Bayou Boogaloo Annual Bike Pub Crawl
Hosted once again by Peter Hickman to raise money for volleyball courts, the "historic-sites tour and let's see how much alcohol we can consume before 10:30 a.m." started out this year at the (#1, 9:00-9:45a.m.) Morning Call's newest location at City Park. A lovely spot next to the Peristyle:
Scenic City Park
Michael!
Delivering The Goods!
While enjoying an order of beignets and cafe au lait with M. & Johnny Bee, I discovered that an acquaintance of mine, Lucky, works there! (see pix to the right)
Peter said that we were about 185-strong and our first ride was to Holt Cemetery (#2, 9:50-10:05a.m.), on the other side of Delgado College, where we paid our respects and especially to musical icons Buddy Bolden and Jessie Hill.
A peaceful spot, not without its problems, a "potters' field"--the market for Buddy Bolden states: "legendary cornet player, New Orleans Jazz Pioneer & First King of Jazz." Jelly Roll Morton's quote: "The blowingest man since Gabriel." The exact spot where lay his remains is unknown, but this is a nice marker:
Holt Cemetery, established by Joseph Holt (a City Board of Health Official) in 1889 (in use before its official status) is unusual in New Orleans--as it contains below-ground graves (with the exception of one tomb.)
Next stop (#3, 10:10-10:55a.m.) at Mic's (named after Mic Jagger) Irish Pub on Bienville, but I resisted drinking before 10:30 a.m., not wisely, but only because they had no Guiness on tap!! Sacrilege! No worries, as Johnny Bee informed us that Tom McDermott lives at the end of the block, so we tooled down there for a morning serenade from the master, also got me picture took with him (what a nice guy!)(see pic to the right)
Mr. Okra cruised through the crowd of bikes on Bienville to make a stop around the corner where I snagged some good shots including this one. (see pic in Special Events section) Mr. Okra was a performer at the Jazz Fest (although I missed him)--all part of the folk traditions we are so fond of and attempt to foster...
Next stop, down the road, everyone went nuts for GinaWare Costumes and Clothing, (#4a, 11:00-11:45 a.m.) 4429 Bienville Street, housed in the front of a giant studio, catering to the gigantic (so gargantuan that I had to house the photos in Special Events section). Just about everyone bought something and I bought a new wide-brimmed straw hat and M. bought a summer shirt, both at reasonable prices. Check it out next time you are making your rounds--nice gal who recognized me from The Band (Lips & The Trips)!!! Thanks alot!!!
Next door, The Germania Masonic Lodge No. 46 (#4b), a place I heard about on one of those fabulous WYES-Channel 12 documentaries about Back in The Day...(see pix to the right & in Special Events)
The Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar, (Stop #5,12:00-12:45 p.m.) 1931 Orleans Avenue, owned and operated by Jessie Hill's daughter, Judy, with none other than Guitar Slim Jr. getting us on the dance floor, beginning with none other than Mr. Hill's classic, Ooh Poo Pah Doo! (see pix to the right)
Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, (Stop#6, 12:50-1:35pm), 732 N. Broad Street where we, as usual, enjoyed the brass band sounds, again this year, the Pinstripe Brass Band! Beauty tour, and I wandered across the street to the spiritual shop to peruse the largest selection of religious candles in the U.S. Smells good in there. Didn't go to the Bayou Boogaloo, opted for a shrimp po-boy and an Abita Restoration Ale at Parkway instead.

Mother's Day Concert, Cabrini Park--The New Leviathan Foxtrot Orchestra
It's a tradition! Lovely weather to boot. Adult beverages, lawn chairs, blankets, cheese & crackers and a game of cribbage to boot! Thank you, VCPORA!

Sidney Smith's Birthday Bashes
He sent out save-the-date cards with a big explanation as to why he was havig a big throwdown (and not gettin' hitched AGAIN)...the Creole Queen was Site#1, and we all boarded to sail at noon! Never blasted off as there was engine trouble. No trouble down below where the band was cranking out tunes and Anthony gave Sidney a great poem-toast/roast:
Toaster Anthony & Christina
(see pix to the right)
Site#2 was his pad and more music with more musical guests! Swimming pool, movie stars as only Sidney can do.
Thanks, man, and Happiest! xox

The Iguanas at The Square
Still celebrating Cinco de Mayo with some free beer and nice weather at Lafayette Square, but I still think the crowds have outgrown that space! Didn't keep me from getting up close to the band. Great harmonies!

Cinco de Mayo
Too burnt from all that Jazz Festing, so did not make it out to Ralph Gipson playing with Fredy Omar at Casa Borega. Got into the good tequila thought. Ahhh, the Luxury! (thanks, Caralina & S.)!!!

Day #4, Jazz Fest Weekend #2 and The Grand Finale:
Volunteered once again with those lively folks from La Divina Gelateria so had to be there at 10am! (see pix to the right) Good thing Jeff didn't take me up on my Plan B of going to see Alejandro because I would have felt a lot worse than I did which wasn't so bad what with the weather soo soo pleasant and my 50 minute bike ride over to The Fairgrounds through the Garden District, French Quarter and now the new bike lane up Esplanade Avenue! Beauty, eh?!
Convening at the La Divina Booth next to the pond. Me & Jarrod fed the turtles leftover brownie from yesterday:
Espresso by Carmello--ahhh! Had to try out all the flavors for breakfast: coconut-lime, Azteca (choco w/cinnamon & hot pepers), strawberry (made with Louisiana strawberries! woo hoo), salted caramel....had to be able to recommend which flavorful flavor to our customers!
LaDivina's Lovely Selections--I could bathe in them! Yummm!
Started out the musical selections with Ernie Vincent & The Top Notes at the Blues Tent (see pix to the right). Sat next to a guy from England that I was in line with yesterday! Cool (also 'cause under the mister). Mr. Vincent layed down some classic blues guitar; saw Trumpet Mike up there; Ernie brought out Billy Outlaw to do a tribute to Coco Robicheaux and they sang "Ghost Riders in the Sky."
Used to see Coco perform at the Jazz Fest and got to hang with him and his wife there which was a hoot because we could not walk three feet without someone stopping him to say hello; we would try to escort him, one of us on either side, through the well-wishers and fans...
Cynthia Girtley, "New Orleans Gospel Diva," tore it up in the Gospel Tent (see pix to the right). "Let's have church." She was at the grand piano and when she got up, saw Davell Crawford was behind her, and he switched from the keyboards to her spot. Reminded me of Mahalia Jackson--Whew! Powerful!
Big Chief Alfred Doucette came in and I snagged him for a photo opp! Thanks, Big Pearl!
More Mardi Gras Indians in the Grandstands: Interview with Big Chief Juan Pardo and Wallace Pardo of the Golden Comanche tribe. Juan sang his Spy Boy chants and explained how he was taught to "play Indian," how it was like a game of chess -- he could always get behind the other tribe's Spy Boy, Flag Boy & Wildman -- and work his way back to their Big Chief! CHECKMATE!
Wallace explained how when the Mardi Gras Indians would come on Mardi Gras morning when he was a kid, his grandmother would get him out of bed--he said they were fierce and made "man up" look like "man down!" He had a dream after she passed in which she told him to come back home; so he started photographing the tribes and got invited to come to Big Chief Tootie Montana's house, eventually back in the bedroom where he got dressed.
Very interesting and entertaining talk: learned that when the Indians holler "coochie mollie" it is a derivative of the French, "Je vais, moi allez"--let's get out of this mess. I believe they taped it--it's a Lips Recommendation!
Met up with a few of the Seattle/Montana Gang at the Blues Tent--James Andrew & The Crescent City All-Stars had The Baby Dolls and the crowd swingin'! Second-lined out into the audience a couple of times and I elatedly joined in!
Good intro to Deacon John, one of my usual stops--it was his niece and singer, Kathleen's birthday--boy, she is fantastic. And of course, Deshawn, his singer who has been with him many, many years--had the usual great horn section ("so-and-so used to be with Allen Toussaint, now he's with me" or Irma Thomas, etc.), his brother, Charles on the bass (who tore it up on a solo), his sister, "Conga Red" on the congas, the keyboardist and himself, playing washboard, guitar, slide guitar and sporting a parasol at one point. They actually cut him short which was like stopping Frank Sinatra at the Academy Awards... geez.
He's a gem and his voice and playing were in top form. He got J.D. Hill to come up and jam on the harmonica on "Dust My Broom." And always love his "Many Rivers to Cross"--get goosies just thinkin' about it. (Made me want to send him a few hundred dollar bills so he would sing it at my Service...) (see pix to the right)
Worked my shift with La Divina
The Hordes Descend
while listening to John Fogerty blow through his most excellent Credence Clearwater Revival catalog--beauty, eh?--which he didn't do as much of last time I saw him play the stage on the other side of the Fairgrounds a few years back...(saw him in the French Quarter, too, tooling around with a lovelyl blonde that trip...)
Had the privilege of serving Chris from Supagroup who informed me his new band is debuting at the Circle Bar, May 31! Alright! Always loved his band!
LaDivina laid a big carton of coconut lime gelato left overs & I knew it would not last on me bikeride home so I stopped off at Lady Di's and laid some on her, transferred mine to a smaller container, and caught up with her & her buds on the Day's events:
They had been backstage at the Blues Tent with Aaron Neville! woo hoo!
Wanted to catch up with the Campbell Clan before they scattered for the North, & found them having pre-dinner at Arnaud's cocktails at Flanagan's! YAY!!!
Me & Montana Bananas at Flanagan's
A righteous ending to a righteous Jazz Fest 2014--thanks be to all !!! AMEN!!!!!

