohl (Dr. John's guitarist) who just returned from on-the-road, whose wife, Shelly Boyles runs the place--THANKS for a great evening!
September 15, 2010 ... Will the Fun never end? Hee hee, attended "A Conversation with Lionel Ferbos" last night at the Williams Research Center in the Quarter, sponsored by The Historic New Orleans Center. Outrageously good with Jason Berry, moderating, The Royal Sonesta providing food and bevs (hacha!) and Mr. Ferbos' daughter in attendance, helping out with information from the past.
I had attended his 99th birthday in July at the Palm Court Jazz Cafe where Mr. Ferbos still plays: still a great player, too, btw!
His interview was priceless. He's so cute! He's been playing jazz music for 82 years and still practices every day! Back before the day, he delivered groceries on his bike and saw Danny Barker at the Orpheum. He said, "If they can do it, I can do it." It was great to hear about the "olden days" from someone with such good energy. He also gave music lessons for $.25/each back "in the day."
Thank you, Mr. Ferbos, for being such a Treasure!
September 14, 2010 ... Saw Alejandro Escovedo at the Parish last night--really good show-great songwriter lives in Texas now. Used to follow his band The True Believers when I lived in Houston--the guy can still rock! Most Excellent band, too.
September 13, 2010... I didn't think it could get much fatter, but then last Friday night The Recording Academy & The Ponderosa Stomp hosted a panel/exhibit on the Unsung Heroes of the New Orleans Studio Scene--with Dave Bartholomew, Harold Batiste, Wardell Querzuege, and Cosimo Matasa. Allen Toussaint, who dubbed the Experience "right as rain" crashed the party & they all came up with some amazing anecdotes that filled in history's gaps & exposed secrets, like that wasn't meant to be fuzz tone, it was just a bad amp!
Everyone paid homage to everyone else & it had to be seen to be believed. These Cats are amazing and I would recommend putting them in your prayers every night so they can live another hundred years and keep the Magic Alive.
Oh! & P.S., Peter Caddoo brought his special blend of NOLA brew (ahhhh!) and the event was catered by Green Goddess on Exchange Alley. Beauty Night all around.
Go see the Exhibit at the Cabildo: you'll find out that Little Richard recorded his big hit "Tutti Frutti" right here in New Orleans!
September 12, 2010 ...
New Orleans Seafood Festival held court at Lafayette Square all weekend. M. & I biked down to see Kermit Ruffins & The BBQ Swingers play late Saturday afternoon. Kermit encouraged us to "Party New Orleans Style" whichto memeant slamming beers--whew! And then I was invited up on stage: of course, he invited all the women, but I'm not going to take it personally. We got to swing our stuff to "The Palm Court Strut"--what a blast!!! He's the Best!
September 10, 2010 ... The New Orleans Saints football team hosted the NFL Season Opener at the Superdome last night:The NFL called it The NFL Experience -- with Dave Matthews Band, Taylor Swift and a parade (of sorts). Who cares?! We won! We played good, too! What a Slam Dunk Evening! Lots of accustomed revelry and good vibes! Woo-hoo!
Sept. 5, 2010 ...M. took me to see Deacon John & the Ivories last night at Snug Harbor!
"The Deac" is total Aces: singer, entertainer, guitarist, band leader: his band! Ouch! They are ridiculously fantabulous--Sax, trombone, trumpet, drummer, keys & histwo female singers! Wow! One is his niece and the other has been with him for over 20 years. We could have been on Broadway...it was that powerful & great. Oh! His brother, Charles on bass (wow!) and his sister on congas--nice touch. We enjoyed it immensely.
Thanks, Deac & Co.!
September 3, 2010... Survived the Kat-5 Anniversary weekend.
It started to rain last Friday, and we all started to get a little unnerved...
Friday Night:
Decided I need to catharsize and Darelle was in town--"Come see Al 'Carnival Time' Johnson at the Monteleone Carousel Bar grand piano!"
The Saints were on T.V.in the back of the room and every time "Our Blessed Boys" "did something," Al broke into his new song to the tune of "It's Carnival Time"---"Who Dat Nation" and we danced around waving barnaps.
Al was great playing all those songs; Jay & Sandra from Parkway had gotten engaged; and we were in the presence of the King of MOMS; as well as photographer and musician-supporter, Pat Jolly.