Day #3, Jazz Fest Weekend #2:
C'est incroyable! Not Bruce's performance, for he does that every gig, but the crowd that gathered to witness it. I guess if my friend Jeff will drive 10 hours to "witness the miracle that is Bruce" (SallyAnn) then I can wait 45 minutes to get in the Sauvage Street Entrance Gate. Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk! Back up a minute here! I thought it was The JAZZ AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL--oh, right, you can't support the cultural traditions of New Orleans without the big-ticketed folks like Bruce Springsteen and the "E" Street Band(!?) I don't mind--I usually don't even go for the big stages--I used to, but those were the days we'd drink a big bad bunch and I'd perch atop my guy's shoulders--we never ran for a space, put out a tarp &/or chairs and then left for the day. A lady actually stepped on me when I was laying down because I wouldn't give her any space she was trying to grab in a very unfriendly manner...OUCH! What happened to Peace, Love & Grooviness?
Well, it certainly abided with me & my ole College Chum, Jeff, who arrived at the Fairgrounds at 9:30 a.m. Me, I had to do laundry so I arrived right at 11a.m. and thought I'd just pop right in--so did 50,000 other folks--Woops! Met some nice folks in line however, and got to try out some old jokes on a fellow from Covington--fortunately, I had my garoovy parasol so I was in shaded comfort.
The sea of flags was almost overwhelming, but Jeff was by a black & white Auburn flag so I did find him--tried to hook up with the Seattle/Montana Gang to no avail! Sea of People as well as flags...
Kim & Paul St. Raymond were in their spot so I got to say hello--their friend didn't want anyone to stand on their white blanket, which was weird, but whatever!
The nice folks we were camped out next to watched our tarp & chair so we scored an Abita Amber (at the only Abita tap on the Grounds outside the Blues Tent) and popped in to see J. Monque d' Blues Band send out a tribute to Big Chief Banter who just passed away, with Tom Worrell tearing up "Big Chief" on the keys. J. had a descendant of Verdi (7-year old boy) dancing on stage with him and an Italiano guitarist, Davido, besides of course, Red Deveca on upright bass, et al. J. is a colorful character I have known since before I moved here, meeting him when he opened up for Jimmy Thackery & The Nighthawks at Tipitina's one Mardi Gras back in the early '80s. Glad to see he's still around doing his thing.
Caught up with Ellis Marsalis & Co. in the Jazz Tent which was packed--yes, like sardines! Great stuff, though, I can see why! Son Jason on drums.
At the Grandstands, in honor of this year's 45th Jazz Fest, a photograph exhibit of early ones (Mahalia Jackson performed at the first one at Congo Square!), Savoy Family interview, got a hug from Saxophonist Derek Huston while I was in line for the bathroom, and Jeff got to watch a horse race from another part of the world, all while enjoying the air-conditioned comfort of indoors...
Meanwhile, back outside, Bruce blazed through his catalog in his passionate, energetic fashion--keeping it up for over two hours (I read that he requested they add 30 minutes on to his allotted time!). Jeff knew the structure of his shows: "He usually comes out in the audience at the end" when he came out early...
Love his guitarist, Nils Lofgren--used to be a big Grin fan back in D.C.--his band before he went "Uptown." I had all his albums & when he came to Houston in the early 80s, went backstage--he seemed bummed out, so I'm glad he "made it." Resembled Abe Lincoln with his long sideburns and top hat--played banjo, lap slide guitar around his neck, and sang harmonies. Good work, Doll!
I remember when his album "Greetings from Asbury Park" came out and I liked him alot back then, knew his "hits" but never kept up with every album. Had heard about his shows and had to see for myself--glad I did, but I don't go in for this distance-thing anymore. I have been to plenty of large shows and that may be my last hurrah. These people have plenty of fans, they don't really need me. I like my performers more human, warm & fuzzy.
Jeff left at the 2nd encore song to drive back to Satellite Beach, FL (his 26 hours in New Orleans at a screeching halt), and I peeked in at Johnny Winter still playing and singing like he always has, but just not dancing around like before. Wow, lots of youngsters now big fans--glad to see it--saw him fall off the stage back in 1969 at Kansas City Memorial Hall and when I asked him about that (I knew his girlfriend in Houston & she brought him to see me play c.1990) he said he remembered that: the lights were in his eyes and he didn't see the end of the stage. I remember the crowd caught him and he kept playing--he invented stage diving!!!
He reminded me of an old blues guy--his band followed him no matter what he did--he's still One of The All-Time Greats--The Stones' "Shout Away," Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" & Bob Dylan's "Highway 61." I know that his health has affected his career, but it seemed a little bit sad to me that Bruce was on a "big stage" and he was not...
May 2, 2014
Day #2, Jazz Fest Weekend #2: Cut out of work early again and got to see the White Cloud Hunter Mardi Gras Indians, where I ran into Gary Hodge, sporting his beaded Indian necklace--Nice!
Charmaine Neville had her Dad, Charles playing sax, besides her always-great band, including Detroit Brooks, guitar, Jesse Boyd on the bass, and her son Damian came out to sing and rapped--he's great! I like her version of "St. James Infirmary" in which instead of "six crap-shootin' pallbearers" she has "12 Chippendale Dancers" to carry her along--nice!
On the way to the Fais Do-Do Stage:
Os Negoes of Bahia paraded to Casa do Brasil Tent
Alejandro Escevodo rarely comes to town and he was my must-see of the day. With "The Sensitive Boys"-never disappoints! "I just can't put you down." Playing House of Blues tomorrow night! Woo hoo!
An ole College Chum (University of Maryland, College Park, outside D.C.) Jeff, drove 10 hours from Florida and we met at Casamento's for some New Orleans seafood. See food and eat it! Nothing like their oyster loaf & a Restoration Ale for what ails ya and to restore ya! Jeff had the oyster stew and crab claws. Love that place a bunch. Been eating there since the mid-80s (thank you, Gipsons!)
Couldn't miss Tricia Boutte's last official public performance before she went back home to Norway, so we headed over to the Allways Theatre & Lounge. Never been there--theatre setting on one side and then a bar/lounge where it looked like Debbie Davis & Helen Gillet were performing. Nice set up there and felt good to turn Jeff on to Paul Longstreth, Peter Harris, and "Sista Teedy"'s fabuloso performance. Always great!
Ms. Tricia "Sista Teedy" Boutte

Day #1, Jazz Fest Weekend #2: Volunteered with WWOZ and got to ride the golf cart to my station! Terrific fun to stop traffic and whiz around the back of it all!!! Thanks, Maryse & Crystal!
Distributing paid-for Brass Passes at the Shuttle Bus Entrance
Beauty weather again, wow. Got to leave work early and caught Rosie Ledet & The Zydeco Playboys (usually enjoy her energetic performances, but she looked quite ill); Dirty Dozen Brass Band; met up with my Seattle/Montana friends:
and enjoyed the "ambience" at The Wailers show! Woohoo! Really great stuff!
Loved running into folks (see pix to the right). Shoved off early with the Montana Banana Gang as they had reserved a Donald Link private dining room, Calcasieu, The Wine Room, and now I know where they got that name. They kept pouring and I kept drinking! Beauty set-up. I forgot Donald was famous for his pork, whose flesh I do not consume, but the fish was pretty tasty and the love was really flowing!
Kelly, Kate (Neil's gal) & Glen @ The Wine Room!
Originally met Neil & Glen Campbell and a few of their rugby buddies back in '97 or so when they came for Jazz Fest and we have been hanging with them every visit. The band would play at an uptown house rental, but this year they stayed at St. Philip in the Quarter where loud partying has to be taken across the street to Flanagan's, so I did a few acoustic numbers and got them to join on some call-&-hollers there at their dinner. Good people! Thanks for it all! Love, love, love you guyses and galses a whole big Heart & Soul's (Thank you, Neil for that!) worth!!!! xox

International Jazz Day
Tonight, the Prime Example Jazz Club on Broad Street hosted "The Harold Battiste Jazz Hero Award Presentation and Concert Tribute with Jesse McBride and the Next Generation."
(see short bio to the right)
When M. worked at Dillard University back in 2005, I was fortunate enough to find out about him as one of the most influential people in not only in modern jazz music, but popular music as well. Also, OZ dj David presented him an award from the City of New Orleans.
Nice club, the food looked good, plenty of cold beer & the door man flirted with me!
April 29, 2014
Last night's Annual Gil's BeeDay Party/Crawfish Boil at The Kerry Irish Pub: Gil has his own plaque now--he used to always sit at Coleen's plaque, but now he has his own, mid-way down the bar. Nice work, Dude!
Foot & Friends played, with former Lips & The Trips guitarist, Jack Kolb along with Dave James on the electric guitar. Jack played with me Back in The Day, c.2001 on Bourbon Street. Great running into you, Maestro of the Strings!
Recognized the barkeep as Jimmy's FireEater partner from last year's Gemini Party, Dana. Shaggy's crawfish boil contains no sausage so I could partake! Mighty big, tasty and spicy! Yummm! Thank you!
HAPPY BEEDAY, GIL! Keep the hits a'comin'!!!! xox
April 28, 2014
Day #3, Jazz Fest yesterday, I volunteered with those fine folks with their fine products, La Divinia Gelateria, who have a new li'l sprout, "Ettie." Fine weather and fine entertainment with Rev. Lois DeJean (the "Gospel Queen of New Orleans")--very moving, very powerful set with her and her daughters, grandkids and a great-grandkid or two. Always try to catch her performance since I first caught sight of her about 10 years ago...
"Let the Lord have his reign
God is my protection: he is my light in darkness
He is my own! Alelluia!
Can we give the Lord a hand of Praise?
How Great Thou Art
I praise the Lord, I thank the Lord
He is good to me, He is my friend
Glory be to God
The voices of 10,000 Angels could not express how I feel about God"
Ruby Wilson, The Pinettes Brass Band, Guardians of the Flame, Dr. Michael White (snake charmer with the lickety stick) and John Boutte who blew me a kiss from the Autograph Platform:
Sensory Overload or The Best of All Worlds?
Didn't mind at all missing Clapton after experiencing Rev. Dejean, et al--after all, I saw him back in 1970 when he was already a Rock God!
April 27, 2014
Second Day of Jazz Fest yesterday and THE BOUTTE FAMILY GOSPEL! Tricia was involved and her kin are all talented individually, righteous synergy all together! Each chose their solo and Tricia did "Happy Being Me" which we are too! So sweet, so fabuloso!
Saw The St. Raymond contingent (including Whistle Head sans Whistle Head) in their usual spot by the Acura Stage listening to Zachary Richard.
Brazilian group (featured country this year), "Ginga Mundo Copverra of Bahia" playing instruments and dancing/acrobat/martial arts type moves in the Salutes Brasil tent.
Ronald Lewis of the House of Feathers and Cosmo sewing Mardi Gras Indian patches (and letting the kids have hands-on help) in the Folklife area.
Big Freedia held an on-stage twerking contest with as he put it, "whole lotta ass shake." (see pix to the right)
Allen Toussaint and Huey Smith's biographer were interviewed by Ben Samdel and they played some of his tunes. Mr. Toussaint praise him as "creative" and how sad for us that his life was cut short...always love hearing Mr. Toussaint talk about his history...he's so charming and funny--he wouldn't say the word "booty" because "when you say it, it sounds legit, but when I say it, it is all that it is."
Allen Toussaint & Huey Smith's biographer interviewed by Ben Samdel
Terence Simien closed out the Fais Do Do stage. Rousing! Love, love, love him: his energy, his antics, his great big smile, his talent and his band. THANK YOU, SIR! BLESS YOU!
April 26, 2014
Had a GREAT 1st Day of Jazz Fest yesterday what with my MOST FAVE, Tricia Boutte performing with Paul David Longstreth and Norway's Gumbo:
"Norway's Gumbo"--her band "back home"
Her performance was broadcast on WWOZ so I hope you caught it--brilliant! Showcasing her brand-new CD "O New Orleans, Here I Come," doing the title track, "Fool That I Am," "Dreamland," Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'" and Ray Charles, "Alelluia I Love Him So" sent out to her Viking Guy, "Fuzzy." (see pix to the right)
Besides her voice that ever-so-shines, she is adorable and has such a stage presence, bantering with personal stories and amusing anecdotes. LOVE her!!!
Met a couple of their Norwegian pals after The Show with her Norwegian--Mr. Tricia (aka "Fuzzy"). Got to try out my two phrases of Norwegian that my Grandmother used to say: "mange tak" and "go maht?" (sp?) which was "thank you" and "good food?" Yes, one-half Norwegian I am, due to my great-great grandparents, Sigrid & Helge Olsen Bergentangen coming over and settling in Northern Minnesota (where her trombone player remarked that there's more Norwegians in Minnesota than in Norway). I can realte to that quirky sense of humor...
THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW!!!
AND THAT'S NOT ALL, FOLKS!
A day at Jazz Fest is not complete without the Mardi Gras Indians, and the Semolian Warriors were holding forth at the Jazz and Heritage Stage (see pix below and to the right):
Trucked on over to the Congo Square Stage for first-timers at the Jazz Fest, Public Enemy (whom Sista Teedy toured with at one time!) Had seen them back in The Day c. 1989 when I was the only Caucasian; this time, I was the only Older Folk...Loved it though! (see pix to the right).
Caught Chris Thomas King in the Blues Tent before heading over to Rocky & Meg's Annual Crawfish Boil & our annual gig there in the 'Hood:
Trent, Dottie & Trips' Guitarist Mark Fowler
As always, an honor & a pleasure playing for y'all, Seydels:
Meg, Mark, Chloe, Lips & Rockster
April 25, 2014
Last night caught Kermit at the Jazz at the Park concert. Big Freedia's mom passed away so was not performing. Kermit was cutting up -so funny, so talented. His daughter performed with her band and I ran into Gail & we caught up a bit! Great talking with you again, Gal!
Going out to the Fairgrounds to catch Tricia Boutte, et al, today; play Rocky & Meg's Annual Crawfish Boil tonight; and pass a great time! Hope to see y'all out there! HAPPY JAZZFEST!!! woo hoo!
April 24, 2014
Last night attended Our Lady of Good Counsel's Feast Day at the Church. The Archidiocese has had it closed for several years and it smells like an old wooden building. Beautiful service with a singer in the balcony who also soloed "Ava Maria" which was sung at my Father's funeral (was his favorite)...saw Harold, photog & passionate parishioner, looking great! They plan to move the folks from the Rampart location there after the asbestos removal is completed. Next year the Priest was hopeful.
April 23, 2014
Passed a fantabo time being thoroughly entertained by Tricia Boutte & Norwegian Gumbo performing last night at Kermit Ruffins' Mother-In-Law Lounge!! She has been touring the World with these folks and they are stellar! Paul David Longstreth, her partner in musical crime for many years also onboard!! Her brand new CD, "oh new orleans, here i come" with the price of admission!
Lots of celebs & royalty in attendance! Like being in an episode of HBO's Treme!
Johnny Bee, Maria & Alex and I drank some brewskis and enjoyed the scenery outside, which Kermit hasn't changed at the local landmark made famous by Ernie K-Doe and his wife, Antoinette (see pix below and to the right):
Painting of Ernie & Antoinette on the side of the Mother-in-Law Lounge, by Fuselier: "A Good Friend Walks in When the Rest of the World Walks Out"
Lips, Maria & Alex
Got to meet Tricia (Sista Teedy's) Viking husband, Fuzzy, and several other Nutty Norwegians. I can say that as I am one-half Viking, myself (don't ask which half!)
Lolet & Cyrille Neville (who was in attendance with Gaynell)
Now Run, Don't Walk, to her performance tomorrow night at Cafe Istanbul, then Thursday at the Jazz & Heritage Fest! You won't be sorry! You'll feel cleansed!!! You'll be blown away! She's the best in Every Way!
Thank you, Dear Heart, you grace us with your Effervescent Presence! xoxoxo!