What a time!
Saturday:
I hadn't seen any of the HBO Series, the Treme and the New Orleans Museum of Art was showing all 10 episodes all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
I thought I would see the first two, but after the first one, I went to the ticket-giver and said, "I want to see it all!" And I did, except for the last episode, so don't tell me!!!
Sunday morning we skipped Church and saw Episodes 8 & 9, but left without seeing the Season Finale, to attend the Katrina Jazz Funeral.
Outside of the Monteleone Hotel, just steps from the Carousel Bar and Lounge, we all put into a coffin to bury anything from the Storm we wanted to let go of. I saw a woman put in a Ready-Meal...
We all sang Amazing Grace and then second-lined it to the St. Louis Cathedral-Basilica and attended "A Celebration of Hope Then and Now" with multi-denominational prayer and singing service. They even had a Zoroastrian!
The pipe organ and the choir in there is sensational and of course, tears were shed among the thank yous for continued blessings, protection and strength.
I still had my $50 gift certificate from being one of the Windsor Court 140 Characters, so M. & I went to have a couple of cocktails and appetizers.
The crabcake was delicious at the Polo Lounge, and my pomegranate cocktail was the most, but M.'s double shot of Petron cost $36.00! He scrambled to get out of there when we saw the bill: "I think they're charging by the minute!"
It was still raining when we drove home, but it turns out "catharsize" comes from the Greek word, "Kathairein" to cleanse. Excellent!
Thank you, Katrina...
August 27, 2010... Went to lunch at Antoine's, a venerable institution since 1840, located in several buildings in the French Quarter.
Thought I might celebrate the survival of some of New Orleans that we all know and love.
Fortunately, the French Quarter was unharmed during Hurricane Katrina as were other parts of the City.
Including my neighborhood, The Garden District.
Following the Storm, which we stayed through, we had hot running water and a working gas stove/oven.
We had drinking water, wine and cards, which we were playing listening tothe battery-poweredAM Radio. Michael did not mind drinking warm beer and since we thought the worst was over, we were just hoping the a/c would come back on soonand we could watch CNN, and also, not have to suffocate sans a/c.
Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come and that unfolded over the next couple of days.
Monday morning it was still blowing, but not like during the night: the Hurricane itself made it seem that we were hurtling through space in our second story apartment.
A giant water oak tree (eight-stories tall) fell on the neighbor's back yard--the wind was blowing such that it should have flattened us watching it in the kitchen: but it almost seemed to know to fall exactly where no-one or no property was harmed.
We were totally terrified and slept fitfully during the night. The words of my Minister, Ruth Ann Elmer, echoed in my thoughts: "God does not want people or property to be destroyed." I also remembered Jesus rebuking the waves and repeatedly stated: "Be Still."
We went out on Monday as if we had ended up on another planet. It was a new day and, miraculously, we had lived to see it.
I gardened a bit. We looked around the neighborhood; with all the big trees, there was a lot of debris on the streets. It smelled fresh like a huge forest and looked that way with all the trees toppled on to the street. I was surprised by the number of people that had stayed, and were now walking around the neighborhood.
Everyone was in a bit of a daze, seeing these huge trees fallen (and mostly in the middle of the street) We had our mouths agape, looking at the giants down on the ground of Louisiana Avenue.
Fortunately, the debris had been burrowed through Monday night for we were to follow this path the next day. But I am ahead of myself.
On the radio, Jefferson Parish President, Aaron Broussard repeatedly apologized the pump stations were manual and since everyone was evacuated, the water was not getting attended to properly.
M. rode his bike down to the Quarter and obtained Bloody Marys (with ice!) at Johnny White's on Bourbon Street.
That poker-hot stifling night, we heard noise on the street which was unnerving. Youth roaming the streets with nothing to do?
We kept praying for air conditioning mostly...the mosquitoes were fierce.
The next day, Tuesday, M. explored down in the Quarter again, early. This time he heard reports of water filling up on Poydras and was alarmed to see it coming up as he came back to "The American Sector."
About 12 noon, we heard on the radio that mandatory evacuation was called (again), the electrical substations were going to be out for a couple of months, martial law was declared, and there was only one way out of the City.