Easter Sunday. Had it on good word that Al "Carnival Time" Johnson was headlining the Goodchildren Parade so biked up to Musician's Village to catch the beginning. As it turns out, Al was in the Chris Owens Parade in the Quarter (which we blasted by happily, thinking we avoided a big mess of a crowd). Saw an interesting house on Bartholomew, however, so it was worth the trip (see pix to the right).
Went to the new beginning of the GCP at The Red House at St. Claude & Press:
but did not stay, instead headed out to Johnny Bee's where we passed a good time out in his courtyard in the Marigny.
Went to see the beginning of the Gay Parade on Rampart--saw our friend Diane Hintz, carriage driver, and her mule, Dixie:
Diane
but did not stay for that either. Instead, went home and communed with my plants in the backyard. HOPE YOU ALL HAD A RESURRECTING EXPERIENCE as did my chiropractor, Dr. Bill! xox
April 19, 2014
Had a big time at our gig at the Fairgrounds last night what with Johnny B., Corey, Gail, Pam, Hilton, Julie, Kendall & Karen, among others, all hootin' and hollerin', playing percussion with The Band. Thank you, Creature, for your drumming finesse, and as always, a stellar performance by my partner in Crime & Assorted Misdemeanors, Mark Fowler!
Tonight we took on a new spot, BEATnik, with wonderful acoustics and neighbor Greg Surrey (famed restauranteur) and gal-pal Julie dancing the night away with us. Joanne Davis is back in town and stopped by--it was great seeing her. Thank you, Jenee for having us at your club--hope we can do it again!
And as always, a huge THANK YOU to my guy and roadie for his hard work and devotion! Love you, Rev!
April 18, 2014
Good Friday. Had a good and a bad a.m.--had to wait for 1-1/2 hours at the Sprint Store for phone assistance which I could have done myself! Doh! But then the Good Folks at the Oil Change Store told me I did not need an oil change as I hadn't driven my car enough even though the time period on the sticker was past.
So got to take my usual trek to St. Anne Shrine on Ursulines where The Devoted climb the steps on their knees. A beautiful spot for prayer and contemplation (although construction is going on across the street at the former school) with statues and paintings of Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Saints. (See pix below and to the right)

April 17, 2014
Playing the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse tomorrow night, 7:30-9pm (our usual 3rd Friday of the month, except in Summer or Winter!) and the "new" place, BEATnik (formerly Big Top Circus, 1638 Clio--just off St. Chas.) Saturday, 6:30pm-9pm.
Easter Sunday, April 19, 1987 is the night I got up at Sean Walters' Songwriters Showcase, after Sean invited me to play the songs I'd written -- actually get up on stage at Chelsea 804 in Houston (located at 804 Chelsea, Pete Sellin's club where he eventually loved Miss Molly and hated me); which I did after calling up everyone I knew and asked them if they played an instrument: came up with Stephen B. Miller (who had played in my ex-'s band with me, Dog's CurFew), Alan Miller (no relation, whom I knew from Stevie Ray Vaughan's shows), Steve Koch, and Steve "The Pope." Two Millers and Two Steves...
Thank you, Sean, for all your support and encouragement over the years. You are still The GodFather of My Band!!!
Hope to see you out there, if not, Happy Easter one and all!!! xox

Continued the French Quarter Fest extravaganza (so crowded !!!) with a stop at the Pullman Train Car at Union Station Terminal where we toured the cars and were treated to champagne, mimosas and music by Chicago's own Lance Brown & Mike Levin. The Pullman Rail Journeys between Chicago and New Orleans in their re-createdness.
I have taken "The City of New Orleans" Amtrak line back in 1998 where I had the best piece of salmon due to the fact that Donna's husband (from Donna's on Rampart) was cooking on the train! Little did I know! Also little did I know that the Master Suite is the cabin they show on the internet...
Viewed the "Ruthie the Duck Lady" movie and it made me sad--poor, lamentable girl--so sweet and so vulnerable...Lisa Hix brought her to see me play once on Bourbon Street--she didn't stay long, but it was an honor having her there...
Went to the Abita Beer Stage to see Donald Harrison, Jr. and his band including Mr. Detroit Brooks! Loved it! Had some of his tribe join him on stage. Love that!
Ran into Jane & Kerry Brown and Johnny Sansone. Jane has a new CD out--I'll have to check it out.
Timing was just right to go see the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra! Can't get enough of "Indian Red." Love, love it--Sunpie was sporting his tall top hat he uses in the Skull & Bones Gang...the Washitaw Tribe was masking and dancing and so we were--hung with dancing gal Diane Edwards! Lovely weather.
Could hear Raw Oyster Cult as I was riding off. Made one stop to check out the rousing harmonies and south of the border rhythms of The Iguanas--long-lasting for a reason!!!! Great weather, great entertainment!
April 11, 2014
Last evening was pretty spectacular what with Tricia Boutte doing "her stuff" by the River at the French Quarter Fest--absolutely wonderfully superb she is--her voice, her energy, herself--she is The Utmost! She snagged saxophonist Aaron Fletcher from Jeremy Davenport's band who was a grand balance to the songs: "Trouble Man," "My Dreamland," all songs from her new CD, "Oh, New Orleans, I'm Comin' Home." When she sang about "the hummingbirds fly" an Eagle dove into the water behind her--she was unlocking molecules again...love, love, love her.
And speaking of love, famed authoress Frances Mayes (remember the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun") was at the Garden District Book Shop and I sped over there to drool on my other Idol, Frances Mayes, on a book tour promoting her new memoir, "Under Magnolia." She read from it (love her accent), answered questions and then signed autographs and sat for pix. Amy from Garden District Books was nice enough to take my pic with her, and then her husband, Ed (who's taller in person than in the books) took a pic of those that "stayed to chat." (see pix to the right)
I fulfilled my fantasy of recommending restaurants to her (Casamento's for charm and any John Besh for The Glory! with John Besh's "Cooking from the Heart" in eyes-reach).
Started reading her new book (which is great--who would have thought? One of those "because-ofs" or "in-spite-ofs") and the first part was how she went on the William Faulkner Trail in Oxford so I stopped in at Faulkner Books--no, not stalking, just a hopeful bump-into!!! (Saw on her Facebook she went on Sunday...so near & yet...)
The French Quarter Fest was in full swing and at Le Petit Theatre, TimecodeNOLA was showing movies spotlighting New Orleans characters--we stopped in for "The World According to Ernie K-Doe" and stayed for the two shorts: "New Orleans Lexicon" and "Yeah You Rite!" reflecting on New Orleans' unique (and not so unique) speech patterns.
The world was our oyster, but we went for fried eggplant and bruschetta at Sylvain where they have NOLA Brew and make craft coctails with fresh, fresh ingredients. M. had the virgin Moscow Mule--the refreshingest! Oh, they make their own Cola! Very pleasant stay back in the courtyard in a long skinny site near where both the 1788 and 1794 fires broke out Back In The Day. They've been open three years and we're just now checking them out!
Just now checking out Russell Batiste & Friends with the Wild Tchoupitoulas featuring Jason Neville as well, performed at the River stage by the Aquarium. Always love the Mardi Gras Indians -- talented band and wish I'd caught the name of the female singer--enjoyed her performance!
Caught another female favorite, Charmaine Neville, with Jesse Boyd on stand-up bass, Amasie on keys & accordion! and Detroit Brooks on guitar! Star-studded! She never disappoints. Always says hello to her pals in the audience--even I got a shout-out! Thanks!!!
Especially loved her new (to me) rendition of "Put a Spell on You."
April 10, 2014
Some sort of wild transfiguration occurring today as I must leave early hearing my favorite songstress, Tricia Boutte, performing at the French Quarter Fest, in order to make the appearance by my favorite authoress, Frances Mayes, appearing at the Garden District Book Shop! WOW! Psychedelic!
Lots of opportunity for my Clone to spring into action with all the events happening at the French Quarter Fest this weekend! Check the schedule, but be forewarned: it gets more crowded every year! IT IS FREE! And Dr. John is playing it instead of the Jazz Fest this year....
April 9, 2014
They postponed "Bike To Work Day" from yesterday to today due to the threat of inclement weather--what a buncha duds, I bike to work every day anyway!!! (Hee hee hee) But I must say it was great being served free coffee, carrot muffins and strawberries outside! Thanks NOLA Bike Easy!
And I got to see Andy Wolf, bassist with Royal Fingerbowl, dropping off his Li'l Sprout to school by Coliseum Square Park--sorry I didn't recognize you--BUT when you pulled off your hat to show your bald haid, I thought I was supposed to recognize you for that.......GREAT TO SEE YOU, MY OLE FRIEND! So close, yet so far from our Checkpoint Chuck's/Dragon's Den Daze...........xox
April 5, 2014
Got a gander at the World of Artist Bunny Matthews at the Arthur Rogers Gallery on Julia Street: "New Orleans Characters from A-Z" circled a room with him in the middle, saying hello. Great exhibit, it's a Lips Recommendation!
Ran into Kathy Sebastian who regaled us with tales of the past, present and future, kind of like the "A" for Astrologer character in Bunny's World. I was tickled that he took an Abita Grapefruit IPA beer from me, "I live in Abita Springs and have never had their grapefruit beer." Hope he liked it as much as I do!!!
Also saw Laura Gipson, the woman who turned me on to this whole Wonderfully Wacky World of New Orleans, with all of the characters, on-screen and off--. Can't thank you and Ralph enough for it all!
April 4, 2014
Volunteered at the Preservation Resource Center's "Julia Jump" gala (37th Annual) at City Park's Arbor Room (overlooking Popp's Fountain). Saw George Schmidt and finally put it together that his Patty was the same Patty that Executive Directs the PRC! Duh! Boy, do I feel silly...Amanda Shaw played and I ran into Cleaver (former bassist for the Bingemen) Schmidt who was also volunteering with his Dad. Really nice affair, even if it did rain and drove everyone inside....it is Spring, after all.
April 2, 2014
Attended Marcia Ball's performance at Lafayette Square Park, Wednesday's on the Square sponsored by YLC and a bunch of other people, one of which is our IT folks who offered free beer & food! Nice! I got up front to boot and her bass player said hello to me--remembers me from the ole HoustonTown days when I used to see them play at the Satellite Lounge on Washington Avenue... She was great as ever, never disappoints...she had a birthday on March 20th--HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY! Alright!
March 30, 2014
SUPER SUNDAY was that and more. Took tons of photos which do speak volumes:
Big Chief Monk Boudreaux with Skull & Bones Gang member
The Mardi Gras Indians (Uptown Tribes) paraded as usual from A.L. Davis Park down LaSalle, this year led by over a dozen motorcycle cops. We watched The Processional where LaSalle turns into Simon Bolivar; much more crowded than past years, and much more colorful:
Although the colorfulness I encountered was not what I expected--next to us was a Chief, Coco Loco (not parading this year), whose uncle was selling pit bull puppies out of the back of his pick-up truck...
which bummed me out, but then I had just watched an episode of "Too Cute" on Animal Planet the night before... Jesus' admonition came to mind, "...using my Father's House as a Den of Thieves & Robbers..." but then again, I was drinking heavily (four Abita Grapefruit beers) so I wasn't all that pristine.
The Parade ended where it began at the Park and I saw a bunch of major and minor celebrities milling about in the crowd including Quint Davis, Glen David Andrews, Ivan Neville, Jon Cleary, Geraldine Wyckoff, and Rev. Goat Carson, doing his usual feather blessing of the Gathering, which seemed to be working as the weather was spectacular as were all the Feathers Flowing.
March 27, 2014
The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce sponsored a networking event at the Board of Trade on Magazine Street. Been wanting to see the inside of that building for a while now. The giant domed structure was built in 1880, behind the (once) St. James Hotel, now a plaza and arcade.
The place is booked out for events (mostly weddings) and the website (see excerpt to the right) shows some nice pix of the dome the three clocks on the wall, and the height from the second story.
Pigeon Catering did a great job showing off their stuff--liked that fried oyster burrito and that beer from Atlanta wasn't half bad.
From the Board of Trade website:
"The New Orleans Board of Trade, Ltd has a history of service dating back to 1880 when it was founded as a non-profit membership organization comprised of key leaders in the business community. Over the course of its history it would be deemed the foremost authority on the River, on commodity commerce, with a specialty in coffee importation."
Wished I'd had a camera--the giantness of it all was impressive: those huge wooden doors held five hinges on them and the windows were ones I would not want to have to wash.
March 23, 2014
They postponed Super Sunday AGAIN due to the rain in the forecast, but even though the temperatures are unseasonably chilly, there is no postponing Spring!
pink azaleas & Japanese Magnolias on Coliseum St.
And no need to wait for Easter for resurrection, the hibiscus tree that I rescued from the front yard dig, has sprouted leaves and a promising future!
March 21, 2014
Started up our 3rd Fridays of the Month at the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse, 7:30-9:00p.m. with Creature on the drums. Good to get out and play again--thank you Bridget & The Folks for the visit!!!!
March 20, 2014
Got my wish to return to St. Mary's Church to the "Concert Series for Lent," this one featuring New Orleans trumpeter, composer, bar proprietor, and ambassador Irvin Mayfield, accompanied on piano by his teen-hood friend, virtuoso Ronald Markham (they met at NOCCA at age 15). Was wowed by the piano part in Irvin's song tributing James Booker.
As he was playing, he resembled the angel trumpet players in the two-story altar--didn't realize he attended the Holy Ghost Catholic Church on Louisiana Avenue and learned a lot of these songs there.
This concert series benefits the new music facility, The Bishop Perry Center, and Mr. Mayfield requested that we reach into our souls and pockets to give generously. I did enjoy this concert at this setting, but couldn't help thinking about having a beer and listening to Jeremy Davenport a few blocks away...
March 19, 2014
St. Joseph's Day
Went to the St. Joseph's Altar at St. Mary's Church in the French Quarter, connected to the Ursulines Convent. Lovely, lovely, and they served lunch in the Convent courtyard. Great weather, great food & abundant altar fixtures (see pix below and to the right):
The Altar
An outbuilding in the Convent Courtyard
Lunch featured green salad, bean salad, pasta milanese with "mudica" (browned & seasoned bread crumbs sprinkled on top representing Joseph, the Carpenter's sawdust!), regular pasta, fried/breaded catfish, stuffed shells, pasta salad, steamed brocolli, french bread, artichoke & eggplant casserole, rice casserole & those scrumptious homemade cookies! Yowza! Malta Grazie!
That night, caught up with the Mardi Gras Indians parading Uptown. I missed the Bo Dollis Tribute at the Bultman Home, but heard it was moving. Bo didn't make it out of the hospital, but he's doin' alright and in everyone's prayers. (See pix below, to the right & in Special Events Section)

March 14, 2014
The aforementioned Bill De Turke was kind enough to have me on his WWOZ Radio program in order to promote our upcoming show at the Fairgrinds Coffeehouse, Friday, March 21st, 7:30-9pm (and every subsequent 3rd Friday of the month until it gets to warm since it is outdoors)... Had the opportunity to say, "Lick us on FuzzBook" and "lips, like the body part." Thanks, Bill and all the great folks that make The Land of Oz possible!!!
Since I am an Historic New Orleans Collection member, I get to get in free to their "Concerts in the Courtyard" series, this premier one featured The Hot Club of New Orleans. Nice stuff and NOLA Brewing's three tix for three NOLA Blondes on tap. Got to say hello to guitarist John Rodli who also plays with a million other bands....Ahh, the Luxury!
On the way out of Dodge, ran into the Mollie's St. Patrick's Day Parade and scored a coveted Krewe du Jieux bagel, this one with green appeal (see pic to the right).
March 12, 2014
Attended St. Alphonsus' concluding "Fun Under the Frescoes" program featuring Beth Patterson & the McTaggart Dancers, Jameson whiskey and an Imperial Pilsner that was dazzling.
Tom Conklin, Breimeister Extraordinaire donated his homemade "Imperial Pilsner" beer and I found out he had a hand in inventing Abita Brewery's Purple Haze! Pretty cool! My favorite beer since 1996 when it was invented (or discovered!) up until a few weeks ago when I quaffed an Abita Grapefruit IPA.
Great way to support the upkeep of this beautiful Church and enjoy an outing, membership is only $25.00 and admission is free to the Season of programs.
Lots of colorful characters including:
Bill & Aimee De Turke, Event Coordinators
Also made the acquaintance of Bonnie Broel, from The House of Broel on St. Charles Avenue. She was wearing quite a bit of frog jewelry, which I Iike and she said her family had owned the American Frog Canning Company which I didn't... anyway, I will have to put her shop on my list of To-Dos, which I will probably like...
March 9, 2014
Enjoyed the last weekend of the excellent exhibit at Newcomb Art Gallery: "Women, Art, & Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise." Snapped some great shots of these fantastic pieces.(see to the right, below and in "Special Events" Section)
Also sponsored by the Smithsonian, jewelry, a lamp:
and a doorbell:
besides the usual gorgeous pottery, were on display.
Outside, Spring was on display:
Went to visit my minister, now residing at Lambeth House, and discovered these Proteus Ball invitations on display (see pix to the right and below):
Krewe of Proteus 1889 ball invitation
March 8, 2014
Redemption! John Sinclair played at Three Muses! Outstanding! Nothing to say except go see him or buy his stuff--My Hero on all accounts.
Carlo Ditta on guitar & Smokey Greenwell on sax & harp:
Hadn't seen Smokey since he left his gear at my gig on Bourbon Street c.'98. Really looked good & we caught up a bit when he bellied up to the bar.
Great night on Frenchman Street.
March 5, 2014--Ash Wed.
Stopped suddenly on my bike at Lafayette Square for drive-by-ashes administered by the Episcopalean Priest from Christ Church Cathedral. No joke!
Hope it helps because that was one odd Carnival. It was late this year and very, very cold!
There's still Super Sunday to vew the Mardi Gras Indians and St. Joseph's Day. All is not lost! Sure missed the Skull & Bones Gang and was going to visit Kermit's Speakeasy last day in business...
Mardi Gras--March 4, 2014
Marched fourth we did, and into 37-degree weather! Started sprinkling as we started out, but I had listened to WWOZ' weather report (20% chance of rain) which was optimistic as I was, so I carried no rain gear. But the tunes they were playing really jacked up my mood! Thanks Tuesday a.m. d.j!
Soaked by the time we reached Jackson Square, our usual first stop, we were astounded at the lack of personnel revelling... spotted the Skeleton Krewe hovering in a doorway on Chartres Street, they were late, too. Maybe thinking it would "let up" maybe... ducked (as in great for weather for--) under some awnings outside of La Divina Gelateria and were severely reprimanded by the girl about to open for business. I think she'd had enough of people--well, the weather was certainly going to help her in that regard... noticed Tony Seville's pirate bar two doors down was shut tight & we were aghast! The World's turned topsy-turvy! But there was the opening bartendress & we mentioned that we were used to seeing it open and were glad that it wasn't closed for the day. She grouched at us, too. It's funny--I know owners of both establishments and I don't think either couple woud be too happy to hear about their employees' "customer relations."
Huddling under awnings obviously wasn't the solution, so we went inside Stanley (yes & they have another restaurant, Stella) and snagged spots at the bar where the employees were in much better spirits. HooRay!
Pressed on to view the Societe de St. Anne Parade--folks were huddling under umbrellas and we were cold, wet & knew God wasn't trying to cancel Mardi Gras--obtained my Verti Mart oyster sandwich and headed to Maria & Rob's new place on Gov. Nicholls. If the weather had only cooperated, we would have been out on the balcony, instead we were pedaling hard home... was a different sort of Mardi Gras.
Got dressed again and went to Le Bon Temps Rouler where we were hoping it was--and I discovered my new favorite beer--Abita IPA Grapefruit--outstanding stuff so the day wasn't a total loss (see pix to the right).
March 3, 2014--Lundi Gras
Left work early to attend Erica's Juice Party in the Treme:
The Red Beans & Rice Parade ends at the Backstreet Cultural Museum & Al "Carnival Time" Johnson is their Grand Marshall.
March 2, 2014
Met up with Robin & her brother Al for the Thoth Party at Robin's former boss' posh Garden District manse:
Daylilies smelled heavenly!
Have considerably calmed down since my first visit to their Thoth Party a few years back--that year (as every year) Mr. K. was serving up (my first taste of) bourbon milk punch that packed more than one punch. I stuck to the bubbly this time and maintained decorum! Wow!
Visited with neighbors Jann & George in the King Cake room whence I sampled some Sucre cake which was mighty tasty and got to itch my "envie" of La Boulangerie's gallete de roi. Yum de Yum.
A former boss rides in Thoth so I made my connection. Pleasant day for greeting Springtime flowers (see pix below, to the right and in Mardi Gras Section):
Azaleas on Chestnut Street
Watched the Bacchus Parade from a second floor balcony downtown where I thought I'd be more comfortable, but the crowd control (the barricades) blew me away. I finally found out that they opened the barricades at Poydras Street for crossing St. Charles Avenue whenever there was a break in the parade... thank goodness or I would have had another stuck on the wrong side of the tracks like at Endymion...
March 1, 2014
Bridget's krewe came over for the afternoon parades, including her sister Aimee from Baton Rouge (how I know Bridg--Aimee and I worked together c.2001). Great seeing her & meeting their folks and her kiddles (see pix to the right). Nice weather for Iris and Tucks parades. Mary Ann, a former work colleague, threw me some cool Iris items.
Ran into famous artist Simon (we were neighbors on Magazine Street) who was handing out throws:
Adrian & Simon
and our former Coliseum Street neighbors whose daughter is almost "all growed up."
Veronique, Zoie & Michael
Then biked over to Mid-City to join Dottie & Trent at their Endymion Party. Forgot they were inside the Line of Demarcation (Orleans & Carrollton Avenues) so had to wait 'til the Parade was over--and this "super-super-krewe" boasts the largest float in M.G.--The Pontchartrain Beach with 250 riders on a nine-tandem unit! (Proteus has 230 in their parade).
Enjoyed seeing everyone and having a couple with them out on the back porch. When I would come visit the Gipsons for Mardi Gras, they would take me to the Taylor's annual party, so of course I had to brave the crowds and uphold tradition! (see pix to the right)
February 28, 2014
Hermes, Krewe d'Etat & Morpheus rolled and I hung out with my neighbor, Kendall, and her entourage. Had a nice uncrowded spot where we could park our chairs and chat when there was a lull in the action. Samantha & Augie's two-year old son was up on a ladder so he was bestowed upon. The former Bultman funeral home, now Fresh Market, was a good spot for scoring a six- and using the facilities.
February 27, 2014
Bridget & I paraded with Babylon, Chaos & Muses. Had a big time until my Muses' shoe-connection was ripped away in mid-flight. Greedy Fellow-Reveller, but I guess you needed it more than me! Thanks anyways, Claudia!
February 26, 2014
Druids & Nyx parades were marred only by a flat tractor tire and the frigid weather. Phunny Phorty Phellas had their first ride on their streetcar float, No. 1 in Druids and I ran into ole pal, the famous actor, Donald Lewis, Jr., revelling with some neighbors of mine. Great seeing you, Doll!
I scored:
Teddy Bear from the Druids & 2 Nyx purses
And the back of the coveted Nyx purse:
Thank you, Greg, Gregor & Pat!!!! Had a blast!
February 25, 2014
As the Carnival Countdown continues and the excitement builds, we attended Xavier University's presentation "The New Orleans Black Mardi Gras Extravaganza" (see pix to the right and below). Hosted by Dr. Michael White and highlighting unique local Carnival customs, presentations were by representatives of several long-time Carnival groups:
Big Chief Darryl Montana, Big Chief, Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indian Tribe