We gave our cat a cigar packed with catnip and packed M.'s van in 32 minutes.
If we had been living on Louisiana Avenue where we moved from two months earlier, we would not have been able to leave the driveway for the tree debris.
After we turned on Tchoupitoulas Street from Jackson Avenue, I was surprised to see the Wal-Mart was "open," but M. informed me that it was not, actually.
I was too frightened to look at the looters much, but what I saw them taking were things like dog food and items that they would need knowing that no stores would be open in the near future.
A telephone pole was down on the street; we saw a cop car with two policemen in; I didn't blame them for not doing anything about the looting. There were enough problems.
When we went over the Crescent City Connection and I saw a man walking with a small child on his shoulders, I burst into tears: it was like a third-world country; I had never seen anyone walking on that Bridge before. Later, on T.V. we learned that the Gretna police kept out a large crowd of people on that Bridge at gunpoint because Gretna was "locked down..."
Desperate times, desperate actions...
Even though there weren't that many people on the road, they were all driving like they were on the Italian autostrada--I was scared and crying. I was not able to look at I-10 as we came up from Boutte--I-10 towards New Orleans was underwater--it was frightening.
My brother and his family took us in in Houston and Susan Kennedy gave us her beautiful apartment for 2-1/2 months.
Even though we were treated like royalty and nothing "that bad" happened to us, we were still basket cases.
To see one's town go down like that in the United States 21st Century is something I don't wish on my worst enemy.
My friend, Diane, kept saying, "look at the silver lining," and the Dalai Lama said, "Let those that died in the Storm go."
I was very grateful to Sean, Mitch and Carolyn, Kelly, Johnny C., Guruatma, Sat Katar & neighbors, Sat Prem, the Weasels, Jeff & Ruth; everyone that gave us shelter, clothing, shoes, jewelry, money, kindness, love!
Pete Little got Lips & The Trips gigs at the Mardi Grad Grill (appropriately enough), and Bob at Dan Electro's hired us.
Gary Clark, Johnny Hessel and I played like we had never parted. We did a gig at the "Fish-Off" on the White Oak Bayou by Jimmy's in the Heights and Pete's birthday party.
Beans Barton declared our "Evacu-Vacation" a success when he welcomed us to his show that night.
The most important thing I learned was that people are a lot kinder and more generous than myself.
May I be inspired and illuminated by their selflessness and continue to carry on in an upward spriral fashion the goodness bestowed upon us.
Thank you, World and Beyond!!!
July 23, 2010... M.'s Big Day and The Tales of the Cocktail Celebration provided complimentary frozen bevs at the Monteone swimming pool. Martin, Dayna, Logan, Bill & Amy among others attended where we also got free beach towels! Wow!
July 10, 2010... Attended the Bastille Day celebrationat the Mid-City block party outside of Cafe Degas. Saw my awesome guitarist, Mark Fowler there with his lovely wife, Pat, as well as other notable attendees. "Some Like It Hot" played (they are) and my former Houston guitarists, Raphael Bass and Pierre Pichon played their Gypsy Swing Jazz (they are, too).
Earlier, we rode bicycles to the St. Henry 21st Reunion (for actual alumni as well as anyone who can spell H-e-n-r-i (oops). We got caught in the rain but loved being on a neighborhood parking lot listening to J. Monque'd Blues Band (with Charles Moore on bass!)
What a fun city, huh?
Maybe we can stir up the Archidiocese to re-open all of the churches: (we really miss Our Lady of Good Counsel by our abode!)
July 3, 2010... On a personal note, my guy & I attended the birthday party of one of the all-time greats, Mr. Pete Fountain, at the equally lengendary Mid City Lanes Rock-N-Bowl. Pete can really play & his band is perfect. M. got his L.P. from the 60's signed (graciously) by The Man Himself & made it to a clip on Ch.4 news...
May we all be so nice at age 80!!!
June 11, 2010...We played a combo Beeday party/Bye-Bye to some "Movie Folk" here in New Orleans for the making of "The GreenLantern."
My neighbors, Margaret and Vera, have been living in New Orleans working on a movie project along with a jovial group of folks to whom we entertained in the lovely home of Amanda & Billy, in the Garden District.
Happy Birthday Amanda and Carie!
Loved being with y'all!!!