Clarence Becknell, Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club historian
Dr. Kim Vaz, Professor of Womens’ Studies & author of The Baby Dolls
Cinnamon Black, Treme Million Dollar Baby Dolls
Royce Osborn, Skull & Bones Gang, Producer of documentary “All on a Mardi Gras Day”
Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, author & performer of “It’s Carnival Time”
TBC (To Be Continued) Brass Band
Each discussed their personal experiences & the history/meaning of their tradition, then Al sang his famous anthem and TBC Brass Band marched out for a second line. Michael White broke out his clarinet & Cinnamon and Royce danced around the audience. What a blast! Al told us we were his favorite Carnival-Timers! Wow! Even grabbed a quick hug from Arthur Hardy, who wasn't staying--said he had to "go back to TV-Land."
Al "Carnival Time" Johnson & M.
Please see "Mardi Gras" Section for more info & pix.
February 24, 2014
A Happy Birthday to Pal Robin!!! But may your Springtime Last Forever:
My across-the-street neighbor's tulip tree aka Japanese Magnolia springing forth
February 23, 2014
Intermittent showers for parades. Really came down a couple of times, but I wasn't giving up! Went home & changed twice! The Carrollton & King Arthur parades were drenching, but the rain stopped for Alla, praise Allah. Saw Margie Perez on a float who threw me some glass beads! Thanks, Doll!
And thank you, Maria & Rob for keeping me such good company! You are true troopers! I have got to say, however, all of the trash is really getting to me...
February 22, 2014
Had a nice parade day: Bridget came over for the duration, joined by Jocelyn & her clan for the night parades. Pontchartrain, Chocktaw & Freret from 1:00-4:00pm, then Sparta & Pygmalion, 6-9pm. Hadn't hung with any kiddles in a while--it was nice. Jocelyn's two boys, age eight & 13, her daughter, age six & her five-year old friend. Super cuties!!!
Saw neighbors Claudia & Jim Lynch (see pic to the right). They were getting ready to go to the 'Tite Rex Parade, which is a parade made of miniatures of the Rex parade. Claudia had fashioned a float for the parade: people made out of Chee-Weez (like Cheetos for the uninitiated). I remember reading that the Rex company sued them because they thought people would get mixed up, so the 'Tite Rex folks now have to do the "e" in Rex sideways to tell the two entities apart...
One of my favorites of the day was the El Mono El Lucho (el loco!) Krewe of masked & caped wrestlers. They staged a match in the hand-held (by lovely women) rope ring (see pix to the right and below):
February 21, 2014
First parades hit the streets tonight & I did, too--got out and visited with neighbors which is one of the best aspects of Carnavale. Oh, and the alcohol! There will be alcohol, although I did manage to take it easy as there will be company!
Oshun & Cleopatra paraded & the weather was nice, a little cool, but lovely. Saw ex-next door neighbor, Patrick & pals, as well as Kendall's nephew, Nate with friend Scott (see pix to the right).
Yesterday afternoon met up with Alice & Company in the French Quarter, in town from Houston to celebrate brother James' beeday. Joined with the Krewe of Cork merriment on Royal Street (see pix to the right and below):
Alice holding the Sonny&Cher donnay goblet
Alice used to come from Houston to celebrate Mardi Gras and I got my first glimpse of the Indians with her one early Mardi Gras morning down on Tchoupitoulas Street back in the mid-eighties. Spectacular stuff!
February 20, 2014
Attended LifeCity's Verdi Gras Ball held at NOLA Brewing on Tchoupitoulas Street. (You may recall that my friend Peter started this place up after the demise of Dixie Brewery on Tulane Avenue. Great beer!) They served us up Swamp Grape Escape, made with local muscadine grapes. Nice stuff.
LifeCity:
"Mardi Gras is all about the local community - why can't we have local throws? We want to maintain all the joie de vivre in Mardi Gras while protecting our natural resources and promoting local businesses during this celebration.
Mardi Gras can parade the way for a true sustainable future -- one that has all the culture, heritage, and ruckus joy that is the Gras -- while preserving what we know are our precious resources and developing more local jobs to support this celebration."
Recycled Costumes abounded (see pix) and we got to vote for the best local throws! I voted for ZombBeads & the food throws (like Aunt Sally’s Pralines and P&J’s Coffee). I always contended that we should eliminate the middle man and just have the Krewes THROW MONEY!
Entrance fee donations went towards the greening of Mardi Gras, hence the name Verdi Gras. By the way, saw fellow-parishiner, Holly, educating the likes of us on all the poisonous aspects of the plastic beads we get from China (which are manufactured via child sweat shops). Documentary came out in 2008 about this and hopefully, we can have Mardi Gras once again be about creativity, beauty, comraderie and pageantry without all the waste, consumption and garbage.
February 19, 2014
Loved the "Postcards from Paris" concert at St. Louis Cathedral starring the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra with special guests. A fabuloso and rousing tribute to the ties New Orleans has with France sponsored by The Historic New Orleans Collection, the place was packed with folks standing all along the sides.
From the Sidney Bechet piece that Dr. Michael White & his trio performed (the main reason I attended) to the beautiful Chopin piece by a 23-year old Japanese student who played from memory(!) through the heart-stopping opera singing of Julia Recht, the concert was full-throttle!
Got to say hi to my buds from THNOC and shake Dr. White's hand. Was foggy and cool as I came out on to Jackson Square--perfect for a movie set.
Ran into Chester Simmons (a former teacher of my ex-'s, Miano) while waiting in line to enter the Cathedal who was chosen as King of Chewabacchus--he was quite proud of his honor & I snapped his photo (see to the right). Chester's a hoot! He got to sit in the front row!
February 16, 2014
Got invited to the Phunny Phorty Phellas' crawfish boil turned bbq from Queen Pat Jolly, held at the Jefferson City Buzzards' Den on Annunciation. All Hail the JollyLama!!
Her white owl costume was magnificent--her mother's initials were O.W.L. and the krewe emblem is an owl--no coincidence that I saw an owl the other day at the streetcar turned bus stop: Owls as an omen of death, but also as a visit from a wise Spirit for counsel...
Two years ago we attended the PPP's crawfish boil held at Frankie & Johnny's for Queen Constance's proclamation. Snapped a pic of the past & present Queens (see to the right).
The Buzzards were taking their Mardi Gras Day practise walk in which they dress in drag and I scored some nice beads from "Jaguar" George (see pic to the right).
February 15, 2014
Braved the crowds for the ever-popular Krewe du Vieux Parade this evening. Caught it down by Schiro's on Royal Street in the Marigny. Super crowded. Saw Johnny B & his entourage, but needed a spot to get up front since we know so many folks parading. My camera crapped out, but I got some shots of Caitlin and a brass band (see to the right).
Krewdelusion followed, which we liked more as it is what Krewe du Vieux used to be: more rag tag & fun... Nice weather for bike riding.
February 14, 2014
I hope we all have a little more love in our hearts for each other on this Valentine's Day. I sure got some love from my HONEY!!!
Last evening caught up with an ole pal, Leigh McGowen, in town for his pal, Natalie's book signing at Garden District Book Shop on Prytania (see pic to the right). Leigh helped her research Queen Sugar and was acknowledged in the beginning. Sat through an interesting talk about how she came to write it and how the characters started coming alive... this after having oysters and bubbly with Bridget & Jocelyn at Luke... best ones I have had in a while!
Leigh & I met atop at pyramid in Guatemala back in '96 and have kept in touch ever since.
February 13, 2014
Unfortunately, the jury believed the Feds, and our former Mayor Nagin was found guilty of 20 of the 21 counts... I feel so bad for him and his family--and all he did was render assistance to his constituents. May God bless him and help the Judge see the light next June...
February 11, 2014
What a farce. These 21 counts against our former Mayor C. Ray Nagin. What a bunch of trumped-up garbage: I find it hard to believe that adults can act like they believe their own lies...
Desperate actions for desperate times: those rallying against him may get lighter sentences; there's fame and awards for winning a prosecution (Johnny J's wife, Josephine, got a plaque for helping put Edwin Edwards behind bars); there's revenge against someone who has wronged you...
The desperate actions for desperate times Mayor Nagin may have taken were to help our Fair City at a time of crisis. He spoke up against the Federal Government and look where it got him.
God Bless you and your family, Mr. Nagin--you are as always, Aces in my book. May the Jury see the light and show mercy so that another injustice will be righted.
February 10, 2014
Let me be one of the few folks to speak up for our former Mayor C. Ray Nagin. I saw him marching to the firing squad this morning as I rode my bike into work and called out some encouraging words. I felt so bad for him and his wife--this nothing more than a modern-day lynching.
When he spoke up for us against those Blaggards in the White House, when everytime I saw him he asked, "Are you doing okay?" "Do you need anything?" When he was there for us when no-one else was, and now, no-one is there for him...
A modern-day lynching. Nothing more.

Volunteered last night for the Vieux Carre's Property Owners and Residents Association "In Home" Tour at 910 St. Philip Street. An 1824 creole cottage, possibly moved from another location with a working fireplace and other original features, this cozy little pad is rated "blue" with the Vieux Carre Commission: "regarded as being of major architectural and historical importance." Commissioned by a free woman of color and her son, the structure is of bousillage: clay mixed with Spanish moss between wooden posts. Hoped I would, and ran into John Miller, a friend who lives next door at 912. Before I met him and I lived at 912 Philip Street, I used to get his mail...

Dreamed James Bond came to hide out at my apartment and I was out of toilet paper. Went for more t.p., but my car was like a go-cart and I was having trouble negotiating…
Went to an office party in which plenty of smoke, champagne & raw oysters were abounding. Got kind of loaded and hoped I wasn’t going to make a fool of myself...but I guess I already did, telling you my dream.
February 2, 2014
Too bad about the Smoke-A-Bowl! Was an unpleasant Saints Game deja-vu--sympathized with home-town hero Peyton Manning and my brother's team, the Mighty Denver Broncos! Still think the Seahawks are just a bunch of thugs...guess I think all football players should be like the charming and loveable Drew Brees--saw him on Letterman the other night--Paul played "Summer Breeze" and sang "Drew Brees"--it was sweet.

Toured the Rex Den on Claiborne Avenue!!! More mysteries revealed! Opened once a year to the public-at-large, as a Friends of the Cabildo member, I paid $20.00 for a sneak peek at the 2014 floats, King Cake (from the King of Carnival!) & Community coffee, a short lecture by Rex historian, a gander at all the historic stuff, and a chance to purchase numerous Rex items in the gift shop!
Ran into Claudia's sister, Dee-Dee; both of them were models for the Rex poster their cousin, Tim Trapolin, drew! Pretty cool.
Noted historian Robert Cangelosi was there as well as some Rex members available to answer any questions...

Trucked down to City Hall to pay property taxes for one of my boss' clients. On Poydras Street's neutral ground (the median to the rest of the country) they have installed a series of sculptures. Across from my building is one by James Surls! James Surls, my ex'- art teacher in Houston--we were invited to and travelled out to the country to him and his wife, Charmaine's home!
His giant metal sculputure, Flower Petals in a Vase, resembles an old-timey fan from the 40s.
City Hall was like a scene from the movie Brasil, but I blasted out of there not wasting the entire day. I did, however, come without all of the necessary papers and had to return later. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait in another long line.

"South Paralyzed By Snow"--well, it's true that I made a snow ball yesterday afternoon from some icey rain that congregated on a tarp I had placed over some plants and then terrorized M. in the hallway of our apartment, but I am not sure that accurately describes our scene...
Of course, that's a different story to those on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain--on the news this a.m. they showed The Causeway (the bridge between "Northshore" and "Southshore"--that is, New Orleans proper) completely iced over and completely closed.
Caught the bus into the CBD ("Central Business District") this a.m. as the streetcars are not running; the roads were dry and passable (unlike yesterday--they warned people off of the streets and rightly so--& it was a ghost town!); Courts and schools are closed for the second day in a row and the worst thing of all--my Mayo Family Winery shipment from California is stalled in St. Rose, Louisiana!
Spent another night in the freezing temp zone, so can finally sympathize with our Northern neighbors instead of being so smug and maybe our flea and cockroach population will be minimized...
Brought in some plants and covered others, feel bad for those with crops out in the field. And what about that cute little pair of Black-Capped Chicadees I spied in my backyard loquat tree and my balcony bird feeder last weekend who had made it down here for a tropical vacation? I read that their southernmost habitat is about three States north of here, as in Nebraska! They were probaby sorely disappointed--as well as our other visiting tourists...
Well, last week the scaffolding started to go up on St. Charles Avenue for the Mardi Gras Parade bleachers; a 70-degree weekend--both Saturday and Sunday!--is predicted; "New Orleans Own" Trombone Shorty performed on the Grammy Awards Show Sunday night, and Drew Brees, our Rock-God Quarterback is making a David Letterman appearance this evening, so things are looking up! Hang in there, Y'All!!!
January 19, 2014
Went to the Offbeat Music Awards last night and rubbed elbows with the likes of Allen Toussaint and Donald Harrison, Jr., got hugs from Al "Carnival Time" Johnson and Evan Christopher, and caught up with Dottie & Trent, Amie & Bill (who was emceeing):
Trent, Aimee, Julie & Dottie
and potential winner, Alex McMurray who was hanging with Washboard Chaz' wife, Jessica. Washboard Chaz was up for "Better Other Instrument"--washboard! but was at a gig.
Nominee Alex McMurray & Jessica
Held at Generations Hall for the last dozen or so years, we were lamenting over the fact that it used to be free with free booze and was only for musicians, held on a weeknight, so less potential for a working musician to miss it...
Rockin' Doopsie Jr. stopped to be in a pic with me--(we have the same vocal teacher, Debbie Beinhorn in Texas!)
As I was leaving, spied Photog L.J. Goldstein who introduced me to none other than Cheeky Blakk!!! Twerk This!!! She's really a sweet girl, unlike her tough-gal image--hope the pic he took of us turns out good: I like her.
Great seeing people I don't normally run into -- saw some former Checkpoint-ers and Kerry Irish Pub-ers--got sweetly complimented by Grace Wilson!!! Thanks a bunch!!! And met her pal Ben who runs the Armstrong Park concerts that I enjoy and enjoyed talking to them both. Wish I'd snapped a photo of them, they were dolled up!
Speaking of dolled up, got someone to see me and my date through a camera lens!!!!
My Date & I
Snapped some photos myself and had some fun (see to the right). Last year M. & I's photo booth pic made it to Offbeat Mag, along with Dottie & Trent's--maybe again this year.
January 12, 2014
We didn't beat the Seattle Seahawks, but how about that onside kick, huh? And when Drew Breez got over that wind and the rain, how about it when he was connecting with his great receivers? We had a stupendous Season (even if I did not watch every game due to my superstition) and I am still a Saints Believer!
January 11, 2014
Became a "Friends of the Cabildo" and got to see the ribbon-cutting on the new Krewe of Hermes Exhibit & listen to the Panel discussion at the Presbyterre, for free!!! Long-admired the Hermes Parade for its beauty and old-world style, since Henri Schindler took over 10 years ago as their Float Designer.
Henri sat on the Panel with the Curator, Wayne Phillips and two Hermes Krewe members. In the audience was the Queen who donated her 1955 Ball Gown to the exhibit, and I sat next to the gentleman who restored the 1955 home movie of the Ball.
Accidentally tried to get the theme of the 2014 (their 75th anniversary) parade out of Mr. Schnidler...
Ran into Arthur Hardy again, who had loaned some items to the exhibit. Twice in one week!
Lovely, lovely, plus we got to wander around the floor to see the entire Mardi Gras Exhibit which I hadn' visited since 2000 (???!!!) Got inspired by the costumes & jewelry. Loved the old favors, invitations, drawings, paintings. Very nice stuff--it's a Lips Recommendation!
January 10, 2014
Happy Birthday, L.R. Fox (the man who first dubbed me "Lips").
And Happy Birthday, Joanne Fox (my first College roomate).
Thank you both for your kindnesses and love--may you never get snared!!!
January 9 2014
Attended New Orleans Chamber of Commerce's Women's Business Alliance with friend Robin last night at Patrick's Vin Bar (Vin as in wine). Patrick has fixed up this cozy spot that shares a courtyard with Hotel Mazarin on Bienville in the French Quarter, between Bourbon and Royal, across from Royal Sonesta's (and Chef John Folse's) Restaurant Revolution. Had a decent house Pinot Grigio & R. partook of the bubbly. There are wine lockers for the discriminating...

Blasted off into Carnival 2014 last night ("12th Night") in style! Caught the ribbon-cutting and the Three Wise Men toast at the Willow Streetcar Barn for the Phunny Phorty Phellas--1st time I'd seen the "garage doors" pulled down due to the icy temperatures. Also, a lot less lingering due to the chilly air!
But we got to inaugurate Mardi Gras properly (alas, Carrollton Station does not carry Purple Haze on tap any more, though I did sip on a NOLA Blonde) with greetings from Arthur Hardy, the Sighting of The Cowbellians, Peggy Scott & Erroll Laborde, our friend Constance and one of the Three Wise Men pushing the Streetcar on its ride!
Had a bit of trouble getting a good shot of the toasting/ribbon-cutting and costumes due to the many cameras and heads-in-the-way and the leaving early because it was so frigid, but I managed to get one clear post-toast shot (see pix to the right and below):

Since it was still early, we headed on down to Buffa's for Al "Carnival Time" Johnson sitting in with Davis Rogan. "The Real D.J. Davis" had his band with him and Drummer Charlie Kohlmeyer was there (Trips drummer on a few occasions!) and Davis took our pic. Then CK took a pic of me & Davis.
Ran into Gail G. from Church who had been at the Phunny Phorty Phellas Phestivities:
M. & Gail
Couldn't let the night end without a pic with our Hero, Mr. Al, who sat on the piano for (of course) his signature song, "It's Carnival Time," and some other grand old R&B tunes that only he can do (see all pix to the right and below):
Al "Carnival Time" Johnson & Lips
Like Trips' Guitarist Mark Fowler put it (and it was his wedding anniversary--18 years!) it was "like being in an episode of the Treme!"
January 6, 2014
Happy King's Day, Everyone, otherwise known as Epiphany and my Mother's Birthday. Oh! And Jean d'Arc's birthday as well--602 years young, I think. Today a quirky group celebrates that with a parade in the French Quarter.
We always attend the Phunny Phorty Phellas gathering at the Willow Street Barn and tonight is no exception, even though the temp hasn't left the 30s all day. Ouch. Good thing there is plenty of nice, cold Purple Haze on tap at Carrollton Station to set things right. Oh, and of course, Buffa's kicks off Carnival Season with Davis Rogan (the REAL D.J. Davis) and the REAL King of Carnival, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson tonight at 8:00.
Oh! Also it is Big Chief Tootie Montana Day also! Big Doings!
Hope to see you out there and by the way, HAPPY NEW YEAR. It was on a New Moon so we are promised lots of new beginnings. Look, I started a new Page...

From their website:
"The New Orleans Board Of Trade was founded in 1880, and trading continued on the floor until mid-1960. Centered on the eastern wall of the building are three clocks, which have been in place since the building was erected, giving the times in New Orleans, New York & Rio de Janeiro, which were the major players in the Green Coffee Trading.
The eight-sectioned mural dome was hand-painted by local artist Alvin Sharpe in 1932. It took him approximately three months to complete and the cost for this project was $5,500.00. First, the canvas was glued to the dome, and then he painted them while laying down on a scaffold.
In 1993, the Board of Trade was once again renovated, the floors leveled and carpeted with a permanent dance floor installed. It is now available for special event rental, so the public has the opportunity to experience the grandeur of days gone by.
The Arcade--A remnant of the St. James Hotel built in 1859 and noted for its cast iron façade, the arcade now serves as the formal covered promenade to the main building and loggia to the forecourt known as The Plaza. Ornamented by iron gates, the arcade measures 22- feet wide by 59-feet and can accommodate up to seventy guests. Its Seating capacity for alfresco dining would be about forty persons. Canvas drop cloths are available to enclose the open arched side during inclement weather. The arcade is also used effectively as a serving stage to the plaza when in use.
The Plaza--Constructed in 1968 on the former site of the original St. James Hotel, the Plaza offers a glimpse of the Board Of Trade building from Magazine Street. Designed by Koch & Wilson along the lines of small Parisian parks, the open court is paved in pink flagstone with four raised planters arranged around a delightful fountain. One long planter spans the length of its east wall opposite the arcade with iron benches furnishing both areas. The Plaza can accommodate sixty persons seated or 250 at a standing cocktail reception. Crape myrtles and sweet olive tree enhance the area along the east wall and adds a delightful seasonal perfume."
